It was a nice goal by him. And also, while I missed tonight's game, the last game he looked... Pretty good to me. Both of these two games his advanced stats are also excellent.

Hopefully he'll have some more box score success soon.

That was a beautiful goal. I have held by this statement for a while, but in a year or so, he will be the Oilers' 2nd best forward
I don't think he'll ever surpass Draisaitl, but I do think he'll be a very good player. I think some people forget just how elite Draisaitl's IQ and playmaking is, and just how good he is when he's playing at his best. We haven't even seen Drai's best this year after his concussion, and he's still almost PPG. He doesn't have a single point on the PP either.

Back to Jesse, what a shot that was. I'd be patient with this kid because if/when he puts it together he could have a Blake Wheeler type package. I'd pump him some 1st line PP minutes and either 3rd line minutes with Strome, or try the McDavid-Drai-RNH 3 lines once Slepyshev's back. Hope he gets a few looks on McDavid's wing this season as well as he's looked good there in a very limited sample size.

Just a glimpse of this kid's potential when he puts it all together. I think people forget how Granlund and Barkov looked like in their first NHL seasons.

Wow what a shot. Laine like.

Jesse earned himself an extra large little caesar's pizza tonight with that bomb. Woof.

Many people forget how Barkov and Granlund looked in their first NHL seasons. Jesse will be fine, the kid can skate, and as we can see, he can obviously shoot the puck. It's one win, and maybe they can build on it. There is still Dec, Jan, Feb, and March of games. But yeh suddenly it is more quiet in this thread than earlier today. lol

Eh you're going to get the constant "bust" and "magnus paajarvi 2.0" crowd in here whenever he struggles. I think he's already made huge improvements on last year, and while he still has a ways to go to reach his potential, its really starting to shine. At worst he's still an NHL quality player right now because when he's fighting it on the offensive side, he still plays a very strong defensive game. Very impressed with his defensive game at such a young age.

I think his defensive game has really improved a lot. While I don't know if it's really what the coach would like to see, but Pulju is often playing like a center in his own end. A lot of times he is the first guy back in the own zone, many times even before the second defenseman. He was all over the ice during the WJC in 2016 too, but back then it didn't seem like he put that much thought into it. Now he seems like he is thinking the defensive side of the game on a next level.

The whole talk about Pulju being a bust is really premature. I mean, he is a legitimate NHL player right now at 19. I really doubt he will go downhill from here.

Bust claims are ridiculous. It took Granlund until he was 24 to break out. I firmly believe he can become as good as Granlund in this league.

Have you seen the PLD thread compared to the Puljujarvi thread? PLD has been out playing him but it's always dead. Puljujarvi has a bad game and this thread goes through a couple pages

PLD outplaying Puljujärvi? Certainly not when it comes to point production.

Well he has earned Torts trust enough to center Panarin and Anderson. Also his TOI has been steadily increasing to last night where he played over 19 minutes in pretty much every scenario. While playing center. He only trailed Werenski, Jones and Panarin in TOI.
He should have has another goal last night if not for some goaltending heroics by Smith and his Dman.

Can the same be said about Puljujarvi?

Also different type of players, Pulju has the physical tools which Granlund does not but his hockey IQ is not near Granlund or Barkov. This is why some people are a little worried.

He actually shoot harder than Laine in some promotional skills competition before the 2016 wjc. Might be different in game situations with limited time and space tho. Accuracy wise Laine's shot is much better nevertheless, but hopefully Pulju can develop his shooting accuracy. He could potentially become a "do it all" kinda guy, since I think his biggest strength offensively (besides his size, compete level and skating) is his vision. I don't think he has superstar potential, more like someone who can consistently score between 50-60 per season while being great defensively. That's still very valuable for any team.

Puljujarvi alternates between bursts of great skill/puck handling and completely tripping over himself. He often gets handcuffed like he's not used to his own size or something. But, overall he's getting better.

I've talked about his coordination issues for a year+ now, he has that awkward look.

He's a prospect that will take a bit longer to show his true potential due to getting used to his frame.

I think he is still very raw. That would explain his inconsistensity as well his overall awkward stature. Kinda similar to young Scheifele in that regard, he often looks like a "bambi" on the ice.

Puljujarvi has been one of the best wingers on the Oilers since his call up (not hard given their poor wingers I know) but for whatever reason Todd refuses to give him a chance with McDavid and is married to Letestu on the PP when Jesse should have been tried in his spot long ago.

I don't know about earning a coaches trust, but he certainly could have more production than he does. He should have received an assist on one of the goals last night, but didn't despite touching the puck, and he had one taken away on a coaches challenge on a fairly soft goalie interference call. Also beat Lundqvist clean five hole, but because of where he shot the puck from it hit the far side post and stayed out. I haven't watched PLD so I won't comment on his play, but Jesse has had some solid play in his call up.

Really not something uncommon for guys who grow a lot in a short period of time. I seem to recall a report that Jesse grew something like 3 or 4 inches when he was 15 or 16 in less than a year. Those types of growth spurts can take years for motor development to adjust to, people as tall as Jesse often take time to regain their coordination on land, let alone on a much smaller base of support on skate blades.

Imo thats one of the biggest reasons people should be patient with him is because he needs a chance to grow into his body, not only in terms of filling it out, but in terms of motor control. He also has a massive wingspan which probably only further adds to his coordination problems. The good thing is that these type of individuals eventually do adapt to the size of their body and learn how to properly utilize it.

Winger Olli Jokinen? I mean, they even look alike.
