ok I have a question about Mitchkov. he is under contract with the khl for 3 more years. so, no matter which team picks him at the draft. In 3 years when he finally able to sign in the NHL he would as normal get an entry level contract ( cheap) all the khl has to do is offer say 6mil tax free every year and then no way he come over for 850k for 3 years RIGHT???

KHL isn't able to offer him $6M/year because it's about half of the salary cap. He'll be able to get $1.5M max, which is probably about $3M of NHL money, and even then I doubt SKA will pay him that much.

People criticizing Michkov for his Men National team play need to check on Fantilli

Carlsson on the other hand looks good. Of course he plays with good linemates but still. But I'm pretty sure if Michkov played 14 min/game on top2 lines he'd have looked even better...

What's the feeling in Russia about him coming over to North America ? Are the concerns from NHL teams legitimate ?

Well hardcore hockey fans hate him because he plays for SKA, SKA fans don't care about NHL so they feel nothing about him coming to NA, casual fans probably don't even know that NHL exists, experts obviously think he will (or rather he should) go to NA when his contract is over.

You've gotta be pretty damn casual to not know the NHL exists , what would they think that the top Russians on the national team etc just choose not to play hockey at all since they seemingly just vanished from the KHL? I would say if you know anything about hockey you must be aware of the NHL , or at least that there is a top league in NA where many players go.

Not following is one thing, but I find it extremely hard to believe that even casual SKA fans "don't know the NHL exists ". I've met plenty of Russians since I'm an expat in Thailand (there are lots of Russians here), I don't think I've ever met anyone who doesn't at least know of Ovechkin, these aren't hockey fans either , and they still know who he is.

Now could they tell you who he plays for? Often times not, but they are well aware he plays in North America and not in Russia for his club team.

That would be like saying casual Canadian soccer fans "don't even know the EPL or German league etc. exists". It's not possible, you're not even a casual you just don't follow the sport whatsoever if that's the case. Anyone who follows the KHL even to the slightest degree is aware that a league exists in NA and it's a big draw for the top Russian players. Maybe if you literally don't follow hockey at all , I buy it, but there is no way anyone follows hockey even just a little bit and doesn't know what the NHL is

Ok, do you know what Vanuatu is? Probably yes. Do you know where is it? Maybe even yes. Do you know how is it to live there? I'm pretty sure you don't and just don't give a damn. The same about NHL and Russian casual fans. Most of them don't even care about KHL...

"Most Russians" and "casual fans" are not the same thing. If you are a fan of hockey , even a casual one, you know that the NHL exists. There's a big difference between being a casual fan and someone who doesn't follow the sport at all. One implies that you pay at least *some* attention to the games/team/sport. The other just means you're Russian. You said casual fans don't know the NHL even exists, and I'm calling bs on that one because I think anyone who is even pays a small attention to the KHL knows that the NHL exists.

If someone doesn't know anything about hockey whatsoever, doesn't follow the KHL , etc then yes, maybe they are completely unaware that there are professional hockey leagues at all. I still think anyone who could possibly call themselves a fan in any capacity (even casuals) know of the NHL's existence.

When the poster above asked what the feeling was like in Russia, I assume they mean of people who know enough about hockey to know who an 18 year old prospect is, not just randoms off the street lol. Of course there will be people who don't know or care about hockey in any capacity, there are tons of people in Canada who have no idea who Connor bedard is or that the Blackhawks won the lottery, but I would say any "casual" fan of the NHL is aware that the Chicago Blackhawks exist. Unless your definition of a casual fan is someone who pays no attention at all, which I would call non hockey fans.

Man, I know what I'm talking about. Some casual fans don't even know what hockey is. They just know something about it, like it's on the ice and played with sticks and the puck. That's it. They recall that hockey exists only when Russian national team plays and forget about it till the next time. And that's probably absolute majority of Russian hockey fans... or so called fans.

That's why Russian NT has crazy TV ratings and KHL... well, probably 20 times less.

I'm sorry, we have a different definitely of what a fan is, in any capacity.

Michkov is going to be a good one though

Blackhawks director of amateur scouting, Mike Doneghey, about Michkov:

"I guess there’s always that risk because he’d still be a 21-year-old kid. But in defense of Matvei, the little that I have talked to him, he’s got the competitive personality where I think he wants to get over here as soon as he can to prove to people that he should have been in this race all along."

Same thing with Simashev, the kid talks about how much he wants to come over to the NHL and succeed. I don't think there's much risk at all with either of these kids coming over.

My mom knows what the NHL is and I don't think she's ever watched a game of hockey in her life

I think he’s talking about actual fans. Like ceiling fans, industrial fans, etc. It’s true that they don’t know what the NHL is. I just asked my oscillating fan if it knows what hockey is and it just shook its head.

Lol. He just put up the best draft year eligiable season of any Russian player in KHL's history. On a terrible team that primarily functions as SKA's farm team. Did these ''many'' people anticipate that he would win the KHL scoring title?
Again, LOL.

Michkov must've had some pretty poor advisors to sign a 3 year deal with SKA.
You contradict yourself
You cant have both "Lol what did you expect" and "played on a farm team".

How so? Anyone who's disappointed in his historic season are insane. If you expected more from him while he played for one of the worst teams in KHL you are insane.

Yeah, the majority of Russian interest in hockey is derived from interest in national team.
Your other point is ridiculous though. I have never met a single person in my life who is at least superficially interested in hockey and doesn't know about the NHL. That includes my 87 year old grandmother.

So, answering the question, people in Russia don't really have a lot of sentimental or megalomaniac feelings about the KHL due to multiple reasons. Actual fans expect top players to play in the NHL.

I expected him to be an impact player in a good team. How is that insane?

I find absurd the arguments and fears conveyed in the speech that Michkov could become a prisoner of Russia, an action that would be taken by Putin in retaliation for the Canada/USA with which his nation is in a "cold war".

This type of behavior is LITERALLY CONTRARY to Russian behavior;

- This nation continues to want to send its athletes to the Olympic Games. It did so under the ROC banner in 2020.

- Russia still wants to send its soccer players to various FIFA tournaments (but they are not allowed).

- Many Russian soccer players play for various European soccer clubs.

One constant is observable: Russia, through its athletes, has historically enjoyed dominating certain sports in the eyes of the world. To suddenly turn in on itself and prevent its athletes from shining at international level is inconsistent with its historical approach.

It's through the past that we can predict the future.

Michkov is going to do his 3-year contract in the KHL, yes!

Mishkov will NOT be imprisoned in Russia, since he brings greater benefit to his homeland by playing abroad than the other way around.

Has this interview been posted yet ?

I think Google translate should do a decent job, but he says he’s not going to the combine, but he will be at the draft, says he doesn’t care who drafts him and he’s not thinking about the NHL just yet

I love this moment: "I'll give myself 5 days to rest and then gonna work as hard as never before".

Wouldn't whatever team he plays for be able to pay him "under the table" ?

I mean, CHL teams can do that and rarely get caught I'm sure Russian teams can do it.

It's absolute bullshit there is undertable money in the KHL. It's not 90s anymore. The league and teams would really hate anything like this, and punishment could be really severe to even think about undertable payments.
