Par for the course, quiet efficiency is his bread and butter. An easy 10yr NHL pro career

There should be no interest in shuffling him anywhere until they know better what they have with their young defensemen. And it's not like they haven't seen some of these guys on their offhand side (Johnson his freshman year for example).

Why move him unless he's an add-on in a bigger trade. Nothing wrong with adding another smooth skating, smart defensively responsible defenseman

You mean like Guhle ? If you believe in his upside, speed, and development sure, but if not and you need a piece to make a bigger move I might consider it especially if your able to grab a good d prospect in the next draft.

Guhle is a smooth skating D but he lacks the IQ and defensive acumen of Johnson which is why he's an NHL tweener.

Why is he going to walk? Yes, they sign him.

So far tonight, one assist, on for both Gopher goals for. Luke Hughes on for both against. So... heh.
Why did Cal Peterson walk, he had hardly any competition in net in front of him.

Some college draftees walk. It is always about them, not the team. Case in point, Alex Kerfoot drafted by NJ, decides to walk, signs with Colorado less than a month after Will Butcher decides to walk on Colorado to sign with NJ. Some guys want to walk. It isn’t about the team. Also, given that Johnson is a 1st rd pick, it’s notable that only 2 1st round picks have ever gone UFA (Kevin Hayes and Blake Wheeler). So it would be odd. But also, maybe he does. If so, it’s something he likely would have done regardless of who drafted him.

Maybe Petersen walked because some Sabre fans couldn’t spell his name right?

As for Johnson, still not interested in trading him or any of the other defensemen until they have a better idea what they have.

Why would this play a role? There have likely been fewer first rounders that walk because they're signed earlier, but I don't know that there's some increased sense of loyalty just because of the selection spot

I really hate this early worrywart mentality with college UFA's. I understand when it springs up after something from a prospect's camp leaks or if they're close to entering their last year of rights eligibility. However, in Johnson's case, I wouldn't recommend talking in circles about that until the 2022 summer, but that's me. :dunno:

Why? If Johnson remains unsigned after the NHL playoffs conclude, that indicates he's thinking of returning for a senior season and, after that point, can look for his best situation via UFA. Maybe you look to move his rights at the 2022 draft then if his camp has given that indication or maybe those fears are for not and he signs late in the summer before training camp. Either way, there's still a few months before there's any news in which path this'll take.

That’s all it is. They are more likely to sign earlier. Johnson will probably sign after this season.

That's exactly what it is-- players only very rarely forego pro years when they have the option. Johnson will have that option.

Because after this season you burn a year of ELC by giving him an NHL game thereby getting him to a payday quicker
No, I’m asking why Johnson would have that option now. It doesn’t make sense to hand wring over Ryan Johnson not having signed given that there is a whole year before he becomes UFA.

Ryan Johnson should be signed at the conclusion of Minnesota’s season. He’s pro ready and would fill an important role.
