Don't you think he's going to ask for more $ if he gets shorter term? Would much rather sign a 5m x 8. He'd only be 32 when his contract is over. That's pretty good value getting a player from 24-32.

EDIT: 25-33. Forgot about his last year's contract with the Avs/whatever team he gets traded to. Maybe a 5.5m x 6 years would be more ideal.

If we made a move like that and then made a couple other aggressive moves like:
- 1st + Ferland for Lucic
- Backlund for Girardi
- Granlund for Gormley
- Sign Williams or Stafford as a UFA

Gaudreau - Monahan - Oshie
Lucic - O'Reilly - Williams/Stafford
Bouma - Stajan - Colborne/Jones
Bollig/Wolf - Jooris - Colborne/Jones
Raymond

Giordano - Brodie
Girardi - Wideman
Russell - Engelland
Gormley

Hiller
Ramo

Salary cap says hello.

hpothetically speaking if we managed to get ROR with hudler being the main piece going back what would u guys see our forward lineup being. (assume we sign someone like frolik in free agency to fill hudlers void)

Gaudreau-Monahan-Frolik?
Bennett-ROR-Colborne?
Bouma-Backlund-Jones?

Rough guess. Bennett, ROR and Backlund all can play W and C

O'Reilly makes zero sense to acquire given

a) the cost in assets (the Avs won't trade him cheaply to a divisionconference rival; they'd want Brodie)
b) the price tag to sign him (it's speculated O'Reilly wants 7M per on a long term deal - give him that and be prepared to give Gaudreau and Monahan 8M pretty soon)
c) He's just not a need (the Flames don't need O'Reilly to be a 7M third line centre behind Monahan and Bennett or a second line LW behind Gaudreau)

Are we back in the Northwest Division?

The main argument I'd make is, his playing style would fill an enormous need in our top 6. He's also extremely versatile, I'd didn't know he plays both wings.

If we can talk to him before trade about contract that would be a game changer.

Yes the deal would hinge on the Flames talking to him and coming to a verbal agreement. Guessing it'd be between 6.5-7 but no one really knows. He'd be your shutdown #2 C(he's more effective at C) with Bennett on his wing and would take a lot of defensive pressure off of Monahan.

Don't think O’Reilly's ever played rightwing before; just centre or left wing.

The Flames could definitely use a two way player like O’Reilly but it doesn't make sense once you factor in the cost, both in acquiring him and signing him longterm.

Friedman in a radio spot today (Friedman: Hudler won’t be cheap in trade) stated, among other things, that the Flames want a big, power guy that can keep up with their skilled players (7:40 mark; based on the Ducks series). Said Backes is the type of player (not Backes himself) that they're looking for. Also, Lucic could be someone like that, but the Bruins see him as a foundational player.

The whole thing is worth listening too; Friedman gave some insight as the kind of GM Treliving is. Also said, he'd be surprised if the Flames are in on Kessel.

We should make a list of Backes-type NHL'ers..

-Backes
-Lucic
-Simmonds
-Hartnell

Yeah, it's a short list. Maybe add Wilson (Capitals), Ladd (Jets) and Dubinsky (Blue Jackets).

All of those guys are either too old or would cost too much to acquire. The Flames will just have to draft their own (Crouse, Connor, etc) or hope one or more of Colborne, Bouma, Ferland, and/or Smith can develop into that.

I think a guy like Adam Lowry out of Winnipeg has the potential to be one of those guys. Not sure what the price would be relative to the others or if he could be had easily. My guess would be that the Jets are pretty high on him. But thought he could potentially be added to the list.

Still young and unproven but I like how he plays.
