IDK if it was discussed before, but I'm betting my left pinky that conditioned pick is safety net for Carolina, if Lokti bolts to KHL after season. Remember, he's RFA, so they could be counting on resigning him for cheap. We send them pick if he opts to go after money ...
This pretty much explains why Lou doesn't want it disclosed.

But why is it in 2017, after Ruutu's contract runs out? Not saying it can't be related to Lokti, but why 2017 in that case?

Ryder is not a left winger. We know from Kovalchuk that they don't want to use a guy on his off wing.

If the Devils want to add a wing or two in the offseason you'll likely see Ryder and or Brunner traded. For the rest of the year I think you'll have

Ruutu-Zajac-Jagr
Henrique-Elias-Ryder
Clowe-Zubrus-Brunner

Lou has wanted to add a LW to ZJ and I think Ruutu at least gets a shot at it.

there could be a myriad of reasons why Carolina let him go. are you saying valuable players don't get moved on deadline day?

and you don't think ruutu isn't going to help get us into the playoffs. so he's going to hinder us? will that possible (POSSIBLE) 3rd rounder help us get into the playoffs? how about loki? you say you want short term success with a long term rebuild, with draft picks? that isn't going to happen either

no i dont think ruutu is going to help us get to the playoffs. BUUUUUUUT i dont think he is going to hurt our chances of getting into the playoffs either. thats how lowly i think of the guy. the same goes with loki. its a wash of meaningless 3rd liners on a team filled with 3rd liners. so if we make the playoffs dont go pointing to this trade as the reason why (unless ruutu scores 30 points in the last 20 games). just like if we miss the playoffs dont go pointing to this trade as the reason why. its just a stupid meaningless trade that brings on another 3rd line role player at an insane contract who's in his 30's. at the cost of having a open roster spot at the end of the year that we could've filled differently when loki leaves the team.

i never want short term success. i never said that. i want long term success. making the playoffs isn't hard in this nhl and it shouldn't be the goal of the fans that making the playoffs mean the team had a successful year.

if the devils squeak into the playoffs everyone on here will be happy as hell because "we were picked to finish dead last" and we made it in as the 16th seed. yay! next year we can shoot for the 15th seed! yay!

Possible reasons Carolina traded Ruutu? H'mm let's see.

1)Bad contract
2)Oft injured
3)Slow
4)awful season, including worst +/- on the team?

Is that a full myriad?

I'll admit it, I'll be pretty happy if we make the playoffs.

Edit: If we make the playoffs while squeezing out the St. Louis Rangers? Stoked.

At this point we damn well better. Lou decided to go for it instead of adding younger assets for the future. Now we better get in and pray out defensive system beats up some teams and we make it a few rounds. With Schneider in net, who knows.

Lou didn't want to give up an immediate pick considering our draft situation the last couple years (no first rounder this year, traded last year). Besides the condition could just as easily apply to Ruutu's games played in that time frame or a number of other things.

This is a great summary of this trade.

We would be better off with waiving Lokti then trading him for Ruutu's contract. We fill our roster with mediocre players, instead of doing it the way succesful teams do it. 4-5 star players, 3-4 mediocre players and cheap players + prospects.

so we waste a buy out on him? instead of using it on a train or salvador thus creating that open slot for larrson to come in? good to know

Condition: If Devils win on Sat no third. If Canes win on Sat third.

That's a way to sell out a Sat against the Canes Lou

if you can figure out how to get 4-5 star players on the team, I am all ears!

we had 2. they both went home for the money

The only way this team is going to become successful again is to get aggressive in free agency (sign two players and overpay if necessary) and trade for another. The supporting cast is in place we just need the extra push.

I don't understand the problem people have with this trade. We gave up almost nothing and we'll still have cap room.

I posted what I would do this summer a few times.

throw money at Stastny, re-sign Jagr, extend Cory, buyout one of the slow ogres on D, sign a guy like Mason Raymond and away we go

It's tantamount to a little kid who was hoping for a BB gun for christmas but ended up getting a new pair of boots. Even if the boots are useful, he will throw a temper tantrum because he didn't get what he wanted.

People wanted Vanek or Moulson and they see Ruutu, so they will b**** no matter what.

Stars don't grow on trees. Best we can hope for is that we have some stars developing.

One in net. 2 or 3 on D. And one at F (Henrique). Hope to sign Stastny (Lou isn't going to pull a Cashman and sign the best 3 players in UFA. That's not what he does).

This team isn't in danger of being relegated to the AHL. We're fine right now.

Where can i sign? Add a Greene extension and maybe deal one of our D-prospects for a similar forward prospects and suddenly things look much better.

The Ruutu trade if anything indicates to me that Pete is going to be here for 2015 at least. I'm almost numb to the mismanagement and poor treatment of the younger players. I was invited by my ticket rep to meet management the other day, but I didn't feel like placing myself in such a stressful situation where you keep your mouth shut.

If he does it's because he has his eye on forwards further away from UFA (a year or two so he'll sign them to a deal like that) or he's counting on his young forwards (Boucher/Matteau) to be ready.

Lou just doesn't organize UFA by age and pick them that way. I'm sure his thought process is a lot more thorough.

Loktionov has 135 games (5 seasons) with a career PTS per game of .28 (.14 goals per game).

Ruutu has 606 games (10 season) with a career PTS per game of .53 (.23 goals per game).

Ruutu >>> Loki

I wont' be surprised at all if Ruutu puts up 20+ goals playing on our 1st line of Zajac and Jagr.

4 million cap hit over 2 years is NOT awful and has the chance to be EXTREMELY cheap if Ruutu can put up .50 PTS. Especially when you consider how hard he plays. He will never be the player that just disappears. If he isn't scoring goals he will still be noticeable.

2 years ago he played 72 games and put up 18 goals and 16 assists. That is worth 4+ million if the player plays average defense.

except its more like getting boots that are the exact same as the boots you have which don't even need to be replaced because they are perfectly fine.

i didn't want vanek or moulson.
