Shuda just kept Talbot.

We could have broke a record next season. Most goals allowed on the first shot. Something for the record books.

Why keep Koskinen. Guy just demolished Talbot and saved the season at the time. Sheesh.

Saved the season? Have you looked at the standings recently?

From that time, yes he did keep us in survival mode. Shat on Talbot.

What don't you get about that? Talbot was sinking this team faster than Eberle helped sink us in the playoffs.

Must have been that save vs Flames that made him the must lock up before February for Chia

So he kept us in the turtle race that is the western conference wildcard.

3 X 4.5 is somehow justified?

Talbot had a .928 save percentage over 113 games before he got a similar deal. Koskinens 27, half of which have been awful, justifies the same amount?

I really hope it's not playoffs or bust.
Instead of big moves, I'd focus on a bunch of little ones, that could help us down the line. UFAs and contracts out, to open up space for next year.

Chiasson - would be a great, cheap rental for a team. Trade him at peak value (have we EVER done this?)
Kassian - picks or we could keep since he's been playing good.
Benning - picks
Petrovic - rental for picks
Talbot - rental for picks
Manning / Spooner obviously aren't going anywhere unfortunately.

Stockpile picks - they could become assets to trade for depth players at the draft/free agency.

Being better than Talbot doesn't make you deserve 4.5M x 3

Montoya Or Broissoit were better last year than the Talbot of this season

Still waiting for your 3 better goalies that sign for 4.5M or less...

Considering there isn't even a reasonable sample size to come to a conclusion on how good he actually is, that isn't really a question to be answered.

Which is why this contract could have been signed near the end of the season. Like do people not realize how quickly this could go sour? If the most recent version of Koskinen is what we're going to get, we are f***ed. It's a gamble that a team who is in a tailspin from making gambles just can't make.

I'm aware that this GM overpays practically every single player he signs. Death by a thousand cuts and all that.

Essentially what you're saying is that if ANY of our defensemen go down for any period of time next year, we're toast. Good to know.
Any? If Oscar Klefbom or Adam Larsson go down for an extended period, yeah, the team's in deep shit.

Again, this 'overpay' rhetoric is kind of funny considering it completely ignores the potential market for the players in question. In regards to this one in particular, a $4.5m cap hit on a short term deal has been pretty standard for the starting goaltender without a significant track record.

Mikko Koskinen Comparables Results - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

Raanta, Talbot, Darling, Greiss, Niemi, Hutton...

This is literally the least shocking thing that could have happened. @Paralyzer's prediction wasn't even that surprising. It's what I would've guessed would happen soon after Talbot started sieving again.

Of course it's not surprising. The team is stupid. It's like predicting the sun coming out, or the Oilers not making the playoffs.

And it's an overpay for a goalie that has showed a very brief flash of brilliance before the team inevitably collapsed under its own weight. This team is littered with overpays on players that have shown brief flashes before inevitably reverting to the norm. There was zero reason to do this deal right now while the team is mired in misery.

How long do you think before we're talking about Koskinen the same way we're talking about Talbot? 3 years at that price is a massive risk for a GM that should've been gone at least a month ago if not more.

And more to the point, why didn't he sign Koskinen cheaper coming out of the KHL? Any extension was going to be costly. Are there any Chia contracts we haven't come to regret?

Correct me if I'm wrong, almost every single goalie you mentioned on that list, besides maybe Darling, had over 100 games under their belts before they were given money. In terms of goalies trying to grab the starting position, that is multiple seasons worth of games. We've given Koskinen 4.5 million based of 27.

There aren’t going to be many 4 million dollar goalies. Most are guys worth under 3, or over 5. Koskinen belongs in the under 3 group, and he’s one of the better ones in

But regardless, Jimmy Howard might sign for under 4.5, and he’s a clear upgrade. Miller is arguably still better and signed for less than half Koskinen. Brian Elliott is similar and also signed for substantially less.

Yeah which should be a cautionary tale.

It's one thing to pay that to a guy who has a history, another to overpay a guy with a non-existent track record.

Do you really think this is a decision that couldn't have waited until April or June? Do you think there'd be a big bidding war for this guy and that a ton of teams would be offering more? Because that's unrealistic.
I think it's possible that some teams in Russia could start throwing some offers in. It's also possible that this team surges once Klefbom returns and the team makes the playoffs with Koskinen as their clear starter. I think that there are a very limited number of starter caliber goaltenders in the NHL and the ones that are available in the summer get scooped up quickly.

This is exactly like the Russell signing, where people somehow believed he was a terrible signing. When in reality the market for defensemen that summer was completely non-existent. Yet, people continued to bitch and moan despite the fact that Kris Russell is a staple on the back end and the team suffers in his absence. This board never learns. It's always damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Russell still has a bloated contract for what he brings.

With Chiarelli, it's ALWAYS damned if you do, because he damns the team every time he does something.

Howard is over the hill and there is a reason Detroit doesn't make him their #1, Miller is old too and can't be a #1, and Elliot has had an awful showing the last 3 years. I still take Koskinen over those.
