Ugh..this thread got smelly real quick. FYI no one wants to be like the Leafs LOL

Backstrom is a lazy comparison and makes it easy to weed out who’s unfamiliar with EP.

How did No Show Nylander aka Radim Vrbata Jr. even get dragged into this ? Elias is a certified champion and has his own style.

Not saying he or his style is the best, just saying it’s unique and there’s no good comparison.

His play style is AI Machine Learning
Pastrnak is the better comparison I can come up with, but with a lesser slapper and even then, the comparison is not accurate.

Pettersson is a natural center, played that position his entire junior career. Nylander is not, neither can he play center in the NHL. His work rate is way too much up and down and he doesn't have the understanding of how to play that position.
Nylander was drafted a center, played it in the SHL, AHL and first 22 games of the NHL. Just because the Leafs are stacked down the middle shouldn't be held as a slight towards Nylander, he'd be a center on a team with weaker depth down the middle, heck EP wouldn't even be a center on the Leafs.

Yeah Pettersson is a natural in middle, he just keeps on impressing.

And Nylander cant play center in the NHL? Weird as how he did it last season, how can Babcook put a guy like him in the middle if he doesnt understand how to play the position.

You can get away with playing Nylander at center maybe 50% of the time if you surround him with good players. Same can probably be said about the likes of Marner, Kane and other similar wingers. Won't be worth it in the longer run and in the playoffs it would get really ugly. Nylander just doesn't understand how to play that position properly, especially without the puck. His effort level is also very much up and down, at times it's flat out unacceptable.

I've always liked Nylander but he is a winger. He does all of his damage from the perimeter and that's fine.

No. Nylander didn't play a game at center in his draft year, not the year before that either. I don't even think he played much center in the Swedish U18 league. Always on the wing with the national teams as well except for his last WJC where he only played half a period.

Well I dont agree, think he is a better player in the middle. But we can agree to disagree about that, now back to topic. :D

He was listed as a C/LW at the draft, played center in the SHL in his d+1, played center in his first full season in the AHL and his first 22 games in the NHL. As a Leafs fan who has followed his development for the past 3 years, he was developed as a center when the Leafs drafted him, it was only until the Leafs were too stacked up the middle when he was shifted over to wing.

So yea he’s a winger, what was your initial point? Who cares if he was listed as a C/LW at the draft. It’s clear he has become a LW now, considering he has played most of his NHL career on the wing.

Honestly I don’t know why you became so defensive. No one is discounting Nylanders talent... most people here are just predicting that Petterson will have higher potential then him. I mean it would be sad if the Canucks best prospect has a lower ceiling then your what... fourth best forward right?

I said EP had higher potential than Nylander countless times, it's just that that some posters in this thread are very selective in regards to what they retain when they read and what they don't lol.

Good grief. This thread has been both enjoyable and painful to read for various reasons. Elias Pettersson has one NHL game under his belt.

I'm as excited as anyone about him and I'm confident he's going to be a hell of a player. But saying stuff like Nylander "isn't even on the same planet" as him, when Nylander has had back to back 60 point seasons is, at this stage, absolute nonsense.

EP has huge potential, and if we were judging them based on that he'd be clearly in front. But let's pump the brakes for a second and see how he copes with the challenges of an exhausting full NHL schedule before we start claiming him to be the second coming of Christ.

Oh god here we go again.
Some players are simply elite from before they hit the NHL, you don't always need to see them in the NHL to just realize that.

All the generational players are like this (mcdavid, crosby, malkin, etc).

Then there are players in the next tier who are superstars who you were automatic studs before they played a simple game in the NHL, (aka Tavares, matthews, Laine, etc)

EP is in the same mold as Datsyuk (style of play and hype), His hype is warranted, he broke every record in sweden, he had a great preseason 2 follow, and a great first game.

Saying he is better than Nylander by a large margin is completely fair.

Not to mention, Elias is a two way beast, something that he is vastly better than nylander at already at his age group. It's scary how good he is away with the puck.

Now for the love of god, can you or somebody make a Poll on hf boards to talk about this, Because this thread is already filled with enough of this crap

No, it isn't. Not right now anyway.

If we were judging them on potential alone then EP is clearly the winner. Great shot, passes brilliantly, high IQ and incredibly skilled with previous success in Sweden. But it doesn't always translate. Nylander is a proven entity at the NHL level and if EP put up the same stats as him as a rookie I'd be delighted. Until he proves he can produce on a consistent basis in the NHL and cope with the physical demands of a draining season then all it is is hype though.

As a fanbase we've been starved of any significant talent until Boeser and Pettersson came along, so excitement is natural and to be expected. Overexaggerated (bordering on the unrealistic) nonsense such as the above is not.

Dude, one, no one cares, but also two, calling a player who plays on the wing a winger is not a “slight” lmao. It’s a position, not a value judgement. I’d say you’re the only one actually insulting him by implying otherwise.

EP wouldn't be a center on the Leafs, on the Nucks he is, ditto with Nylander. Seguin played wing in his first few years in Boston, gets traded to Dallas who was weaker up the middle and he gets moved over to center. Only morons would take a guy who is listed as a C/LW and just assume he's a full time winger. Nylander takes FO's and is over 50% at them as well. And you obviously care, since you responded, but keep doing your thing, it's obviously working

If Pettersson only scores 61 points it would be a huge disappointment

No it absolutely would not!

Anyone who is a fan of another team I feel the need to apologize on behalf of Canuck nation we are not all like this.

My fellow Canucks fans please pay attention, it has been ONE f***ING GAME! One, no he hasn't proven more than Nylander let alone being worth more either, Nylander in his rookie season had 61 points, we would be extremely lucky if Pettersson did that and no it's not a guarantee as some of you think. I think he will be a very good player in this league, but he still has to prove it.

This is really ridiculous and is only going to put unfair pressure on the kid and make us as a fanbase look delusional and ignorant. Stop.

Thank you, at least there's one level-headed fan. I'm a huge fan of EP and think he's got more potential than Nylander but like with all prospects, he needs to prove it before being declared anything. I think he's got 1C potential, whether he reaches that or no is to be seen, and definitely not after 1 game.

A player like Elias has talents that would make him a top offensive player. That means PPG minimum. Holding him accountable to his own abilities is not too much pressure, it’s the exact right amount of pressure.

Seeing as how this thread is wayyyyy past the 40 page limit and Pettersson is easily the best player on the Canucks right now, perhaps we can conclude he's no longer a prospect and close this thread.

Just spitballing here.

Its funny with Vancouver that in these rebuild years they are in now; at the draft they reach a bit compared to consensus, if I remember it correctly both Virtanen and Pettersson was picked a little earlier than thought. But for polar reasons, they picked Virtanen as a reaction on some perceived need for grit and strength with all these years with the Sedins. But then a couple of years later they instead saw that kind of traits as secondary, and picked a skilled and promosing, but skinny Euro.

I know Pettersson will succeed, and Virtanen is very likely to have his best season now and establish himself as a NHLer. So now they got both grit and skill.

Only one rookie has put up 80+ points over a full season since Malkin did in 2006, and you're expecting EP to accomplish that as a bare minimum?

Shut up.
