this is my favorite video of this kid. seems like a bull (not sure why it says "nikolai dergachyov")...

I don't agree with the Brian Boyle comparison. Dergachyev is much more of a playmaker than Boyle will ever be. Boyle sometimes has tunnel vision and dumps in it when clearly there is a pass to be made.

Getzlaf is pushing it as well, Dergachyev does not have that kind of upside.

It is hard to find a good comparison for him. He does remind me of Nichushkin of the Stars. Dergachyev has similar size, skating, ability to play the boards and power past defenders. He does not have Nichushkin's release, but I think his release is better than most think. His goal at the WJC was actually on a pretty quick release. His playmaking is on par, if not slightly better, than Nichushkin's.

I believe that in his prime Dergachyev can be a very good #2 Center in the NHL who puts up about 20G, 35A and plays PP and PK. He is a very complete package...and can only improve.

Not quite the sheer burst of speed that Nichushkin has, but definitely better hands - a really clever and gifted puckhandler who has a laser-precise wrist shot. I would like to see him stay in the KHL for at least another 2 years, but my guess is he will go high. IMO, clearly the best Russian forward who is eligible for the NHL draft this year.

Backes maybe?

Backes has similar size and power, but IMO, he lacks the hands, stickhandling ability, wrist shot and sheer scoring threat that Dergachev represents. Dergachev has the size and toughness, but also has great finesse and scoring touch.

He's a 1st rounder in my estimation.

At worst, he's an Artem Anisimov - at worst!

Anisimov is limited to defense only. He has no offensive upside, while Dergachev plays excellent defense, but is a scoring threat every shift on the ice at the junior level. Anisimov wasn't nearly as good as Dergachev as a junior, and my problem with Anisimov is his passivity. He plays with no emotion or toughness, whereas Dergachev's passion is always on display (see the video featuring the battle with Darnell Nurse). IMO, no comparison at all with Anisimov.

I like this player quite a bit, if I had an extra one or an extra high two, I'd take a shot on this player and hope that the skills become more refined. You can sense that he takes a lot of pride in his defensive assignments too, he looks like he really cares about the game. And you can see it in particular in that one video above, his board play is so far beyond his years, it's absurd...

How does Dergachyov compare to Kamenev from last year?

Dergachev was a force throughout the U20 last year, whereas its hard to even remember that Kamenev was actually on the team. My guess is that the scouts rank Dergachev far ahead of Kamenev!

Nurse was wearing the "C", is that right? And was trying hard to show he's "already there"(in the NHL. well in fact one of the top D prospects). Will be fun to see them meet again in the NHL.

No offense but Backes is a 30 goal scorer. If 30 goals isn't a scoring threat then I don't know what is?

I think Backes is probably Dergachyov upside. Backes is a 30/30 guy who play Selke caliber defense against the NHLs best, records around 200+ hits every year and is a 51%+ in face offs.

This is the thing that drives me crazy about this board sometimes, people act like every prospect is a lock to be as good as a "Backes" type player, yet VERY, VERY FEW even come close.

Let's pump the brakes a little, if he come anywhere close to Backes, it will be a huge win for some team. To think he will be better than him, he would be going in the top 5-7 picks. Let's be realistic here folks.

3:58 for a clearer picture of his board work. Gives me chills...

I like that video too - textbook body usage there.

By the way, very often I hear talks about his skating issues, and, while his skating is obviously not his best asset, are those issues that big? For example, back in March I posted video with his cost-to-coast goal and his skating technique and ability looked fine (at least, considering his size) to me there:

Couple of days ago Dergachyov scored a very nice goal in a MHL playoff game against HC MVD: went coast-to-coast and scored on a wrap around (at 2:11 of the highlight video below):

...

For a guy his size I think his skating is very good actually.

Yes, he doesn't skate like Malkin, but who does?

I would say he is more agile and a better skater than Anisimov for example. His skating is close to Nichushkin's in my mind, which is pretty damn good. Big players take longer to develop...and I think his skating can still improve over time.

Not for me. When he gets up to top speed, he could go through brick walls if wanted to.

I think he'll need to work on his acceleration a bit, but he's not the first player who needs to improve aspects of his skating. He'll fit better on smaller ice for sure.

I see this kid as a very effective bottom 6 player in the NHL. Would be a great asset for any organization.

So, do I understand correctly that at 226 lbs Dergachyov is the biggest guy in at least top two rounds? Or am I forgetting someone else?

Chills? He didn't accomplish anything. Yeah, he stayed standing up, but clearly he doesn't have the edge work or hands to make an actual move.

I don't think this guy ever makes the NHL. At least not a longstanding career.
