Really hard not to think there's an obvious Quebec bias in the QMJHL when Garland doesn't win MVP with the season he just had.

Garland: 128pts
Next closest teammates: 65, 64, 50

Perron (MVP): 108pts
Next closest teammates: 82, 67, 51 (in 29 games)

You tell me who seems more valuable? Something fishy going on here if you ask me, but that's par for the course in a league that blatantly favors the French teams. Can't have back to back English MVP!

His second part of the season probably cost him the award. And being a MVP isn't just about points.

He disappears when it gets tough.

His playoffs performance is just proving it once again.

Curious, is he actually playing poorly? He is still the leading scorer on the team and is a ppg pace (which is really low for him but it is the playoffs).

Obviously teams plan around stopping Garland, especially in the playoffs.

From what I've seen last year, Quebec's plan wasn't to stop him. He just fell apart.

I only watched yesterday's game between Moncton and Gatineau and he was pretty much a non factor.

Most of the league's top players in the past have had no problems producing as much in the playoffs. It's not like Garland is the first nor the last top player to be closely watched in the playoffs.

6 pts & -14 in 35 games. Tough start to his pro career.

I'm guessing without watching any games that his deficiencies are getting exposed badly at the pro level.

Looks like he won't amount to anything after all - still can't blame the Yotes for taking a swing in the 5th round. No harm in that

I have seen him a few times. He's been feisty and had a few good looks. Just not playing on a top line and needs to figure out finishing at that level. I think it's more about how tough the AHL is for young players, it's more the exception that they progress well and have an impact quickly than should be the expectation. Garland is just on a longer development curve, that's all.

How has his defensive positioning been?

That was my biggest criticism of him when I watched him play in junior in his final year. I felt it was non-existent at times in junior. He would do anything to score a goal but would rarely do the little things in the defensive end. I felt that and his size would be a massive barrier in his pro career.

As a guy who got to watch Garland a ton during his time here (I can see the coliseum from my house and seen him live many times), he is going to have trouble immediately adapting. The reason, he's got a certain style he used in Junior that's not going to work in the NHL/AHL.

He's got the best "edges" I've ever seen in a skater, turns on a dime. He would always skate towards the corner with a dman on his tail, and turn towards the blueline, shaking the dman.....then turn again, shaking the dman once more......he would then cut horizontally towards the net wide open and shoot. It seems like it was the only play he knew, but was a master at it. Works against teenagers, not against grown men

I'm personally not sure he's going to adapt and find his game, but he was still worth the gamble imo

I wasn't watching him that closely, so can't really tell you. I don't think his defensive play left an impression on me either way. I saw him some with Moncton too so I know he was a guy who was allowed to do pretty much whatever he wanted.

He has been playing in the bottom six, sometimes even the 4th line, so the complete lack of production isn't on him. It's pretty clear the staff in Tucson expect him to learn to play away from the puck in order to earn time higher up in the lineup.

Just because he doesn't light it up in his first year in the AHL doesn't mean he's not going to amount to anything.

The perfect example of why people get unrealistic expectations from Junior stats and need to actually watch someone play first. Anyone who saw Garland play knew he had a long road to the NHL.

5th rd picks are hit and more likely misses. I recall the Garland vs Timashov(who is also struggling in the AHL) thread where there were some high expectations for both. The reality is, only a few drafted this late make it. I don't know what to expect from Garland. Whether he will buck the odds, or who knows he may be Swiss bound one day.

As many people in this thread suggested, he needed some time to adapt but it looks like he's on his way to a vastly more productive season offensively this year so far. Begs the questions whether he has NHL upside or not. 3 goals and 8 assists for 11 points through 7 games. Has anyone been following him who can comment on his development?

I wasn't sure he could make it to the show after his first 2 AHL seasons, but congrats on this "smurf" for yet again proving a lot of people wrong. Two games so far this past week in the NHL...not bad for an undersized 5th round pick...

7 pts in his last 8 GP (5G, 2A). 7 shots against NYR tonight.

Didn’t think he had what it took to play at the NHL level but he has been good.

He definitely evolved his game in the AHL.
I didn't ever see him play in the Q but most comments on hf described a selfish pond hockey style of play.

Now he's all hustle.
