He wasn't getting a top 6 spot and can't play in the bottom 6. I love the kid and he did get snubbed for last year's weaker team, but he simply doesn't make this top 6 . Matthews, Tkachuk, and Roslovic have chemistry and likely form our second line. Milano, Dvorack, and Tuch form the other line...how does Garland fit? DeBrincat plays gritty and can play on that third line and not be a liability, same cant be said for Garland.

I feel bad for the kid and he does deserve an invite but simply no room on this stacked offense for him. Bracco isn't getting invited an likely same with Keller and Yamamoto who both have more skill than Garland. Only so many spots for so many names.

For their age, but right now Garland is clearly more skilled than either. I would go as far as to say Garland has the most pure skill in the entire CHL

1) Roslovic and Tuch got cut
2) Why couldn't he play bottom 6? Second bold part doesn't make sense to me. You don't need to be gritty to play on a 3rd line?

I also agree with poster above regarding Garland's junior skill

I think not inviting Garland sends a message to all American players that the selection process is totally arbitrary. It's not as merit based as it should be.

3rd line used to be the checking line and some people are stuck in the past.

Love when a WHL'er gets represented, but I don't understand how Garland isn't the better add over Easnor. Unless of course, they have their top 6 set, and didn't want to remove him from his team.

Good for my country, bad for hockey.

2/6 of your super top 6 not invited. :sarcasm:

Very undersized
Overager this draft
Doesn't play defence at all
There's a fear that his game likely won't translate into the NHL

This is spot on.

I just saw him play in Saint John last weekend. He is a massive cherry picker. He gets so many points because he floats around waiting for his teammates to feed him. There is no effort in his game.

Defence is nonexistant. Whenever he coughs up the puck, he gets burnt. He nearly gave up a shorty off a breakaway.

He is not going to have an extensive NHL career. He would be benched in seconds for his style of play, and in more intense and physical play, he would not have near the amount of opportunities he does in the Q.

Watch Marner, Barzal, Point or Strome. Maybe the most in the Q.

Those players have way, way more NHL potential, but at this point in time, against Junior competition Garland is simply a better offensive player than those guys. He plays with no one and has turned Askew from a no name player into an over ppg C.

Would love to see team USA struggle to score offensively in this tournament.

Two of those 6 got cut so there goes your entire point already. Secondly the third line is today's Hockey is rarely ever a pure "checking line". Thirdly Garland runs a power play better than anyone on team USA's potential roster and lastly at this current point in time Garland is the best pure offensive player in the CHL.

How is it spot on? Undersized doesn't matter when he's dominating his peers in the QMJHL. Not much more of a difference in world junior (avg. height/weight probably a little higher). Being drafted a year later means nothing to this process. Not great at defence? Sure, not a defensive forward by any means, but he's the best offensive forward in the league. Play him heavily on the PP if they're that concerned about his defensive play. Floats around waiting for his teammates to feed him? LOL. I mean I've seen him play many times and that's ridiculous. How would he have 69 points in 28 games, while his next closest teammate has 39 points in more games played. You're acting like he won't go into his own defensive zone or a corner to get the puck himself once in a full game. Amazing that he doesn't seem to do anything but float and can lead the CHL by like 15 points and be like +10 above his 2nd best forward teammate in +/-. Not having an extensive pro career is also completely irrelevant.

Who cares about his NHL potential but the Coyotes fan? This is the WJC we're talking about and he's dominating his peers at the junior level.

He should have gotten at least an invite. Theres literally not much else he could have done this year to make the team. I guess they think Debrincat is better than him, but i mean you could test that out. Scott Eansor is 5'9 and not even a PPG as a 19 year old in the WHL. Is his dad one of the coaches?

yep, 2 of the 6 got cut, pretty crazy...tells you just what they think of Garland. He didn't perform well at summer camp, and they don't think he can fill a bottom 6 role. And yes USA Hockey still believes in players to fill their bottom 6 who can play some defense which Garland does not.

My point still stands as I said Keller and DeBrincat are better than Garland, and the both are here. Not sure what roles they play but there simply was no room for Garland in USA Hockeys eyes. My eyes have been different and I find it funny to see anyone talk as if I am not a fan of his. I have been a huge fan of his and outraged when he got snubbed last year...but they are bringing smaller skill in Keller and DeBrincat that I feel are better overall players and will fit better into roles that Ron Wilson will define.

I am 1000 times more upset at Connor and Roslovic not here over Garland to be honest. If USA fails, they wont have to look far as to why when leaving off as much skill as they did.

IMO the USA WJC selection committee is a joke. How you can't invite a guy who is the best offensive player in the entire CHL just doesn't make any sense to me.

A lot of Americans would agree with you. Not even an invite is pure stupidity.

DeBrincat and Keller have much better NHL potential, but no, at this point in time in a Junior tournament a 19 year old Garland is better than those 17 years olds (and everyone in the CHL).

Garland plays with a guy who had 43pts last year (undrafted), and a no name 19 year old Euro (undrafted). DeBrincat plays with Mitch Marner, who IMO is the only current CHL player who can give Garland a run for his money when it comes to an offensive game at the CHL level. A guy like Garland is without a doubt a HUGE advantage to have on the PP.

I think you've confused Marner and Strome. Marner plays for London and DeBrincat and Strome for Erie.

as I said, I am not against Garland one ounce and I feel his ass should be at camp...just trying to give perspective to what team USA does...they do this crap every year. The list that I can compile over the past 8 years could make anyone throw up over snubs. Hell, they even snubbed Jack Johnson for the love of God.

It is my opinion that DeBrincat and Keller are better, right now. Draft position isn't a tell all, but Garland did get passed over in his first year of eligibility and did not go as high as I had hoped last year..In contrast, DeBrincat can go inside the top 15 this year and Keller, well this kid can go inside the top 10 if a team sees the light. Debrincat is a sniper, and plays with grit. What he is doing at the OHL almost 2 years younger than Garland is ridiculous.

Keller is just amazing. Has been for years and now he is finally getting his due. I like both over Garland right now and nothing will change that view. USA Hockey feels the same. Garland plays little to no defense and honestly has been double and triple shifted more times than I can ever remember..USA Hockey likely got scared by that knowing this kid is used to a certain amount of ice time and role currently..if he didn't get that role would he just vanish or have such a hard time adjusting? I don't really know and we never will, but there are concerns over Garland and have been for years.

DeBrincat and Keller are small skilled players like Garland, but both kids will get picked inside the top 30 and possibly much higher..that does show a lot to just how good they are and what they are doing at younger ages than Garland. Garland is a great player and I hope he makes the show, but I can live without him on this team knowing Keller and DeBrincat are here. I just feel they will handle the role better...and yes I have seen all three kids play, no agenda or bias here.

Garland plays with Askew who was not some scrub 17 year old...kid was one of the most touted and hyped Americans in his birth year. He came on slow last year, similar to Garland in his first season in the Q...tough league to adjust for most US kids...now Askew looks like a player again and I am sure Garland has a lot to do with it but Askew was something and many of us followed him for years.

I also love Yan out of the Q as well, he has another year to make a case for this team again next year.

Yes my mistake  I was reading the Marner thread before this so that must have been on my mind.
