Wonder if this makes him defect faster than waiting 3 years due to his contract
This is something the NHL won't allow him to do (player needs to be free of the KHL contract to sign in the NHL by the current rules).

It could have an affect on his career though, as his father was much closer to him than an average hockey player's father would be, Michkov was going anywhere only with him, so the teams had to hire him as a coach (you could find him listed at SKA, Sochi and even Team Russia staff lists). With that in mind I wouldn't be too surprised if Michkov decides to pause his career for indefinite time.

Ouf.. not to derail the thread but what happened with Marco Rossi? I remember so many wild projections of this guy and so far nothing special stats-wise..
He’s PPG in the AHL. I’d say he’s doing “fine” for his draft spot especially with how Covid has impacted that group at critical development years. Question with him since draft day has always been how will his scoring carry over to NHL

I think he ends up slipping, there’s a lot of risk taking a Russian player that is locked in for 3 more years in the top 10. The development path for a top 10 pick is to be under team control within 2 years and I highly doubt Russia will let Michkov go to the NHL easily. They will try their hardest to lock up a generational talent.

He should be 4th or 5th, anything lower than that would be insane& I’d want my Gm fired if he passed on him on those spots

There is risk with every player to some degree. Unless Michkov comes out and says he doesn't want to play in the KHL, I think him never coming over is close to zero risk, it'll just be a while. The KHL hasn't been that much of a threat as far as Russian prospects not coming over in a while.

Who would you rather have - 21 year old shoot first Nikita Kucherov under team control for 6 years starting in 3 years? Or Pierre-Luc Dubois under control immediately for the next 7 years?

The answer is Kucherov (Michkov).

How horrendous for Matvei, and his family. Losing a close loved one is intensely difficult, and I can only imagine how much harder it is with fame. I wish him and his family peace in such a difficult time. He lives a life of intense responsibility, and he seems to shoulder it well for a young person. I hope he reaches his full potential, in spite of this tragedy.

This post sounds like you know for sure he hadn't any mental issues or depression or something. Unless someone here somehow does I don't see how we can believe it or not here.

There are things the autopsy can determine, for example if there are substances in his blood or if there were any injuries potentially caused by fighting or if he died from drowning or before that etc. If nothing like that is found along the lack of additional evidence they are likely going to call suicide and only the ones who knew him can actually conclude if they believe it or not.
I dont want to get even close to political here so I'm going to just say I think its best we just avoid this conversation.

No matter what, it is terrible for an 18 year old to lose his dad.

Sam thing with Malkin or Andrew Ladd.

Imagine the Penguins went with Ladd instead because they didn’t wanna wait two years.

Kaprizov/Panarin/Kuzmenko... all of these names and more should have put to bed the idea of passing on high-end Russian talent

Nowadays it seems when they show up they start right up

What are assuming this on?
About the only reason I could see someone leave sooner is because he wants a fresh start and wants to put things behind him.

The question kind of becomes if he does want that new start, does he ask for a trade out of Sochi or try get out of his contract to come to NHL.
