Or maybe...he has dealt shit like; no one has ever believed in him because of his height,
so he is trying to prove that everyone is wrong about him and he wants to tell it out loud.

To some, it might sound like cockyness, but it also might sound like he has a need
to explain why he thinks (knows) people are wrong, he is really good at hockey
and he will be really good pro, in the NHL.

He believes in himself, when most do not, that's a good thing, not a bad thing.
I actually loved it, but in the world of hockey and team building, people might see it as a problem.

Dumais is not a bad skater. This is asinine. He just doesn't use it. Is Kane a bad skater because he slows the game down too?
You can't possibly be comparing his skating to that of Patrick Kane....

In order to be able to slow the play down at the NHL level, you have to be able to at least threaten to play at fast pace (or have a big body with puck protection skills). Dumais will not be able to back off NHL defenseman without remarkable improvements in his stride.

It's weird. I watched his stride when he tries to beat the D and he does just fine. He just likes to slow the game down and get the F2 and F3 involved into the play. Sounds like you'd watch Josh Anderson and always think he's gonna break out for 50 goal every year. Rush plays don't and shouldn't be based on speed.

I never said they needed to be based on speed, but in order to push the D back enough to have the time and space to wait for trailing teammates, you have to give said D a reason not to gap up. Speed, strength, or a wicked perimeter shot.

I'm not seeing that in the cards for him. Who knows though, I've been wrong before.

March was a bad month for him
7 points in 14 games, -20 (0.50 ppg)
and one 4 point game (+1)

In other 54 regular season games,
Jordan scored 102 points, was +25
and his point per game average was 1.88.

Yes, his last big month raised his average quite a bit, i know

People have definitely over stated how bad his skating is. People try to make him off to be Jason Allision. He is a good skater. But because he isn't some top 5 percentile burner blowing by guys and he is small he gets written off as an awful skater and falls down the draft boards. Just call it what it is.

He’s a smaller guy with lots of skill. He needs the puck on his stick to be effective. That means he will be a target for physical stuff. If he’s got the internal toughness of character to fight through that kind of attention then he will be a good add to an NHL team.
Does he have that kind of character?

Even if he had skating issues, in todays hockey its the easiest part to fix,
but experts, scouts etc. etc., like fans, they see the height and automatically think,
if he isn't a super duper fast skater, he will fail.

Man...Connor McDavid ruined hockey...LOL
-its like thats the current standard

Yes.

He also haves two way game,
- he has good without the puck skills,
good checker, plays with a long stick

Plays PK

He isn't afraid to go to the net either.

But because his role on the PP, is both
the shooter and the playmayker,
and he is the guy who runs the play 5 on 5,
you don't se him front of the net that often.

Sounds like a guy who (historically) will go in round three that has a very good chance to develop into a steal pick for whoever gets him. Skill, hockey sense, and character are huge.

Many doubted Alex DeBrincat (5 foot 7), fans, experts, scouts.

His draft was 6 years ago and we are still here,
still doubting smaller players...why?.

Stankoven (5 foot 7) should have been drafted 35-40 picks higher

I don’t think you’re wrong, but when you’re his size is that type of assessment a bad thing? Easy for fans to say it’s wrong. When you are tasked with finding NHL’ers, you often need to be that 5 percentile skater at his size.

Right now there are 25 forwards shorter than 5’10” in the league. So less than 1 for every team. That means shorter players have less of chance of making the show than taller players. Meanwhile there 41 forwards over 6’3” in the league.

No I mean I fully get why he isn't viewed as like a 1st rounder. I think it would be wild if he isn't a 2nd rounder though. His skating is absolutely something that does need to improve if he wants to be an impact player at the NHL level but I guess my point is he isn't trying to go from a bad skater to a great skater he needs to go from good to great. It is going to be a great gamble for a team to make if he is available in the mid rounds, hopefully a team with a good track record of player development.

I’ve watched all his games the last two years and his skating doesn’t concern me as much as if he can take a hit. He’s always in open ice and dumps the puck before he gets knocked. Opposition players are more focused on Desnoyer and Dumais finds sweet spots and can really dish the puck. I’m surprised there’s not more talk about Cataford who is an all around threat if people are really watching the games. Dumais still reminds me of Kotkaniemi pre draft. Great anticipation and vision with lack of speed but always in open ice

Disagree, he should have been a low first round pick IMO

In the games i saw him I was not impressed. Avoids traffic and is always waiting for the stretch pass. His skating is not great. His ankles look like they are in casts. He has his IQ and offensive skills but he will get pushed around and avoid puck battles. Kind of like Drouin without the speed.

I had posted this on April 23. I just thought that I should post the final ranking. Dumais finished #1 among all CHL Draft-Eligible player (17 year old only) in all 3 categories (Goals, Assists and Points) :

1. Jordan Dumais (68GP 39 Goals 70 Assists 109 Points)
2. Shane Wright (63 GP 32 Goals 62 Assists 94 Points)
3. Matthew Savoie (65 GP 35 Goals 55 Assists 90 Points)
4. Jagger Firkus (66GP 36 Goals 44 Assists 80 Points)
5. David Goyette (66 GP 33 Goals 40 Assists 73 Points)

It's a pretty large margin with only 5 more games than Wright, 3 on Savoie and 2 on Firkus and Goyette. I hope this final ranking will not bring Q League hate as it's not the purpose of this. What he did is pretty outstanding.

It will be fun to watch this in 3-4 years (with some AHL experience) and see which ones of those players became a bust or which ones are real deals. I guess that the consensus is that Dumais has the odds to become the bust, but let's see and enjoy the ride.

Goyette to me. His hockey IQ is awful.

QMJHL is the weakest league of the CHL.

According to a recent study (2021) called NHL Equivalency and Prospect Projection Models: Building the NHL Equivalency Model, each point scored in the Q worth 0.113 NHL point. Here's a comparation to the other CHL leagues and the USHL:

LeagueNHLe
OHL0.144
USHL0.143
WHL0.141
QMJHL0.113

Read it here:

His size (lack of) will play against him. Could be taken in the 2nd round, but most likely in the 3rd or 4th.
