Maybe I'm just a big Kostin fan, but stats don't tell the whole story with him.

Of the video I've seen of him, it's clear he has a really solid skill set, NHL size, skating and edgework that won't limit him at the least, and seems to understand soft spots.

I think he just needs some stability to put up numbers, and he hasn't gotten that.

Now he's injured.

It's been a lost year for him. Kostin has been hurt and played hurt.

Even though he has fallen in most rankings, I think he is better than most guys in the 10-30 range.

Thought he was dominant in the Subway series, but has fallen off the map since then....still risk drafting Russians in the first round, as the Stars found out with Nichushkin....some team will be happy if he falls to far though.

He reminds me a lot of Nichushkin. A lot of skating around in circles and holding the puck, but not a ton of substance/production.

I'll be surprised if he becomes anything significant.

Please. Nichushkin is a hell of a prospect and will show it again when he returns.

I don't really see the Nichushkin comparison personally. To me, Nichushkin was a guy who has tunnel vision and one move, drive to the net.

I respect your opinion, however.

I watched him super closely during the Super Series, because he played on German Rubtsov's line mostly and I'm a Flyers fan, and while I admit that's not a large sample, he was driving me up a wall watching him. It seemed like he had no clue how to use his teammates. Just tried to do everything himself. The size and tools are impressive, but the mental part of the game was just a complete disappointment.

What you've seen is what I've called 'being mesmerized while carrying the puck' in an earlier post. Actually it is more like "I'm gonna skate around everyone and pass it to to the open net... just a bit more... and a bit more... oh, ****". :D I'm seeing that from time to time in junior players, don't see anything tragic with that, just will need some time.

Anyway, if you would seen the puck distribution what he had done at the U18 WJC (he didn't score a single goal here, yet was the best player on the team) and Hlinka's, you'd definitely wouldn't have this impression.

And yes, returning to Nichushkin comparison, when Nichushkin is protecting the puck, he is trying to get it towards the net, when Kostin is protecting the puck, he is mostly doing that somewhere around. Not to mention that I never seen Nichushkin distributing the puck the way I've seen Kostin do it.

Sergei Kostin, Klim's father, said today: "Klim told me he ready to play for Tampa Bay Lightning for plate of soup. He dream about this club since he was 10-11 years old. Also, we were meeting with Steve Yzerman at Hlinka Memorial in Slovakia"

The Nichushkin comparison is more about their one-dimensional approach to offense whilst carrying the puck. They're both puck possessors who have one weapon when they get the puck. Both will fail to utilize teammates properly and once they get going, they don't slow the game down or change pace and direction.

Nichushkin certainly drives to the net more while Kostin stays more along the perimeter, passing rather than shooting. I just don't see high IQ from either of them.

That's the impression I've always gotten from him when I watch him play. I see low IQ.

Classic boom or bust prospect.....what was the surgery for?...shoulder?......can't teach his size or skill-set however, but hockey-sense and the mental side of the game, who knows?...not a very strong draft though....he'll go somewhere from 16-20th overall.

From the latest CSS rankings:

The No. 1 skater on Central Scouting's international list is forward Klim Kostin (6-3, 196) of Dynamo Moscow in the Kontinental Hockey League. Kostin had shoulder surgery performed in January and hasn't played since. Like Patrick, Kostin proved in earlier viewings that he has the necessary tools to excel at the next level.

"[Kostin] is as close to a complete package with a good combination of size and mobility," said Goran Stubb, European director of NHL Central Scouting.

Actually, I think you'll find that the track record of Russian players drafted in the first round out of the Russian system is better than that of almost any other Group of draftees. As opposed to Russian players already playing in North America when they were drafted, where the opposite is the case. Particularly if they were left in Russia until NHL-ready after being drafted.
