Some did stay on the ice, Ovechkin was one of those that did and was telling other players to stay out too.

When the initial exodus started a few did stay on the ice. I think they might have still been there when the trophy was presented, but by the time the anthem started they had all left.

I think much of the debate on whether it is right or wrong has a lot to do with the culture and era which each individual poster has learned from their environment... but obviously we are allowed to have different opinions or beliefs.

Unless the protocols are changed, I hope that the Canadian players would never be the trendsetters of disrespect towards traditions and other countries.

The Russian players could have been brought up in a different culture and must have a different morale compass than the rest of the International hockey world... is it wrong? No... but most Canadians don't like it and we are free to express it.

I was brought up to stand by my principals, do the right thing, honor tradition, fight for what you believe in and hold yourself accountable for your own actions.

The lack of respect and accountability in this world is why this world continues move in the direction it does.

Wise words and I especially like your first bolded sentence :) :handclap:

in terms of this .."issue".. I don't really care anymore. I agree we shouldn't over-analyze this, but to say nothing was wrong is obviously false. The excuses that it was too long anyway, or that they were not in "the mood", or whatever, are absolutely ludicrous and a definition of ridiculousness. But hey, let's forget about that finally. I think it's not doing anyone any good to keep it alive.

Nobody cares. And it wasn't the players' fault. No matter what your NA press tells you.

From the IIHF:

The sport's governing body, IIHF, said the Russian players deliberately left the ice before Canada's national anthem was played after a signal from captain Ilya Kovalchuk.

IIHF is based in Europe right? Kovy is a player, right?

Obviously someone cares no matter what your press tells you.

Not really, most Russians wouldn't give two craps about it.

Please realize you guys are insanely passionate hockey fans, and, thus, tend to make mountains out of molehills at times. Especially internationally when the sport can define people's sense of collective self. Your media reflects this too. I mean just look at the WJC circus:loony:

JMHO, but Canadians LOVE getting offended by the actions of 'cocky Russians'.....and your media really promotes this angle.
But I cast no blame. It makes for a great 'good guys vs bad guys' story line. Keeps rivalries fresh. Makes for good entertainment.

today's headline from an article on a Russian hockey website.

http://allhockey.ru/article/show/22...2016_kto_nibud_ujdet_ne_vyslushav_gimn_Rossii

"Церемонию ИИХФ стоит поменять, иначе на ЧМ-2016 кто-нибудь уйдёт, не выслушав гимн России"

translation = "IIHF award ceremony should be changed, otherwise at the 2016 WHC somebody (losing team) will leave without listening to Russia's national anthem"

So, it appears some in Russia expect that protocol be followed and respect given to the winning team.

A country with an historical sensitivity to Western slights and perceived slights wouldn't give a crap if Canadians walked out on the Russian anthem? Right....

Even the Russian federation said publicly they were embarrased by what happened. They tried to say to the IIHF that it was miscommunication but as teh IIHF said, video evidence said otherwise. They should judt pay the fine, strip Kovy of his captaincy for the season and move on.

Kovalchuk just seems like a poor loser. Just comes across as the cocky/arrogant type when his team is winning, but the petulant spoiled little child when his team is losing.

He should have been suspended.

Its interesting to see all the Maple Leaf flags scapegoating Kovalchuk as the villain in this sorry episode. He makes a convenient target because he is cocky and arrogant, and, worst offense of all, he did leave the NHL for the KHL at the height of his career. And yes, he should be stripped of his captaincy, not because of anything related to this incident, but because his play has been so poor in recent outings that he has become far more of a detriment to the Russian NT than an asset. At this stage, he should be excluded from any further NT activities.

But to blame him for the decision to leave the ice is completely crazy. All of his teammates who left were multi-millionaires who are responsible for their own actions. They left because they were embarrassed about how poorly they played representing Russia. It was truly a gutless and character-free performance that they should feel humiliation about, not the trivial incident that followed post-game. I can't remember if Bobrovsky left or not, but if he didn't, he should have. Bobrovsky's performance was one of the worst goaltending efforts in Russian NT hockey history. And of course, the defense was an embarrassment, which was to be expected.

Don't blame Kovalchuk - in many ways, he was no worse than anyone else. This was a team that was very lucky to end up in the Gold Medal game, so they should celebrate their good fortune!

He is also a shadow of his former playing days. I would prefer not to see him on future Russian national teams - which already have plenty solid left wingers.

Again I disagreed with what the Russians did but I don't know if they should have been suspended for it or not.

Respect and sportmanship is a very important thing in sports and in life. It is great from russian hockey federation to apoligize this and makes everyone respect them for that definetly.

As a Canadian. I could give a rats arse if they stayed on the ice or not. We buried them, shook their hands and took the prize. If they want to leave the ice so be it. all the hurt feelings on here is hilarious. call the Waaaambulance. we kicked some tail and that is all that matters.

Except when the russians win?

Because every other participating country agrees and understands these protocalls, and agrees to them in the spirit of sportsmanship.

Something team russia needs a lesson in - clearly.

Looking foolish is it's own punishment I suppose.

you guys just love this topic ... seems to go well with the general demonization of Russia in the media.

The russians are doing just fine demonizing themselves, I think. But that's neither here nor there.

No one forced them off the ice. They didn't have the backbone to stand in defeat - that's on them alone. I doubt Canada leaves in future as retaliation - you other people do what the hell you want.

This has been my opinion about most of the Russian team leaving the ice early. Considering they previously won the World Championship in 2008, 2009, 2012, and 2014 so they all knew how the process works. When they lost the Gold Medal game in 2010 I remember they stayed on the ice for the Czech Republic anthem, so there was no excuse for Ilya Kovalchuk to tell everyone before the Canadian anthem and those who choose to follow him.
