Can't wait to see him in the NHL full time next season. At worst, he should be decent scoring depth on the Wings deep forward group next season:

Nyquist Zetterberg Abdelkader
Tatar Datsyuk Franzen
Pulkkinen Sheahan Helm
Weiss Glendening Miller

Jurco? Mantha?????? Cleary (lol)?

No idea where everyone is going to slot into the lineup next season. A 4th line of Helm, Abdelkader, and Glendening would be killer but I know Babcock won't play Abs and Helm down that low unfortunately.

Franzen is done. Mantha will likely play another year in Grand Rapids. Cleary retires.

Cannot believe they signed Weiss. Such a un-typical Red Wing move there. Brutal contract.

He's been fine this season, at least when he plays. They signed him before they knew what they had in the kids. Really no other options since they weren't going to go into a season with unproven rookies. He's only signed for three more seasons. Far from being a brutal contract.

Thought he dealt with a hip-pointer issue in his draft year. It has been a while now, I know he was banged up for some of it at least that was a part of the story the Wings told when they were elated to draft him where they did.

Nope. Knee (or was it ankle) and shoulder injury. The latter prevented him from taking part in the Combine's physical tests (though he measured the grip strength in his right hand). There has never been any mention of a hip injury.

I know that seems to be the speculation on the Wings board, but I doubt it. He might be "done" in the sense that he'll never be what he was (I agree with that) but I highly doubt he's played his last game as a Red Wing. He's been injured numerous times before and always comes back. I don't see why this time would necessarily be the straw that broke the camel's back, absent some evidence to that conclusion.

Well last year it was Jarnkrok. This year it's Backman. Maybe the vaunted Wings development model is showing some cracks? Might be time to tweak it a bit.

Backman wanted minutes. Any pro minutes. Jarnkrok wanted a roster spot. And only an NHL roster spot. Different situations.

Tatar actually made some disgruntled comments the year before he was full time, too, but he stayed smart.

Interestingly, the guy with the most legit claim to an unwarranted NHL deferral is Nyquist who, to my knowledge, never caused a problem about it.

If we get the Weiss of this year for the rest of his contract it's not brutal at all. Maybe overpaid, but manageable. He's been progressively improving as well.

There's going to be a major logjam at forward over the next 1-2 seasons. I expect a trade incoming. We just can't keep them all. As much as it pains me to say, I think Jurco and/or Pulkkinen could be packaged for a defenseman. There's no way Mantha is leaving. Babcock likes him too much.

Yep. Something has got to give.

Case in point Cleary is still on our roster.

Any chance he gets called back up or is he pretty much in the AHL for the rest of the year?

It is difficult to guess since there are too many questions to be anwered. If Franzen returns, the forward positions are even more stacked.

Pulkkinen might trade some NHL TOI with Jurco, who is also waiver-exempt (and has cooled off considerably), just like Detroit did with Ouellet/Marchenko. Other than that, I do not see him back in Detroit, where his stint wasn't too bad, but certainly not overwhelming either.

Detroit would much rather have a healthy Jurco play a bottom six role due to his size, hitting, and scoring touch for the playoffs. It will do wonders for Pulkkinen if he can lead the Griffins deep into the AHL playoffs (assuming they make it).

Jurco has played very well since his return, imo.

The Wings have a history of bringing up these guys late in the season and putting them on the playoff roster. Tatar couldn't play very well defensively so that was a large part of why he was the only guy that didn't get the treatment, but Blashill did a wonderful job fixing that by the time he hit the big club.

Still Helm, Abdelkader, Nyquist, and Ericsson were essentially in the Wings plans in terms of the post-season. They have wonderful depth up front, but they do have a history of this is our best team come that time of the year, so it will be telling if Pulkkinen really is a third/fourth line Winger and second PP guy come the post-season. It certainly would not surprise me to see him come up for good in late March.

People look at stats too much with Jurco. He's been asked to provide a strong body that hits and is tough to play against. Look at his +/-, he's defensively sound (has improved a lot), he plays physical, and he makes plays. He's got a good amount of assists just his goal scoring is down. There's no way Jurco is traded.

I still believe Jurco has the best potential of any of the young forwards. Once he grows into his body more and earns 18+ minutes a night playing on the power play he's going to be a deadly player.

Pulkkinen with another three points tonight. 14 points (7+9) in his last 6 games.

2 goals and an a assist tonight.

For real, he is just too good for the AHL. He has nothing to prove at this point. Holland should just waive Andersson and bring him up full time.

He's finishing the season in Grand Rapids unless there are injuries or he's traded.

How'd he look last callup? Does his play style translate decently to the NHL level?

Scored a goal, underrated defensively, smart and heavy on the puck. His bomb of a shot over-shadows how savvy of a player he truly is in all 3 zones.

That said, he needs to adjust to the speed of the NHL and learn how to get his shot off quicker. I guess he looks a bit timid and tries to do to much himself, but no doubt he'll settle in nicely after he gets some games in and builds chemistry with his new teammates.

How about a 3rd line of Jurco-Weiss-Pulkkinen. Now doesn't that sound delicious?

I agree, Tats agent threatened to go KHL, Nyquist was demoted to the AHL to start the season, subsequent to his exceptional playoff series against the hawks. Babcock claimed he wasn't ready only called him up when injury troubles arrived... Nyquist then finished the season with 30goals, clearly he was ready. Jarnkrok never even given a shot, Almqvist never given a fair shot. Great way to reward a player who spends 2 years in the AHL and leads all defenseman in assists - call up Lashoff over him. Babcock doesn't handle the euros well, which is also why Flip left. Babcock would run a team out of Lashoffs and Glendenings if he could. Im surprised Cleary isn't on the 1st line any more lol. Nestrasil cut too soon, he has shown some potential in Carolina. Puukinen should be on this team 100%, no Q's about it. Ken Kal even said a few games ago in not as many words that Babcock must play the youngsters before the trade deadline, since Jarnkrok was given up last year without a look (someone in the org. was not happy about that) hense the call-ups for Oulette and Marchy, and more to come.

I agree but that comes with games played in the NHL, not in the AHL. He needs to be up ASAP so by playoffs they can use him on the PP, will be a huge upgrade.
