If he signs with Ottawa then I doubt he gets traded to Winnipeg. It would jack up his trade value. He's only affordable as a trade acquisition for the Jets if he refuses to sign with Ottawa forcing the Sens to trade him as a pending UFA.
And maybe this is what it is all about? He is letting Ottawa recoup value, and Chevy is okay with the increased security. A 26 y/o UFA doesn't care about the picks and prospects going the other way.

Not necessarily. A sign and trade would mean a major shake up, but it's conceivable.

If Stone is happy to play long term in Winnipeg then Chevy would be unwise to pay a premium just to let Sens sign and trade. There's no value to the Jets in having the Sens sign him first and then jack up the price. Jets should hold firm and pay a rental price, period.

And maybe they will only get a small bump up in a rental price, but one Chevy is willing to pay, and the maximum Dorion can walk away with because it was the team the player wanted to go to. With the RFA contracts upcoming and likely Trouba trade it is no small thing to have this piece of the puzzle solved long term now.

There is no rationale for the Jets to work out a sign and trade. They could make a conditional trade, where the price increases a bit if the Jets re-sign him, but they shouldn't even consider paying the full cost of Stone on a long term deal. Fact is that the Sens have a pending UFA and the TDL is a week away. If they can sign Stone, let them do that, but that seems very unlikely at this point. If they can't, then use their need to trade him as leverage for a better deal, just like every other UFA.

In the event of a sign and trade is the signing contingent on the trade being made?
If so, then his value only increases if the Jets say yes. So theoreticaly the asking price shouldn't skyrocket, but human behaviour can be unpredictable.

This is gonna be a blockbuster if something gets done. I feel a shakeup is coming and im not sure who is or isn't going. If the cap guy is involved.. Gotta think cap money is going out also.

That's why I don't think it is a full cost for Stone. It will be a small convenience bump up. It could very well be that Stone was fine with the offer he had on the table, he just didn't want to spend the next 5+ years as part of a tare-down rebuild. But if he is moved to the Jets he is willing to sign the contract to be part of a contender.

Any recent history of sign and trades? Any comparables?

If these whispers about Stone signing with Ottawa is more of a Dorion pressure stunt to make it seem like the Jets need to act fast, of if the dialect that a sign and trade could be a consideration is valid

a sign and trade could make sense for the Jets it seems to me. they could use the trade to make cap room for Stone long term. they would have to do that next summer anyway to take a run at Stone as a ufa, plus they would be competing with thirty other teams to sign him.

Why would the jets want a sign and trade...sorry I'm not following. Why would Chevy want Ottawa and Melnyk negotiating a 5 year deal with Stone?

Maybe Ottawa agrees to retain money because right now i don't see how they hit the cap floor. I think this is a likely possibility. Ottawa retains enough to hit the cap floor

There's a rumour out of Ottawa that Stone re-signed with Ottawa for $9.5m x 5 years.

Also a rumour Stone was pulled from Sens practice earlier today.

Wouldn't the rationale be guaranteeing Stone is here long term vs him hitting free agency and hoping he re-signs?

Between the Pipes
The Free Press spotted Dorion and Cheveldayoff meeting behind closed doors in Cheveldayoff’s suite during the second intermission. Dorion then left and was on the phone for several minutes before returning to his press box seat, while Cheveldayoff and Chipman sat down together in the GM’s office as the third period began.
