Signing Lehner would be our best bet in the crease imo.... But that would leave us spending more than I’m comfortable with on 2 goalies.

Ok, radical thoughts here. But I actually think it would work and we would have a much different team. I think I valued trades ok, even gave up maybe more than I needed to.

UFA Sign

Peitrangelo, Alex: 9,000,000 (5 years)
Puljujarvi, Jesse: 1,500,000 (3 years)
Benning, Matt: 2,000,000 (2 years)
Trades

EDM

  1. Johnsson, Andreas
  2. Muzzin, Jake
TOR

  1. Larsson, Adam
  2. Russell, Kris
  3. Marody, Cooper
  4. Samorukov, Dmitri
  5. Athanasiou, Andreas [RFA Rights]
High price to pay to get rid of Russell, but also some value. Muzzin much more of what we need moving forward on the back end than Nurse and Larsson.
EDM

  1. Pickard, Calvin
  2. 2020 1st round pick (DET)
DET

  1. Nurse, Darnell
  2. Neal, James
Not sure what that pick would be. I might be overvaluing Nurse (homer rules).

New Roster

(Note: The McLeod/Lavoie/Benson/Puljujarvi spots could be filled by cheap UFA's or other talent that emerges from within or each other depending on who is hot)

Nygard McLeod/Khaira Kassian/Puljujarvi
Archibald, McLeod/Khaira Chiasson

I like the idea of signing Petro. But that trade is pretty unrealistic ngl.

Can you expand on that? Unrealistic because trades like this don't happen or unrealistic because value is off?

Doesn't work salary wise for Toronto and Toronto needs to improve their defense and all you are giving them is a bunch of nothing and 2 3rd pairing defenders for their second best defender
This

Also, 7 player trades are pretty much impossible to pull off. It’s a whole lot of unproven quantity for proven quality at the NHL level.

Goalie upgrade is high priority. Smith was an awesome veteran leader and likely positively challenged Kosko to grow his game. But this team needs someone who can better mitigate the team breakdowns in front of them.

Oil need to tweak its veteran d-corp to save $, reduce average hockey IQ decision making mistakes, and make way for greater mobility that fits today's no hit hockey. This means one or two of Larsson, Russell, Klefbom, or Nurse goes. Holland has no ties to Larsson so I think he goes. I like Larsson more than most but he's a luxury on a weak defending team & a player built for old-school hockey that required hard nosed, physical tough and mean defenders who don't have to physically distance in today's style of play. Larsson has value to a team missing a old school type of d-man. In Covid Cap year, Russell's low cash and expiring contract might be an attractive depth guy for a team.

I don't see a AA OR Pool Party scenario. AA is on this roster with a longer runway to find his fit and deliver 2 or 3W ice-time if he wants to be. But if his hard nosed agent won't budge on salary demands then the player might move. The Oil can't afford to lose NHL talent imo and I think AA should be given a full season to re-establish or not his skills in Edmonton. One year deal. Pool Party will choose a fresh start, make more money in Edmonton, and be handled by a smart management and coaching group with honest, communication. Cheap, hungry third line depth player until he proves otherwise.

Free Agency - goalie upgrade, maybe forward depth.

Trade - veteran d 'surplus' for proven NHL forward(s). With expansion draft coming potential goalie deal with a team at risk of losing a quality young tender.

The leg injury probably keeps Ennis on another cheap deal since GMs will want to see how he recovers. It obviously sucks for him, but it’d be nice if we can afford to have him back

Klefbom for Dumoulin - Pens get a guy who can play in all situations, Oilers get someone who’s more defensively sound and has played with offensive D partners before.

Nurse + JP + for Mrazek + Hamilton - Canes get JP to reunite with Aho, get someone more locker room normal in Nurse. I’d throw in Skinner too tbh.

Larsson + AA for Brodin + Eriksson Ek - Wild downgrade at D but get the better forward in AA.

Russell + 1st for Pearson - Canucks add a first rounder and sell high on Pearson.

Sign Hoffman

Kassian for a 2nd

Chiasson for a pick

Pearson - McDavid - Hoffman
RNH - Drai - Yamamoto
Ennis - Eriksson Ek - Archibald
Nygard - Haas - Neal

Dumoulin - Hamilton
Brodin - Bear
Jones - Benning
Bouchard

Mrazek
Koskinen

Only way we pull off that Hamilton trade is if our 1st is included.
Zero chance that Brodin trade happens too. They aren't going to move their second pairing left wing for a guy who might be on their 3rd pairing right side

They might trade high on JEE though to get AA’s offensive potential.

Regarding Kris Russell, the Pens could use him if the Pens complete the miracle of ridding themselves of Jack Johnson. I think it was discussed both on the Pens board and here on Edmonton's briefly, but is there interest in a Russell for Bjugstad swap? It's very much dependent upon Bjug's health...

haha @us expecting all these changes.

This team is good enough to get to the playoffs next year with the same D core. Bouchard and Broberg will slowly filter in and Larsson\Russell will fade out.
It will be a lateral trade at best on D possibly even a short term downgrade to save $$.

Any chance the league allows compliance buyouts? A lot of teams are going to be over the cap and the NHL is going to miss their projections for next season by a significant amount.

As I've said before, this might sound crazy, but I would give Nurse and Neal away in a deal for very little, if Pietrangelo were willing to sign here.

As of now there is none. Not even sure if it's something that can change if they realize going into the third year of flat cap that teams are just screwed.

I wouldn't give Nurse away for very little, but I'd have little issue giving Neal away if it meant signing a guy as good as Pietrangelo

This, Holland is a guy who doesn’t like to rush into anything, for once he tried to buy at the deadline, AA, Ennis, Green, and 2/3 deals already don’t look great. I would presume, based on all the contracts we have already, that next season looks something like.

RNH-Mcdavid-Kassian
X/Ennis-Drai-Yamo
AA-X-Archibald
Neal-Haas-Chiasson
Nygard
McLeod, because management likes him

Klefbom-Larsson
Nurse-Bear
Russell-Bouchard
Jones
Broberg

Koskinen
X

I would say at best we can expect I think for sure a 3 or 4C, I think if Shehan was coming back his deal would already be done, because it’s not hard to sign a 4C caliber player in a league that he probably at best gets a PTO next year from someone else. I think Smith will be back if he wants to, even though I don’t agree with it at all, but from Holland saying he’s waiting to hear what Smith wants to do, I would bet that is guaranteed if he wants he will be back, but I’d bet Holland wants him with the same contract and no bonuses.

Also I am not drinking the JP Kool aid from them, that is a ploy to try to up his value. I think he will be dealt at the draft for picks. If he wanted to come back he could have signed before signing with Karpat and just got loaned there till next season if I’m not mistaken, it doesn’t take over a month from a zoom call that went “good” to sign a deal.
