Holy crap is there even anything to do with rumors or proposals in here? I don't mind a bit of fun on HF Oil, but shouldn't all these shenanigans have their own home/thread?

If all I wanted to read had to do with Cloned and Soli having their distractions, then I'd go there. I'm coming here for actual rumors and proposals...

I'm going to allow it.

There's nothing out there in terms of rumors. Friedman just had his Oilers Now hit and nothing said perked my ears.

Proposals are being bandied about.

I can manufacture rumours about Cloned if you'd like. I'm sure we're all curious to know what exactly happened to Clonea, Cloneb, and Clonec.

I think that only happens if the Oilers take another bad contract in return or if they are attaching him to a more attractive asset to bring in an asset that's less attractive than the Oilers asset, something like Puljujarvi+Spooner to Carolina for pending UFA Ferland.

We’re a lot closer to waiving/buying out Spooner than we are trading him IMO. My money is on a buyout this summer...it’s the Chiarelli way.

I’m not saying it was someone else’s fault. I’m saying basically every trade he made in Boston isn’t half as bad as people claim.

The Seguin trade? Covered above.

The Wheeler trade? Peverley was a much better player at the time, and helped them win a cup. That was a good trade.

The Connolly trade? 2 2nds for a 15 goal, 3rd liner. Was it an overpay? Sure. But he was still worth a 2nd+. Again, the issue was Sweeney letting him walk for nothing

The Boychuk trade? Bruins fans complained about Krejci and Bergeron’s contracts, and yet he was supposed to sign Boychuk for 6 per, until he’s 38? Meanwhile he got 2 2nds, and a 3rd for a guy he got for Matt Hendricks (back when Hendricks was going to be a career AHLer), instead of getting nothing for him when he went to free agency

He also made a LOT of good trades. He’s made a lot of stupid mistakes in Edmonton, but that doesn’t mean he did the same in Boston.
Chia's GM career should be segmented into 5 years of good to great GM'ing followed by years of predominantly bad to very bad GM'ing to end his tenure in Boston and then 4 years of predominantly terrible work as the GM of the Edmonton Oilers. He had some early success and shrewd moves, but after his one big success in winning a cup he coudln't do much right, now it's been 8 years of riding former glory and someone needs to pull the plug on him.

With respect to Boychuk I think he would of signed a more team friendly deal to stay in Boston he loved it there and the trade was only necessitated by his horrible cap management, took on too many bonus laden contracts and ended up with $4.75M in bonus cap overages.

No more f***ing buyouts. That shit adds up over time. Suck up the mistake you made and play him on your 4th line or waive him.

Chiarelli needs to stop building a team for this year and start building a team that can contend annually.

Stauffer just asked Friedman specifically about ferland silferverg a.a mantha and Nyquist from Detroit zuccarelloabd Hayes from nyr and Simmons from Philly I think that was all of them...freidman didn't say oilers were interested in any specifically.
Friedman already linked us to both of Ferland and Zuccarello in his 31 thoughts column. Not sure what the abd is there for, were you trying to reference someone else?

Hope not, send that bum to the AHL.

1.023M for 2 years with a buyout, or 2.025M cap hit for 1 year buried.

I think buried is probably smarter.

Manning buyout is 917k and 667k over the 2 years. That's not too bad.

lol, talking about buying out guys that we just traded for with the intention of them helping us win games.

I wish more people shared this attitude.

Spooner, Kassian, Manning, and Benning expire next year. Let that shit expire, that's about $9m you can use to sign a legit top 6 winger and a couple useful pieces.

Only buyout I'd be in favor of is Sekera - but at the end of next season. Nurse is due for a raise, give him a portion of Sekera's money.

Even then, he may prove to be a veteran who can carry the 3rd pairing and we can trade him with some cap retained.

Edit: Not to mention we have internal options to afford to let those guys walk.
  • McLeod likely starts in the AHL next year. When Spooner walks, McLeod can start at 3C. He certainly has the size, speed, and 2-way ability for it.
  • Kassian is too expensive for what he brings. Marody or Patrick Russell could take up 4RW.
  • Manning is an expensive 7D. We already have Sekera & Jones as candidates for 3LD with Lagesson being a legitimate call-up option or 7D.
  • Benning is fine imo, but Bouchard is ready to take over 3RD next season. If not him then Persson or Bear (and we'll have a legit RD PP guy).

The Fourth Period trade watch Top 30 list has the Oilers interested in Hayes, Simmonds, Zuccarello, Howard, Dzingel, Martinez, Keith (?!), Brassard, Ferland, and Kreider. They have Talbot at 18 with San Jose and NY Islanders believed to be interested. They also have Lucic at 29 but there are no teams listed that are believed to be interested (shocker!). That's the most Oiler related references on one of those watch lists that I can recall in a long time.

I would be more annoyed by this if the state of the team didn't have me checked out for a while now anyways. I'm just hoping Chia DOESN'T make a move before he's hopefully fired in the offseason at this point.

He most likely would clear waivers and still carry a 2M caphit next year

If he’s bought out it would save them 2.6M in 19/20 and be a hit of 1.3M in 20/21

Anybody who thought that we WOULDN'T be buying out or releasing these players when we obtained them isn't really paying attention.

Then flush the cap space for next year. No need to prolong these mistakes even further into the future. If you f***ed up, suck it up and suffer the consequences. No need to f*** it up for your successor too.

Legit Question: So, I'm not aware of this rule, but over at Lowetide's blog he stated that because McLeod didn't sign his ELC, his contract won't slide. Does this mean that he is exposed to the expansion draft?
