Question: A team has 3 LHD spots on it's roster. On our 22/23 roster we will have 2 of the last #1OA picks who are LHD. If you were him why on Earth would you sign with us instead of go back to school for a year and be able to sign anywhere your heart desires? Seriously unless he views himself as a bottom pairing guy for life what future would he have in this organization?

Because sometimes left shots play on the right side? In particular, Johnson has played on the right with Minny as a freshman and at times before then.

The Sabres have the 4th worst record in the nhl. No one’s spot is secure. Johnson has better chance to break into a role with the Sabres even if the slots were all taken, injuries will happen that will allow for an opportunity.

The roster is weak enough that Johnson could force his way in, but given what they're currently working with I think he's on the outside. He'll have to leap frog Samuelsson, who frankly has been more impressive in the AHL than Johnson has been in the NCAA. Samuelsson is big enough that's he's flat out a bully in the A; that doesn't translate to the NHL, but it might as he gets older.

All this to say if I'm Johnson and someone puts a contract under my nose it'd be wise to sign. I wouldn't be surprised to see him eventually involved in a hockey trade.

Johnson most likely will get a year in the AHL just like Samuelsson. So as long as there are no issues signing him it's a problem for later. Then he'll get his chances.

It's totally possible that he ends up being better than Samuelsson.

Yep. They are going to want to give him some time with Mike Weber.

Saying nothing about the organizational depth chart issues which I think are overblown...

He could be incentivized to sign by offering to burn a year of the ELC this year, leaving just 2 left, and him in line for a new contract in 2024 and 2 years closer to UFA by the time he could otherwise graduate and go ELC UFA. Financially that's a no-brainer.

That's what every kid has to be telling themselves. If I play well, I'll have an opportunity to live my dream. Trades happen, injuries happen. You just have to give yourself the best opportunity and then kill it to the best of your abilities.

That + when you’re a player in Johnson’s caliber (B level prospect at best) who has literally never made a dime playing pro sports, to turn up your nose at a first NHL contract and a chance for short term financial stability is kind of wild. I know those ELC contracts aren’t crazy by pro sports standards, but it’s still a lot of money for someone just starting their adult life. Imagine turning down an ELC to play out your last year of college and try to hit UFA and then sustaining a bad injury your senior year that prevents you from ever monetizing your skill set? Oof.

This is what Sabres have to offer basically. Make it a max rookie contract or close to it, if necessary. He has a ton of leverage and it's just increasing.

Hagg and Butcher and Miller should all be off the roster so he can play NHL games

Are we expecting Ryan Johnson in Rochester next year?

Yeah, for part of the year at least. Also, don't be surprised if Minny is one of the last teams out of the NCAA's. Motzko has the Gophers playing well as a team as they go into the Big10 tournament and the NCAA playoffs.

Would be worth considering getting a veteran lhd in the ahl with nhl experience to partner with johnson and mentor him or would it be pointless/no one in that criteria?

I've been seeing SO MANY grown adults calling college kids "dumb" lately for wanting to stay in college. Sad way to think.
I mean…he’s a junior and has a guaranteed decent payday (at least for working stiffs). It would probably be smart for him to take the payday and finish up his last year of academics during summer classes.
