RW Teemu Pulkkinen (2010, 111th overall, Detroit) II

It's tough to call a 3rd round pick a bust when his talent is pretty much equal to an average 3rd rounder. Nestrasil a decent depth player, but nothing to worry about after losing on waivers. He was waiver fodder in the Detroit system for a while now. I was surprised that he even got a shot.

Wonder what's the percentage of 3rd rounders to ever make it to NHL. I'm fairly confident Pulkkinen will make it so not sure if we are talking of average here. Could of course be wrong. Guess time will tell.

Owning the AHL right now. Would love to see him get a shot with the Wings soon, but unfortunately that would mean one of the current roster players suffers an injury.

16+18 in 29 games, 1+3 tonight. Will he get any games in Detroit this season? or will they let him score 100 points in the AHL and then trade for a 5th rounder :naughty:

Im a big teemu fan, but there just is not any room for him at the moment, and the Wings finally are not having injury problems. I assume he will be the first call up if needed though.

Between Helm, Datsyuk, Weiss, and Franzen. You know the injuries will come eventually.
The injuries were already there, but Pulkkinen has not been called up yet. I guess Holland prefers him to have a lot of TOI (including PP action) with the Griffins over 10 minutes with the Red Wings - he used the same reasoning with regard to Mrazek. Also both Andersson and Cleary have improved over their last season's performances; Babcocks trusts both a lot.

Pulkkinen's situation is very interesting in general as well. It seems to me that he is the current prospect with the steadiest and most thorough improvements, developing from a slap shot scoring phenomenon with questions about his skating and effort in Finland to an AHL top forward. Yet there are already two other smaller skilled forwards on the Red Wings roster in Nyquist and Tatar; unless Mantha develops worse than anybody expected, he might be another winger option after some AHL seasoning.

Right now, I expect Pulkinnen to be added to the Red Wings roster next season and to get ample TOI in 3rd line and PP action; unfortunately the usual injuries to the above-mentioned players alone will create an opening for him. However, Pulkkinen has evolved into a very attractive trade chip and seems to be more expendable for Detroit than other forwards...

Agreed with all except for the bolded. I guess if you're talking for just this year, then yeah he's more expendable. In the long run I disagree though. He's a goal scorer who can finish and can be great on the power play as well if all goes as expected. Finishing has been a problem for years here. I'd rather not move Pulkinnen considering that. I'd say of the young wingers: Nyquist, Jurco, Tatar, Pulkinnen, Mantha (yeah I know Nyquist is 25), Jurco is the most expendable. I just don't see the high end potential other fans see in him.

Is the Brett Hull comparison apt? By style of play, ofcourse. Not potential.

You tell me:

Jokes aside, he has improved a lot in terms of being an all-around hockey player. He would be a top-6 forward on any NHL team that isn't ridiculously stacked with healthy high-end forwards.

I don't think many real Wings fans think Jurco has high end skill. He's a good player but not elite. His value comes from his size and physicality paired with offensive ability. We don't have many forward prospects who can grind like Jurco and can still contribute offensively. In that sense I think we should keep him. Nyquist, Tatar, and Pulkkinen are all extremely similar players. I would pick one from that group to move ....probably Tatar because he could return the most right now while still being replaceable. That said, I'd rather just keep them all and role 4 legit scoring lines. I really don't think you need a true checking line in today's NHL.

So it's 9 goals in 8 games now? Hopefully we'll get to see him on the Wings soon...

Please, please, please call him up with Jurco and Franzen out Holland. Even if he does nothing he'll still be better than Cleary.
