No points, no fanfare from me.
He could look as good as humanly possible without points, but I guess those will come if he continues the consistent play.
Then again, he's only 19. Only time will tell..
3 games is an awfully small sample size for stat watching. It's actually amazing how different he looks compared to preseason. It's like he flipped a switch on physicality. He looks a lot more like the JP we saw in Liiga.

If you're flipping between an AHL player and a NHL player, some time there needs to be a small breakout like a multi-point night. It's not like he's definitely better than the alternative if all he does is that he gets good looks.
Consistency is what makes and breaks careers.

^he's looked pretty good since coming back from the AHL but he's still a little green. still a good prospect though.

Have faith Oilers fans. Pulju WILL be star player. Question is when. He's got the tools
Thats what I see personally and I'll stand by that assessment even if I end up being wrong. You can see the tools, and you can also see he's still a year or 2 away from really putting it together. He's definitely an NHLer right now, but once he gets a little bit stronger and continues to work on his coordination he has the package to be a really good player. He's close, but will need more time to really dominate physical battles, but when he does he's going to be a monster on the forecheck to contain with his reach, speed, and size combo. He's already looking very good and confident carrying the puck. When he starts getting 1st PP time with McDavid, and potentially 5v5 time with him I think he'll really start to take off.

Might be a year or 2 away, but I have tons of time for this kid.

To my eye, Pulju always had something lindross like. In Liiga and WJC already. Last season was just meh, but hes back on that track. Hes got crazy chance to become all around skilled offensive high speed wreight train. Even his puck handling is bit like lindross. Say what you wish but Lindross like player stylishly and perhaps close to that offensively is his roof and ceiling. Hope he gets the right training and nutrition.

Puljujärvi still seems to have the same issue where his first game where he gets to play with instinct and freedom he does well, then when he gets accustomed to the system and the coaching the wheels fall off, he stops producing and becomes less effective. It's been consistent almost everywhere he's been. That also is why I've been very cautious after the first game's success.

To me, he's a player who needs almost complete freedom and has to be able to do his thing. I'm not sure why - Maybe he just doesn't play well when he needs to also think about what the coach wants him to do. It could be that a less system-based and more freeform, "effort and encouragement" type coach would work better for him.

I remember him in that gold medal game in the under 18. I believe he scored 3 goals while not being 100%, sick all week during the tournament. Put a statement on his year from the gold medal at the WJC earlier in the year in that game where Finland won. For offensive players, coaches have to allow for creative freedom. This will come in time. Players that think too much will be stifled when they think instead of react instinctively. Puljujarvi has the skill and size. He can skate and be potentially a dominating player. Some players require more time. He was more physical last game, which is a plus. He is still feeling his way through being just called up. He's a young 19 in essentially his 2nd year in NA. I always give Finnish developed players more time, as there are have been many that have needed an adjustment period, the lesson is those players are now productive NHL players. Far too early to worry about Puljujarvi, he could easily be one of these players that just needed a season or 2 of NA adjustment.

Am I the only one who thinks he has lot of similarities with young OJ? Goofy kid with great expectations and poor level of english skills gets a shot in the NHL but isn't quite ready. I'm not saying that Pulju will take as long as OJ did finding his game, because I think Pulju is a lot more mature than OJ was. Just a thought that has popped in to my mind more than a few times. And I have to say that these guys have pretty much the same tools as well, just hoping Pulju will get his game together this season.

Well, his meme-potential is definitely on the level of OJ...

There is nothing wrong what so ever with Puljujarvi.

But EDM with that lack of support and capable two way player is a horrible fit for him, and he for EDM.

Edmonton has the most useless bottom6 in the league, with Pulju playing well in the previous 4 games putting him on the 3rd line doesn't seem like the best decision to me.

Todd should get him going, not to play with his confidence. The better he plays the better team Edmonton is.
The only thing missing is to see him get send down over worse players when injuriees come back into the lineup.

Puljujarvi finished the game today on the third line with Mike Cammalleri and Ryan Strome. The team looked to be trying new combinations with Leon Draisaitl taking Puljujarvi's place on the second line with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Milan Lucic.

The top line consisted of Maroon, McDavid, and Caggiula.

It really seems to me like he'd have a better chance succeeding somewhere else.

The way things are going in Edmonton, there is no sure thing if there will be a coaching change when all there is left to do is do the predictable thing. I am certainly not blaming Mclellen for all the Oilers troubles, but there are times a team tunes out a coach. It will be interesting what transpires there. Really underachieving, and one wonders if Puljujarvi will benefit from a new coach.

Oilers gotta hope the didnt ruin him by rushing him to the NHL

Draisaitl bounced back after a disaster rookie year, maybe puljujarvi does as well.
Yamamoto shouldnt have made an NHL roster. this team needs a couple top 6 forwards in the worst way

As far as I'm concerned McLellan and Chia should both be canned. McLellan is allergic to reasonable lineup decisions and has an obsession with playing vets, over-playing his stars, and not giving rookies/young players not named McDrai a chance. Its honestly mind-blowing that Jesse hasn't been tried with McDavid and somehow gets demoted to the 3rd line while being one of the better wingers on the team. Maroon and Lucic could both use a demotion to the bottom 6. Letestu should never be on the PP yet he gets spoon fed top PP minutes.

Jesse's still got improvements he needs to make to be an impact player, but Todd is utilizing him very poorly atm.

For f***s sake, for once try not to label the whole organization for "ruining a prospect". I don't get the concept of that, I never have, we're talking about professionals here. If the player can't make it, he is not good enough, simple as.

Ridiculous to see someone like Lucic getting a spot in the top-6 and Jesse gets demoted to lower lines after he has been hands down better than Lucic since Puljujärvi got called up.

But I guess Oilers needed to spread that offensive talent into lower lines with Jesse. :sarcasm:
