Players as they get older tend to be more coachable. Nurse will most likely fall into this category when taking into consideration the current Oiler coaches.
I am pretty sure that Nurse is coachable.
He just doesnt have an abundance of hockey sense.

The Cap had better be going up a lot to accomodate 3 players making just under $40.
This extremely top heavy template is right out of the Leafs playbook and its clear it just doesnt work.

The Leafs lose because they’re paying that to guys who produce at a 60-70 point pace in the playoffs. Our big guys are nearly doubling them. Colorado pays their top 4 guys pretty similar to what Toronto does, and they’ve been successful with it

Toronto doesn't have Makar/Toews/etc on the back end. Toronto forwards have to work a lot hard in both zones.

Hear me out folks!! I gots a brilliant idear.

Assuming we are leading the series in the finals, Holland/Knob go to Campbell and make a deal, we suit you up as backup next game.. might give you a few mins in net if that is needed to get your name on the cup, and you just retire afterwards!

Bada Bing bada bam.. win win
I like it! What a career… no shame in hanging em up after a Cup win.

And their guys can’t produce cause they play in the most toxic market in Hockey.

I dont think he was very coachable at all.

His play suggests that he is finally starting to listen. Perhaps that's due to the quality of coaching now and the lack thereof in previous years.

Well...while Nurse might have the physical ability to be a #1 dman he just doesnt think the game at that level.
So in addition to his age its very unlikely that he gets any better than he is.

Yeah...the RFA part of it may be a saving grace although he is going to get handsomely paid at some point.
Nurse has gotten better this year, and in the last month also.

Nurse doesnt strike me as a player that isnt coahcable though. I mean niether of us are in the room or at practice but his demeaner suggests that he doesnt have an overtly big ego making him a difficult player.

I just think that when he is asked to be a top pairing dman it is above and beyond his ability to think the game. So he scrambles and tries to do too much. and makes a lot of mistakes.
The reason he has been doing better IMO is because his usage has gone done and the quality of competition has gone down as well.
So he is doing better because he doesnt have to play above his ability.
Credit to the Ekholm/Bouchard pairing (for bumping Nurse down to a 4/5/6 role) and to Knoblauch for recognizing that less TOI and a lower quality of competition makes for a better Darnell Nurse.

You don't go through as many coaches in as many years as the Oilers without guys in the room with an A on their sweater tuning them out.

Nurse is at that exact age where Dmen take a more mature step. He now has good coaches and a smart older Dman to learn from. Up to him. He is stubborn though. lol

Thank goodness for that because he was pretty bad for a very long stretch.
He was bad for a top pairing Dman but was not a bad NHL Dman. We all have seen what bad looks like in Edmonton

I would agree with this.
If Nurse isnt used as a top pairing dman then he is probably fine.
The problem is that he is getting paid like a top pairing dman.

Nurse needs a partner that is extremely defensively aware. And ideally that can do the majority of the passing for the pair. Not at all what you would expect a 9.25M dman to need, but it is what it is. Thank goodness for off side playing Kulak to rescue the second pair against Dallas.

We never bothered to get a RHD that compliments nurse very well.

I've stood up and defended Nurse for years, yes his deal is too high, but that wasn't his fault, he has a career year in a contract year, and was the Oilers' best dman at the time. I didn't think he was a high end #1 D, I though maybe a 20th-35th best dman in the league. But based on his play this season, and his play in the majority of the playoffs, he isn't even top 100 D in the league. Maybe it's injuries, maybe it's the wrong partner, who knows, but the guy has struggled as of late. I do feel he has the ability to get his game back and get back to a top 50 D in the league, so a #2. But, actions speak louder than words, put up or shut up. Right now, his deal is one of the worst in the NHL, I hope he can get back to what he was. Maybe a new partner next season will help him get things back on track.

Nurse can earn his salary in this final alone. Needs to play Bennett and Tkachuk hard between the whistles.

One good thing about the 3m bonus from Brown being an overage is it kind of reserves it for Draisaitl when he is due, obviously he could get more but that should cover most of it.

Good defense #1. He can't try to chase these guys for hits. He just needs to absolutely nail them any time he can catch them near or with the puck. No letting up, no weak little poking 1 handed with the stick. Just absolutely smoke them every time like every Canucks D did to McDavid, Hyman and Drai.

If the cap only goes up 1 million we are kinda boned because of the Brown bonus overage. All the more reason to win it all this year lol

If i'm reading Capfriendly right, we will have 10 million available next season and boatload after next season.

Should be fine and have enough available to re-sign Draisaitl easily.
