Connor McDavid would have at least 250 points every season with "better luck", but sadly that just doesn't happen, cause goaltenders are pretty good in professional hockey and they tend to cause opponents "bad luck" quite often.
Yes u have a great point there. However majority of the gks tends to be more or less unstabile, which means that even after hot streaks that one might have they also have bad games cuz they r only humans. They affect to luck by themselves on how good day and abilities they have (either athletic, basic hockey skills and mental side).
I havent seen enough games from every TPS's opponents to analyze their gks and when they are on their game, but even if there have been evidence of them shutting out Kakko and co's there also have been several post shots that usually beats the gk but not the post (=bad luck; even if it was cuz gk forced to shoot of the post, fatigue effected on the shot, or the shot hit the stick of Dman on the way to the post etc...)
Also luck effects to individuals life one other way too. How are the teammates doing in the game (hows their confidence lvl atm, do they have some other struggless etc...) that means that their lvl of playing affects to individual's personal success aswell in the games. Great players tho doesnt need same tier players necessarily if they can make players around them better creating plays and are constantly able to deliver the puck for them for grade A chances (empty nets, 1 on 1 situations, breakaways, loose puck chances in the crease, rebounds etc...). But ofc the luck factor gets higher when u have fresh players delivering ur passes or rebounds and they have ability and skill to put them home. I dont say that TPS teammates doesnt have the ability, but its either some preparation, problems with confidence, tactical side or some other thing coming from outside that influence negatively to their game atm.. One guy cant do too much even if I think Kakko is already a game changer by himself aswell, but young and at times inexperienced to carry all that load by himself. (Maybe even appearance for trying to do too much on his own affects to their results in some situation, cuz he wants to win every situation that much)
Hockey's being a teamgame theres always luck that has some role to the success, even in wide margin games, but especially the tight ones, that we're going to see more when the poffs starts.
My point wasnt to underestimate goaltenders role even if some successful gks might get advantage playing in front of great defence, and others has abilities to change the luck and momentum to their side. Tho even gk role is evolving, mostly cuz of rule changes and goal crease changes, that it wuld become more and more entertaining for the crowd to watch and pay to see all their favorites scoring more and more.
I wuld even say that Gretzky, even if he was a great player, he also was lucky to play with great players throughout his career, and he stayed healthy unlike Mario Lemieux (who unluckily suffered all kinds of cancers and other health problems). That being said, it doesnt mean that bad luck players are bad players, cuz everybody will face that time when luck seems not to be on their side at all (yes even McDavid).
And I'm actually pretty sure that if somebody, then its most likely McDavid, who has chances to get pretty close to those Gretzky's premier ssn numbers, but even that requires all the luck with better management, teammates, role (shuldnt play speedy 200 foot game like 25+ mins per game) and health to accomplish that. Luck has more and more less effect in the cases the better the player u are obviously.
All in all with all the struggless TPS have had I didnt stated that Kakko has been unlucky, vice versa he's still done a great job producing despite all that - so hes lucky and skilled player obv.
My main point despite exaggerating a bit of that "20 pts in 10 games" was to demonstrate the fact that hes playing in the wrong league, but cant rly yet to play any higher.
