About Giordano's extension what you guys/gals thinking?

I'm thinking 7 years 7.5m AAV (52.5m)
9/9/8/8/7/7/4.5

Flames get manageable caphit, Gio get his big money + term.

5 year 37.5 million. More then iffy got before he hit UFA. Gio will be 33 by the time his new contract kicks in. He understands we need to fit Money, JH, Brodie, Bennett and hopefully one more high end piece long term.

When his five years are up then we can use that money to give pay raises to those other guys.

A buddy and I were discussing how fantastic it would be if Gio's new deal became the Lidstrom style deal for the Flames. Nobody gets more than him.

I don't know seven years is a pretty long time. I'd be happier with something around 8m x 5.

I'd be happy with this. But the price might be a bit higher, which could hurt us with other signings that need to happen. But what do ya do? Gio imo as the best dman in the league last year. You're gonna have to pay him, the guy is the real deal.

I think Gio will take less money in hopes of winning a Cup.

  • Mark Giordano: 7 years/$42,000,000
    • 2016-17 [Age 32]: $9,000,000 (NMC & $3,000,000 paid July 1 as a signing bonus)
    • 2017-18 [Age 33]: $8,000,000 (NMC & $1,500,000 paid July 1 as signing bonus)
    • 2018-19 [Age 34]: $8,000,000 (NMC & $1,000,000 paid July 1 as signing bonus)
    • 2019-20 [Age 35]: $6,000,000 (NMC & $1,000,000 paid July 1 as signing bonus)
    • 2020-21 [Age 36]: $5,000,000 (NMC & $1,000,000 paid July 1 as signing bonus)
    • 2021-22 [Age 37]: $3,000,000 (NTC & $1,000,000 paid July 1 as a signing bonus)
    • 2022-23 [Age 38]: $3,000,000 (10 team NTC & $2,000,000 paid July 1 as a signing bonus

I really dig this format in this thread. Gives an idea what we're thinking year to year for UFA suggestions and alike.

I don't think that contract is allowed under the CBA. The final year has to be within 50% of the first year (and each year has to be within 35% of the previous). Not that there's anything wrong with the total value or the AAV but it would have to go something like

8
8
7
6
5
4
4

That said, 7y/42 million would be an amazing contract and set us forward for the entirety of the contract. By the time it's in its last few years it will likely be only a very small percentage of the cap allowing us to worry about Brodie's final contract without handcuffs.

Personally I think 6y /40 million is a contract that both parties can be happy with too:

8.5
8.0
7.5
6.5
5.25
4.25

AAV = 6.67 million per year. Gio gets almost as much money, but if he's still effective at age 38 he can easily get himself a one-year deal that's worth 3-4 million if Iginla/Jagr are any indication.

I simply can't see Gio agreeing to anything less that $8M for 6 year term.

I'm guessing he's asking for $9M over 8 years.

I thought it could drop more than 50% overall but no more than 50% in 4 years or something of that nature?

I'm sticking to $40M/5yrs.

Treliving mentions five year models all the time. Burke has boasted on more than one occasion that he's never given a contract over five years.

Giordano gets a fair cap hit while the Flames aren't burdened by excessive term.

I don't want to go anything too long. Ideally right now I'd want maybe a 3 or 4 year deal. If you think about it the new contract will kick in when he's 33. Some of the proposed deals take him to 40 at a cap hit of 6 or more. Will he still be worth that when he is that old? I'm not convinced. During those last few years is when I really think we could use that extra money to push us over the top and there's no sense paying a guy for what he once was at the time we could use some extra $$'s the most. If he is still worth 6 mill after 3 years than sure sign him to that but he's only played two full 82 game seasons in 7 years since coming back from Russia (excluding the lockout where he missed one). How we he hold up as age creeps in?

Even if we could get him at 9 for the next 3 years and then handle it like the Wings did with Lidstom giving him 1 year deals at a time I think that would be best.

Is this realistic though? I'm not sure. I just think it is best not to hand out 5+ years to a 33 year old.

At first I was like why does 100TG's want Versteeg? then he buys him out.
If Treliving did this, it would make me soooo happy. I hate Versteeg with a passion, like to an unhealthy degree. He should be a Penguin.

actually that gives me an idea......

If Gio is solid on more than 5 years. He should be traded unless he is giving a huge deal on money, like $6 mill a year.

Definitely frontload him for the first 2-3 years. I'd sign a 5 year, 8m AAV.

Y1 - 9m
Y2 - 9m
Y3 - 8m
Y4 - 7m
Y5 - 7m

Yep, why trade for a boat anchor contract, when we sign one of our own! Everyone of these long term/big money contracts were justifiable at the time, to younger players. If Gio won't sign a contract with a cap hit and term that fits the rebuild, he will be traded. That's why this contract was built with an expiring NTC, cause he'll be 33! Flames really have all the leverage.

Kovalchuk...if he leaves the KHL, any interest? And how would he be acquired?

Free high end winger, RH shot... I mean, I doubt he comes without big money... Which Calgary really shouldn't be giving out at this time.
