If he were Canadian, he'd go early in the second. Maybe even crack the 1st (28-30 range). As a Russian, he'll go mid-late second.

I figured he'd be a 2nd round pick. I was hoping him being Russian would be drop him to the 3rd round.

Leafs don't have a 2nd :(

Is he a risk to get over? Hoping for some further insight beyond what i've read which I know is tough.

He's huge and uses his size to protect the puck and he has great hands, his board work is nothing short of amazing. He's very impressive to watch, he looks like he could already play in the big leagues with his high IQ and pro sized frame. He'll need to work on his skating, but that's nothing unusual for a player of his stature. Like others have said, if he was North American, he'd probably go late 1rst but it's always unknown with these Russians. He's really powerful and he works hard and he's extremely fun to watch. He even kills penalties.

Watch this video if you want a good idea of how he plays and how his game could translate to the NHL rather easily IMO.

Not sure if it works, if not here's the link:

Another first round talent that will fall due to the Russian factor is Dennis Guryanov, he is a top 15 talent and ha great size and speed.

Maybe a first rounder if he is a North American.

Big frame, lots of skills and able to play in the D zone so well. Read the play and gritty at his time.

The russian factor.................

Thanks so much for this.

Do you think he projects as a centre or wing at the NHL level?

Will it be hard to bring him over?

I think he will most definitely be a centre, he's more of a pass first guy. Notice how he always uses his body and is very hard to knock off the puck, and things happen all the time when he's on the ice, he reminds me of a guy like Getslaf. He finishes his checks, got real good hands too and as you can see he's excellent at cycling the puck. Of course, it's unknown if he will reach to that potential but stylistically they play a similar game. It's always hard to say for projections, but with his size, work ethic and sense of responsability, I think he will adapt rather quickly. With him, it's mostly a question of how much he could produce in the NHL. He could be anywhere from a 3rd line checking centre to a 2nd line or even 1b) type centre. I don't see him pulling all the strings to be as dominant as Getslaf but the potential is there.

Unforunately, I have no idea how hard it would be to bring him over. He could fall quite a bit because of that, and also the fact that there is many other great players from 30-60 this year will not help him because teams might want to go with safer bets since the quality of players in that range is still very good. If he's willing to come to NA, a team will be rewarded for taking him. His contract in the KHL finishes in 2016. A factor that could help is that the Russian economy is very poor, so we're maybe going to see more Russians explore their options.

Could be a David Backes type player then who could slot on the wing. If I was a team with two first rounders or traded back to later in the first round then I could see him being targeted around 25-30. Higher up there are players with higher offensive upside but his game is suited well for the NHL playoffs imo, my opinion on him has slightly changed.

Backes is a good example of what type of player he could become, I was trying to find a good comparison but it's always hard to do, but I think Backes is more realistic than Getslaf when talking about potential. I think you've got the player I was searching for!

Dergachyov became the best goalscorer of MHL play-offs with 11 goals in 19 games.

From all the games I've seen him in I'm constantly reminded of Brian Boyle. The pk skills, the board play, the heavy shot. Seems like a great player to have on any team.

He and Gauthier
Would be a crazy cycle duo

One of the players I'm hoping the Sharks can pick up at #39. His board game looks a lot like Hertl's, big body who can cycle and protect the puck down low.

I like him. Great size, decently physical, pretty nice hands, strong defensively. I do worry about his skating/quickness though (powerful stride, OK speed once he gets going, but just not quick/agile), and the slow release on his shot. Reminds me of Gauthier, who went 21st overall, but probably should have gone lower. Also reminds me of Brian Boyle, who was a decent pick at 26th overall in his draft year. With the Russian factor, I think he's probably a 2nd rounder, not a 1st rounder like Gauthier/Boyle. I think he's got upside in the 2C/3C range, but could easily be more of a 4C too.

According to the Draft Combine thread, Dergachyov was measured at 6'4" and 226lbs - what a beast! :amazed:

...

I don't agree with the Brian Boyle comparison. Dergachyev is much more of a playmaker than Boyle will ever be. Boyle sometimes has tunnel vision and dumps in it when clearly there is a pass to be made.

Getzlaf is pushing it as well, Dergachyev does not have that kind of upside.

It is hard to find a good comparison for him. He does remind me of Nichushkin of the Stars. Dergachyev has similar size, skating, ability to play the boards and power past defenders. He does not have Nichushkin's release, but I think his release is better than most think. His goal at the WJC was actually on a pretty quick release. His playmaking is on par, if not slightly better, than Nichushkin's.

I believe that in his prime Dergachyev can be a very good #2 Center in the NHL who puts up about 20G, 35A and plays PP and PK. He is a very complete package...and can only improve.

Backes maybe?

I don't think he'll pump out as much offense as Backes. I think Jordan Staal is a good comparison.

I think Backes is more physical and less of a playmaker(with better shot). So i dont think their styles are similar.

Jordan Staal is not a bad comparison. But i think the Russian has a bit more finese and playmaking to his game.

I would really doubt the playmaking part, Dergachyov doesn't look like a good playmaker to me, that's why I think that he has more potential to be a winger than center.

...

Anisimov is not a bad comparison!

I think Dergachyov is a slightly better passer and might have a better shot too...but the size and skating and style of play is similar.

Wouldn't be the slightest bit upset if the Leafs reach to take him at 24

We don't have a player like him in our system.

He and Gauthier

They would wear a team down.

I think he is going to be a very good player.

I've made several shift by shift videos this past season, one of which was of Alexander Dergachyev. Enjoy!
