Something tells me Smith will have well >100 points in the bank before Michkov sets foot. Is he as dynamic - likely no. Is he as skilled - maybe. Is he a potential first line centre - absolutely.

He’s an elite playmaker and has been the best player at that NTDP age group since he was a little kid and is super competitive.

I would not blame the Sharks at all for picking Smith. What if Michkov turns out to be no more effective than Caufield? What if he has a couple 40 goal seasons like DeBrincat and we’re sitting here years down the road arguing he’s not worth his qualifying offer?

I don’t know…colour me skeptical, Mr. Chistov.

So you say Smith is going to be 100 point player at age 21?

And what if Bedard is the next Daigle? Carlsson next Kotkaniemi? Fantilli next Bill Guerin?

Ah, my bad. Still means he's gonna be at Jack Hughes level.
No, it doesn’t. It means that over the course of his first two seasons, I believe Smith has enough talent to get >100 points over 160 games. I am not comparing him to Jack Hughes but I am saying the Sharks would be fools not to do extensive due diligence on Smith. He could be their Zegras…

That's what Hughes was though. At age 21 he had 108 points after 166 games.

Well, there you go. Maybe he is in the same tier as Jack in terms of point potential. But I am not saying he’s Jack Hughes. It is just fun to speculate.

Regardless, I stand by my view that Smith is the right choice for SJ.

Hard to justify passing on Michkov at 4 IMO. If you are getting a massive C with proven production like Fantilli or Carlsson, that’s different. There is a Smith in every draft.

It's not completely true actually. The last time the kid with 20 points in 7 WJC U18 games and 2+ PPG in USHL went 1OA...

Aside from the 3 yr KHL contract, apparently there are alot of concerns with "outside noise" with Michkov. This was from the Jeff Marek show this morning.

There seems to be a lot of baggage that comes with Mihckov with no gurantee that he would even be in North America in 3 years.

If Michkov inexplicably fell to the Sabres it would be such a perfect pick. That have plenty of forward prospect depth so waiting 2-4 years for him to come over would be a homerun. Not likely to happen but of every team they have insulation where they wouldnt need him to come over anytime soon
If Michkov falls past 3 it’s a perfect fit for every team.

I want to understand what this is exactly. I keep hearing it but with no details. I think character is a top trait for Grier so I’m going to guess this particular factor would be his biggest concern and what may ultimately lead him to pick Smith over Michkov… if it’s true.

I just cannot see a market like Montreal being ok with a minimum 3 year wait. Sharks could absolutely do it.
