I feel like our bottom 4 D lack some puck movement, would you sign Barrie as a Ceci replacement? Seems like he'd be a steal again after the year he had. He can QB PP2 then for whenever we use them. I feel like you could get him for around 2.5m.
Barrie isn’t a great pick mover either. I’d sign Stetcher who has good metrics, especially in transition defence, playing top 4 mins in Arizona.

We need a puck mover that can defend, and thats not Barrie.

If Drai wants to see what McDavid wants to do, what about seeing if Drai would sign for 1 year? Make his deal line up with McDavid's and they can see what the other is doing

I've thought this as a great idea for a long time actually. See if Drai is willing to sign a pretty friendly team deal for his last year, and use the money to sign another free agent/veteran to help out as well. The problem is that Drai has already been criminally underpaid on this contract, so I doubt he'd be willing to take one for the team in this respect, and I wouldn't blame him.

Broberg has to be on at least the second pair next year or he's getting traded imo

Going to be a big offseason, probably can't trade Nurse, Broberg has shown he is better, and we have too many LD for the top 4. I doubt we pay Nurse 9 million to play on the third pairing, so something has to happen

Nurse plays on the 2nd pair and Broberg on the 3rd?

Penciling him into the top 4 isn't necessary. I agree that he's looked fantastic skating the puck out of the zone himself. It's something that few guys can do in this league. He's also a pretty underrated passer, hitting guys at the blue line with speed. Most just flip the puck into the neutral zone or chip it out.

The interesting thing is what happens to Kulak? He's been a rock and really elevated his game. I wonder what kind of return he can bring. Or do the Oilers plan on keeping both for the bottom pair?

A good problem to have but I wouldn't be surprised if we move on from Ceci and one of Kulak or Desharnais.

He played well as the season progressed.

Anyone can be traded or given another chance. Much better than throwing money away for the next half a decade.
It's BIG if that he can be traded, he would be traded with a sweetener and likely have a retention as well. So unless it's a "really good" deal, buyout is the only reality.

I think the plan has to be for one of Nurse, Broberg, or Kulak to play on their off-side.

Considering they're skating Broberg on that side in the SCF, I don't think it's too much of a reach to give him a shot there to the start of the season.

Imo the correct move is trading Ceci and re-signing Vinny somewhere around 2mil.

We know Ekholm-Bouchard is a fantastic top pairing. we know Kulak-Vinny is a strong combo, and we've seen Nurse look miles better when he's with a good skater and puck handler, two aspects Broberg brings in spades.

Issue with Campbell is you're at best trading him at 50% and having that hit the cap for the next 3 years or swapping him for just as big/bigger boat anchor like Gibson, Kuemper, Grubauer, or Merzlikins in a trade.

With the cap finally moving up, that 1.5mil for the back half of the buyout isn't unpalatable.

You left out the option of adding a pick and/or prospect/player to the deal.

3 years at 5 mil/per, I don't want to imagine what adds it would take to get teams to do that trade without sending their own overpriced contract back.

I just don't see a trade where the OIl come out saving 2mil+ on the cap without them paying an exorbitant price.

You obviously don't want to imagine, you blocked it out of your mind completely. ;)

It doesnt matter what you or I think is fair or what another team might think is fair, it just matters that a trade is an option.

I think your wrong on value, but time will only tell unless those in charge decide it best to throw away money at the most important of times instead of some pick/prospect who might be ready in five years...

I have little faith they will make the right (IMO) decision. ;)

Stecher's a bottom pairing D. We should look at trading for a young, underperforming RD that still has some potential and needs a fresh start like Boquist.

They will roll with Broberg as the 3rd pairing guy for all of next year, and he likely ends up being the 2nd pairing guy in minutes by the end of the year. The "what to do with Nurse" problem is really going to be a summer of 2025 issue I think.

Pairings for next year:
Ekholm/Bouchard
Nurse/VD
Broberg/<cheap fill in>

Ceci and Kulak both get moved out is my guess. They might hand onto Kulak though, and run Broberg on the right side, that wouldn't surprise me either. Kulak has been good in the playoffs two years in a row after all, and he isn't expensive at 2.75. If VD is wanting too much, I could see them letting him go as well, and signing a veteran righthand guy for cheap, and in that scenario they keep Kulak for certain.

I think the plan has to be for one of Nurse, Broberg, or Kulak to play on their off-side.

Agree on all of this, I just think VD might price himself out of our available range. At that point you run Viking/Bouch, Nurse/Broberg, Kulak/<cheap guy>

This might sound completely crazy, but I wouldn't be surprised if they give Campbell another shot next year to see if he can create some trade value for himself. If he can play the first quarter of the season at a respectable level, the trade options around him would increase quite a bit. Maybe you only have to give up a 2nd rounder + some retention to offload him in that scenario. It wouldn't shock me really, goalies are voodoo as everybody knows, and they "come back from the dead" fairly regularly it seems.

Campbell got lit up in the AHL playoffs, he's done here.

Moving 3 years of that contract is virtually impossible unless the new GM gets creative with retention/getting a 3rd team involved etc.

The reality is that a buyout is the only option, even if you want to trade the contract at 50% retained you're still attaching an asset and get very little cap savings the next 3 years compared to a buyout, much less cap savings next season in the true Cup contention window. Also, the $1.5m for the 3 years after will take up less of a cap percentage as the cap rises so 1.5m then compared to now will be much less of an issue. Buyout is really the only option here.

By the time playoffs kick in next year, Broberg will on the 2nd paring with Kulak. Nurse will be a 3rd pairing D making 9.25M. I think Desharnais will walk. We will have Kemp or Stecher which will be good enough until deadline.
