How many of them have put up the kind of season that Garland has? His improvement over last year is astronomical.

While it is the question is is it legit or luck. His cohort success rate including size and scoring across both his draft year and this season only gives him a 13% chance of success

Really good start to the year with 6 points in 2 games. How has he looked and did anyone catch him at training camp?

Played a terrific game yesterday afternoon in Charlottetown. One goal , three helpers and the game's first star and made it look easy. He said he was told (by Arizona brass) to come back and improve his strength and 200 foot game. I would love to see him make the World Juniors too.

I know I stated before the draft I didn't think he was an NHler (and was right about not thinking he was worth a draft pick as he went undrafted, so check mate almost everyone) and I stick by this.

He is great in juniors, but he will never make it in the NHL. He doesn't have the size, the speed, or the pure offensive skill to actually stick with a roster.

He reminds me of a undersized guy who does everything good, but nothing exceptional. Dominating the QMJHL at 19 (and 18 to be fair) is great, but lets remember the competition he is facing. Teenagers.

When the going gets tough, he will get out muscled to every puck, he won't be fast enough to avoid getting hit and stripped of the puck, his hope is to be a guy who is in the right place at the right time and score some dirty goals. This is not a core piece, he is a guy who can bounce from team to team and fill depth spots if he ever makes it that far.

The difference between him and Marner/Godtreau, is that they have the high end skill and speed. They have multiple elite parts of their game.

I don't see that in Garland.

That post is pretty funny. Garland dominates against teenagers, yes, but he isn't 29 years old. He is a teenager too, you know. Marner hasn't dominated anything else othan than teenagers either.

He doesn't have the speed? OK, his game is based around speed. He is so shifty, agile and fast out there it's sickening. He flies on the ice. He can wheel and turn with the puck on his stick so fast only a handful of D in this league can even dream of following him. Why do you think he posted such great numbers?

Garland has elite speed, agility, hands, playmaking and vision. He is really underrated because of his size. I am not saying he will make the NHL 100%, but a guy with his skillset, someone HAS to take a gamble on him. I am really surprised that ARZ didn't sign him up after camp.

This is a guy who used to hang in there with Eichel every year, up until their draft year. The reason? One has NHL size, the other is 5'7. But a lot of Boston scouts will tell you Garland and Eichel were always neck and neck when they were growing up. And it's not like Garland has regressed. His only weakness is size. If that doesn't scream Gaudreau/Johnson/St.Louis to you, I don't know what will.

I would love to see him get 100 assists this year, but it's unlikely considering he'll probably miss a chunk of time at the WJC. But 5 apples in 2 games is an impressive start towards that end. When is the last time a CHL player picked up 100 assists?

Ignoring many things that were wrong in this post (his ability and playmaking are elite), Garland WAS drafted this past draft, so I have no idea what you're talking about.

I don't think there's a big rush to get that done from either side, is there? They did draft him, so they do own his rights.

I got messed up in my head because the previous poster said he went undrafted.

You are right, ARZ did draft him and I think it is a gamble that will pay off. Good job. You guys are starting to have some great young talent up front; Strome, Domi, Duclair, Perlini, Dvorak, Merkley, Rieder and Garland.

Yeah, all he had to do was read the title of the thread and he would see that he was drafted. It's pretty embarrassing to come in all high and mighty about that and actually be wrong about it.

Jonny Gaudreau.

Garland will be a steal.

This kid must have insane cardio or something, watched him today in Cape Breton and he legitimately had a few 3+ minute shifts.

Always dangerous though, makes plays happen from what seems like nothing.

That's the biggest thing I dislike about his game and it no doubt helps inflate his numbers. Nothing a good coach at the next level can't fix though.

He was hurt in a fight tonight. Hopefully he is fine and it is not too serious, he was dominating for Moncton since his return.

What on earth are you talking about.

Reminds me A LOT of David Desharnais when he was in the Q.

Does everything well, but doesn<t have that top end speed smallish players usually have.

BUT, if a 5th round pick can turn out as a 50pts wingers a la Desharnais, he will be considered as a steal!

Remove names and this could be a copy/pasta.

Just a brutal, brutal thing to happen. Why in the world did Garland drop the gloves in a game where he had a hat trick? To finish the Gordie Howe? Sigh. Hope he's doing okay.

I know his coach wanted to fight the other team,s coach.....thought that it was provoked by the other team. Though the guy that fought him is not a big guy and not a fighter either. But true....you are one of the best player in the league....you just go away from that.

His Estimated Points/60 is the highest in the Q last year and so far this year. His TOI/G was 25th (Barbashev had more ETOI/G) while he led the league in points and was second in PPG (to Ehlers) last year.

If I could find stats about zone starts I think that would be more useful. Certainly he gets more points because he has more time to create them, but I'm not sure his TOI/G is inflating his numbers, more like he's good enough to warrant getting a high TOI/G.

That injury looked really bad. Hopefully he recovers fully and quickly.
