This is pretty normal for a wings prospect. Play out your ELC in the AHL and dominate it with some call ups to get used to the NHL along the way. He'll be on the wings next year, possibly even before that for the playoffs.

And no, he wouldnt have so many options after his contract is up. He restricted

ELC in NHL 700k pa / 70 k in AHL?
Wings way = 210k earnings over 3 years
Insert team y way, assume 50% NHL/AHL split = 1,15mil over 3 years

If I was a wings prospect I'd demand an extra million or so in my next contract as they robbed me. It doesnt work that way yes, but you have to seriously wonder if it's creating ill will among players who would then one day be less likely to renew or gve a home town discount?

The majority of the prospects they leave in Grand Rapids are late-round picks and are considered long-term projects. Players like Tatar, Pulkkinen, Nyquist, etc required a lot of time in the AHL to become what they are today. Sure, maybe they sacrifice a million or so in their early 20s, but the potential for a long-term, successful NHL career as an impact forward is a risk worth taking.

Calle Jarnkrok could have been a top 6 center for Detroit down the road for a long time making 5+ million a season, but because he thought he was entitled to play in the NHL at 22 he's now a bottom six player. There's still time for him to turn it around, of course, but who knows what will happen playing for a team that wants to win a Cup.

Tomas Tatar road the bus for four years and is now top 6 forward. He's been rewarded for his patience when he likely wouldn't even be in the NHL if another team drafted him. The Red Wings take care of the players that buy into their system. The players that believe what they're selling stick around and the ones that don't are shipped off.

Or they could look at the other players and see how good they have developed and be happy that in the future they are going to be better players because of it? Pulkkinen wasnt ready for the NHL this year but with an extra year of development down the road he could be a stud. On his contracts when hes older I'm sure hes going to make back those "millions" hes missing out on and then some because he was developed properly.

It hasnt created ill will in the last 15 years besides Jarnkrok really, so why would we assume it does for most players? I think you look at what Nyquist is doing now in the NHL and accept the wings know whats best for you

Well last year it was Jarnkrok. This year it's Backman. Maybe the vaunted Wings development model is showing some cracks? Might be time to tweak it a bit.

You must be new to NHL hockey. Like the posters above me said, this is just the Wings way of developing prospects. It has worked them wonders, so why change now. It's not like Pulu is any special compared to Tatar or Nyquist and all the guys before them.

So just relax and let them work their magic over there.

You make these assumptions based on personal preferences about where player should or should not play?

The guy is dominating AHL. Yeah there are examples of others who were doing the same and didn't or haven't made it big in the league. I know I'm not the most patient person out there and I am well aware how Detroit brings up it's prospects. I'd still far rather have him playing now than later. You cannot really even judge if one is NHL already or not with +/- 10mins ice time. Other than that, i'm not so convinced the Wings have that much space in the system either.

Backman isn't good enough to play in the AHL right now. What makes you think he's close to being NHL ready? He's a 5th round pick that needs time to develop.

in this case it's not even just about holding him down for the sake of it for once

realistically if everyone's healthy who even sits for him? the Wings have a really deep group of forwards this year(Datsyuk,Zetterberg,Nyquist,Tatar,Franzen,Jurco,Sheahan,Helm,Abdelkader,Weiss,Glendenning,Miller)

I mean I guess you could sit Miller and move the lineup around (Helm to the 4th etc) but it's not like past years with guys like Cleary taking up spots every night

Miller's a big part of our PK that used to be top 3 in the league before Howard went down. No way he sits so Pulkinnen can play 10 minutes a night. Unless multiple top 9 guys are out (which isn't unrealistic at all), Pulkinnen's gonna stay in the ahl for this year, which honestly might be best for this team and him. He looks good but I don't think he's a guy who's going to jump right in and instantly be better than a Franzen or a Jurco (despite their struggles).

The impatience guys like Jarnkrok and Backman (and Ryno before that) start to voice doesn't seem to sit well at all with Detroit- and I think that's a big part of why their development system works. I'm sure every guy wants to make it to the NHL as fast as they can- but unless you're absolutely tearing it up in the AHL it can't help but feel like money is sitting too high on a guy's list of priorities if they start up the entitlement bus before there's even any gas in the tank.

I remember being blown away at the difference even from the first AHL preseason Jarnkrok and Pulkkinen were in NA. Jarnkrok obviously had skill but never seemed to get much done- at least offensively, which at his size/weight might be necessary. Pulkkinen plays like he loves just playng the game- and from his very first NA shift hustled way more and skated way better than I expected.

Pulkkinen keeps saying he doesn't worry about where he's playing and has enough to learn that it's not his job to be concerned with that side of things. Gustav Nyquist is another guy who kept quiet and probably spent more time than he had to in GR...

26 goals, 24 assists, 50 points in 39 games.

Wow. It feels like ages ago when the Granlund-Pulkkinen duo was deadly in junior tournaments. Great to see Pulkkinen come to his own in North America too.

I remember during the draft this kid was a potential 1st rounder/early 2nd.

Maybe i'm incorrect, but wasn't it even speculated at some point way before the draft that he would be a top 10 pick?

Possibly, though I think top 10 may be a little higher than what I remember. Either way there's no reason guys like this should fall into the 4th round, no matter how bad you pick apart their game. Just moronic.

One of The Hockey Writers or Hockey Prospectus had him Top 5 in their way too early preview during the big buildup issue to the draft the year prior. Pulkkinen began his draft year with a lot of hype, got injured and also was the victim of over-analysis in my opinion. Though to be fair he still has a fairly ugly stride and the way his legs locked back then had people plenty scared and thinking it played a role in his hip problems if I remember right.

Can't wait to see him in the NHL full time next season. At worst, he should be decent scoring depth on the Wings deep forward group next season:

Nyquist Zetterberg Abdelkader
Tatar Datsyuk Franzen
Pulkkinen Sheahan Helm
Weiss Glendening Miller

Jurco? Mantha?????? Cleary (lol)?

No idea where everyone is going to slot into the lineup next season. A 4th line of Helm, Abdelkader, and Glendening would be killer but I know Babcock won't play Abs and Helm down that low unfortunately.

Cannot believe they signed Weiss. Such a un-typical Red Wing move there. Brutal contract.

He's actually played pretty well this year surprisingly.....leading the Wings in points per game IIRC (granted, he's only played 27 games) with 11 minutes of ice time a game. Doesn't look like he'll ever be a center here though.

He's never had any hip problems.

Weiss has been awesome this year. Playing from the third line hes on a pace for 52 points in 82 games from the third line. Hes a huge reason why the wings have been so good, because theyre getting a lot of secondary scoring.

Weiss right now isnt the reason Pulkkinen isnt playing and the wings are very happy with him this year. I wouldnt be surprised to see Pulkkinen in the line up come playoff time but the wings arent going to play him Andersson or some other 4th liners minutes a game right NOW. Come playoff time when player development plays second fiddle, I can see Pulkkinen being some fourth line secondary scoring for the wings. Weiss will be in the line up as well
