Of course I would be, I want him here long term.

But the Seguin deal is an example of why it's a bad deal for the player - they sign a long term contract to stay with the team and take the discount, then they get traded, outperform their contract, but are stuck being underpaid for years.

Well I can come back at that with what if he doesn’t outperform his contract? Then he makes out. Why can’t that case be made? He can’t have his cake and eat it too here, so if he wants that bridge, then sign one that ties the largest bridge deal given. Outperform that and make them pay you long term after.

There is nothing wrong with proving yourself, as many other players have done to get their pay day or you take a longer term contract at a lower value. He wants the world right now, and I am sorry but he doesn’t deserve it, hasn’t shown consistency in his game to deserve it, and is now going to miss the opening of camp, and possible some of the year over a couple 100k.

It's only a bad deal for the player if he ends up as an elite player. Most aren't convinced that is anything close to a guarantee when it comes to this player. It's a great deal for the player if the player fails to meet lofty expectations like so many young players with potential have before (see your avatar for a prime example).

There is risk on both sides of such a deal - just like there is supposed to be. This isn't charity where someone gets paid what they are demanding just so they don't have hurt feelings. This is a business and should be run like one.

This is exactly why John Davidson coming to Columbus was the best thing that ever happened to that franchise (1/2)

Greg Wyshynski ‏@wyshynski 7m
Johansen might be franchise player. Other teams would cave. JD said you're not hot s**t your agent says you are. You're not bigger than team

John Davidson goes on Wysh's podcast all the time. JD is buddy-buddy with the media, so they cover him favorably. Wysh is one of the most biased guys out there, they've slobbered over JD for years.

Zherdve, you don't know a gosh darn thing about Joey. Have you ever met him? JD and JK have. They have worked with him. And they see a prima donna. It is that simple. They see a kid who they do not believe is committed to doing the hard work necessary to grow as a standout player in this league. It should be clear by now, JD and JK are clear about how they view him. So please, SHUT UP unless you actually have something to contribute to the debate. They do not trust his one good year which occurred during his contract year. That is it, pure and simple. For the love of all of our sanity, you would try , at least try, to make a comment that is relevant to the debate rather than your off the wall comments defending a kid you know absolutely nothing about from a character standpoint.

And before you say it, it is true, I don't know Joey either. But JD and JK do and they are respected professionals and I trust their judgment when it comes to measuring what is in a player's gut.

Over and out.

If that's truly how they feel about him, they should just trade him for a (not LA) kings ransom. Get a scorer, a prospect and two number one picks out of him. There. I said it. I'm advocating a trade.

My mistake. I thought the NHL was a charity. Great point.:sarcasm:

That's not "truly how they feel about him." Not a single source has reported that. If they felt that way about him they wouldn't have offered him 6 and 8 year deals. Porty even reported today they were extremely impressed with his offseason conditioning and how he looked when he came back to Columbus. They may have some questions about him, but they don't think he's a prima donna.

hahahaha ok...so if they side with the CBJ, they're buddy buddy, if they side with Joey, they're right...and we are the ones being unfair... :shakehead

I love when IHZ voices an opinion that is different than mine. It lets me know I'm on the right track.

Can't say I blame Johansen's camp for declining the 6 and 8 year deals. Hell even the 3.5 for 2 isn't enough IMO. I am not a fan of us making all this info public. I just wish they would settle on 5-5.5 for 2 years and get it over with because I still feel thats what the contract will look like.

No, that's not really it. I'm just saying JD praise from Wysh isn't really credible because they have an existing buddy-buddy relationship.

I don't think the front office's take it or leave, bow down kid approach is good for the franchise. That doesn't mean they need to cave to crazy demands, but they can work out the business in private and show some class. I don't see Doug Armstrong calling out Jaden Schwartz's agent in public.

JD: Offered 6-year, $32 million deal to Johansen. Offered 8-year, $46 million too. Nowhere near what they want. Enough is enough

That is more than enough. If they really countered those offers with some crazy number, I would tell them we are done negotiating.

That's very close to where it should be. He should get Bob's contract.

and I'm saying that Wysh is a respected person in the media and if he did that, he'd lose reputation...I can't remember anything from Wysh that I would call "buddy buddy" about JD...no more than some of the other respected GMs

If you give him $10 million to $11 million over 2 years for one good year, just imagine what he will ask for when he is do for his next contract. He will be asking for 8 years and $80+ million probably. $10 million to $11 million is WAY to much.

if he earns 8/$80 then good on him, i'm willing to pay it...that part doesn't bother me...
