I wonder if we could add Vatanen this offseason. He's a UFA and I doubt Carolina re-sign him. Get rid off Russell.

Klefbom-Vatanen
Nurse-Bear
Jones-Larsson

Adds a d-man with some puck-moving ability and offensive skills. Pretty balanced D and you have Bouchard who can fill in for Larsson.
How much does he sign for you think?

I honestly have no idea, but I think for him term is more important than money. He's 29 so he wants as long of a deal as possible I'd imagine. With the flat cap I don't think he expects to get a hefty contract in terms of money. Something around 5 mil maybe? I don't know. Maybe someone who is more of a stats whiz than me could come up with a number. He was paid $4.875 million on his last deal so I'd expect something around that figure again.

Vatanen probably pulls somewhere in the 4's.

Some members of this board would punt Klefbom because he's "injury prone" but it's worth noting the healthiest Vatanen has ever been is 71 games

I think both of us them are useful so long as we prepare for the fact that they can't be relied upon for an entire season.

Klefbom being injury prone hasn't been the issue, having a "#1D" that's injury prone has been the issue.

I'll take Vatanen all day in the 4's. Having success in the Pacific division already is a plus. You just don't know with some defencemen that have always only ever played in the East.

Sign me up for Vatanen as well. Try to dump Russell for a low pick. Trade Larsson for a forward a la Kapanen.

Then you can run

Klefbom - Vatanen
Nurse - Bear
Jones - Benning

Alternatively, trade Benning instead of Larsson and recoup some picks.

Yep, that's what I would do as well. The Larsson-Kapanen trade is something I thought about recently too. It makes sense for both teams IMO.

I'd certainly be happy with it, but I feel like they'd need a plus based on contracts.

That seems like a pretty solid deal for us isn’t it?

a top line RW signed for 4 more years through his prime at under 7m a year, for a dman who’s not good enough to play top pairing but seems likely to price himself off the team as a number 4?

If Kassian and AA are playing to their abilities they could form one fast, big and solid pair of 3rd line wingers. I would like a big 2 way center to complete that line. When was the last time that we had a really effective and hard to play against 3rd line?

I'd say...

Moreau - Marchant - Grier

That was an awesome 3rd line!

Edit:

And forever ago.. ;(

That is an outlandishly huge overhaul on our D that it just becomes completely unrealistic.

I see the value in a consistent guy like Dumoulin a lot of our guys are subject to a few more ups and downs then most d-cores, but we are downgrading skill wise here and Klef definitely has the higher ceiling. I'm a Klef fan and would prefer to stick with him, but I could see why someone might want to do something like this. This is the equivalent of the Tom Gilbert for Nick Schultz trade just a couple tiers up in player quality.

Carolina has been trying to become a consistent playoff team for years and right now they are, I highly doubt they want to rock the boat and move a big fixture like Hamilton out. They'd likely want a huge overpay and I don't think this is one.

3rd trade wouldn't bother me and it doesn't feel completely unreasonable value wise, Brodin and Klef are really good friends and like playing together if we were to acquire him it seems to make sense to try them together, Brodin has quite a bit of experience playing the RD position. We paid a pretty penny for both Larsson and AA so it doesn't look like a good trade chain, but I could see the deal making us better.

4th trade is a Merry Christmas present to Van, players like Pearson don't fetch that kind of return, it wasn't long ago he was traded for Carl Hagelin and Erik Gudbranson who had roughly 3rd round pick valuations. Even if you were giving Pearson credit for a bounce back season (who knows if he can sustain it) you're talking a 2nd round pick valuation. Are we upgrading the 2nd to a 1st just to eat 1 year on Russell's deal? That's madness. If you want $4M in capspace immediately that's pretty close to what you save on a Neal buy-out ($3.83M)

I'm doubtful Kassian has any value in the league with his new contract in place, before it sure, but I think a lot of teams would view $3.2M as being on the high side for him given most of his production was with McDrai.

Value it's to Minnesota who doesn't need or want either players

Fair points.

My rationale in acquiring Dumoulin is that he would be a better fit on a pairing with an offensive defender like Hamilton. Guy has played the same role as partners with Letang in Pittsburgh. You get a more consistent defender. You lose the PP ability of Klef, but that's arguable how much value he provides there anyway.

Hamilton still seems like the odd man out in Carolina. They have a LOT of defenders and have played well for large stretches this season with Hamilton out due to injury. They quite possibly don't need him. If they want more I'd consider throwing in Samorukov.

Fourth trade is basically just replacing Russell's salary with Pearson's, except Pearson would play a more useful role on the team since he has the offensive ability to play with McDavid. It's an overpay for sure, but if it makes you feel better you could probably throw the 1st into the trade for Hamilton instead and throw a prospect into the Pearson trade instead.

Are you going to answer your reasonrea fir the 3rd one thinking Minnesota would even say yes?

Keep DRY line together.

Dump Neal with the 1st this year.

Put 1 very good 2 way winger on his line and fill with low risk, low cap, high reward, high skill players with Connor(HoSang, Sprong, Svechnikov, etc).

Use rest of cap on 3rd line to take advantage of other teams weak competition or shutdown other teams line your choice.

Fill 4th line with actual energy players.

I approve of all these moves, but Fabbri is not a center. I still like him as a winger though.

I don't think I would do that trade. Personally not convinced about Nylander in tough playoff grinds and Nurse is still part of this young, developing leadership core.

I think a Nurse deal would be quite low likelihood but if he were to move I think the return would be a higher than Nylander.
