At 96 it's a very worthwhile gamble to take a swing on Dumais.

It's true, the skating could very well hold him back from being an NHLer, but he's a great playmaker.

The depth in this draft is weak. Why not roll the dice on a kid with insane production? Can't fault this pick.

NICE

2 goals in first 5 minutes against St. Louis in Traverse City Tournament.

Obviously a prospect tournament, but like what I'm seeing from him here.

Also, aside from poor defending from St. Louis defenceman in this clip, Dumais shows some good wheels to break past defensive line and score his 2nd. Skating/Speed was one of his biggest knocks at the draft which I still think was an overrated flaw in his game.

Still wearing the 6 and the 9 I see. A little surprised Columbus allowed that...but that shit is funny

Dumais had numerous breakaways last year. He was seldom caught from behind.

One of the most underrated prospects in a while.
Gets crap because many thinks he can't skate...right....

Completely doominated the Q last season as an 17 year old,
is great at PP and PK, really good shot, passing ability and hockey IQ.

The whole "he can't skate" thing always felt more like people coming up with reasons to justify being wrong about him initially. He has never been a bad skater.
Is it that hes a bad skater or some believe hes not dynamic enough at his size to project as an NHLer? Ive never really seen the kid play so I have no opinion one way or the other. I just know that random scouting sites that post public lists could do goofy things like you suggest in your post but employed NHL scouts arent going to. That is their actual paying job so being petty and not admitting mistakes would be a pretty bad trait to have.

My post was slightly tongue in cheek. I do think he dropped in rankings because his skating isn't a truly elite skill in the 99th percentile. He also likes to slow the game down quite a bit in the offensive zone. Somehow this transformed into him being a bad skater though.

Comments on his skating at the draft:
The size of Dumais's shoulder pads isn't the only question mark that has been making observers hesitate about him. His skating also raised doubts.

"I think he's a guy with a little different skating," LeBlanc replies. In terms of speed, he's okay, but I think his style can be deceiving. And at its size, if people have doubts about the skate, it can play a role. But to do what he did this year, it takes special talents. It makes you think that every player has weaknesses, but when the strengths are big enough to compensate, I think it's worth it. »

"A little," admitted Dumais when asked if these criticisms were deserved. But I worked on it all summer, I'm still working on it. Two to three times a week, I have a trainer just for skating . All alone on the ice for an hour or two, just working on my stride. I do a lot of work on this. »

It’s definitely this.
I love the kid’s game and had him in my early 2nd but at his size, elite skating is something that is almost a necessity.

Here is what I wrote about him at the start of last season and all what I said I’d still say now - although he could have improved dramatically in his areas of weakness‘ in the off-season and I haven’t yet seen him play this year in order to develop an option on the such.
I too have questions about his skating but almost everything else about this kids game screams 1st rounder.

He has average acceleration at best and his strides aren’t really powerful enough to allow him to gain separation from his opponents.

He is a highly skilled player - he has fast hands, and his read of the play is good, the puck seems to follow him, and when it does, he tends to make the opposition pay. He does play with speed, but it's his hockey sense that puts him where he should be and is easily his best attribute.

3 assists in game 1 of the season.

Its gonna be a loong and booring season for him ;)
No way. This is going to be a fun season for him. His hands get better every game and he’s learning to pick apart defences with his puck control. He had a nice game yesterday. Always creating. Plays very seldom die on his stick. He’s now controlling the PP like a seasoned vet.

Could of have had 2 or 3 more points in this game,

One brilliant pass behind the net, but Vidicek couldn't bury,
also had a breakaway, but couldn't score, also one where he was a secondary
passer, but no goal.

Goal, 5 primary apples out of 6 in his first 2 games, not bad at all.

1 goal
6 assists
7 points
3.50 ppg
+4
5 sog

Sucks that Blue Jackets couldn't find a spot from that roster
had good camps and all, very little to do in the juniors,
but to wreck it again

Has a third round pick ever made the NHL in their D+1?
