I'd go after Blackwood personally. He's young enough that he could get better and he's over 0.900sv% on a tire fire Sharks team.
YO_YO Mac Black
I take it your talking about replacing Pickard. Blackie's as inconsistent as the North wind. Combine him with Stuart and you have a recipe for seasickness.
One night he is making a 44 save shutout and the next he is letting in 4 goals on 11 shots. If you don't believe it go look at his last 3 or 4 games.

The problem I see with Blackwood is he playing with 0 pressure. When he was asked to win for new jersey he was no better than what we have.
Magically that can't change and he can't have gotten better? How did Stu do with pressure? Flawlessly? For me it's about getting another option so that if Stu stumbles we have a capable starter and vice versa.

To heck with it. I have no faith in this management to get off their collective assets. Jackson's a caregiver negotiator, our general manager played table hockey in his mother's basement once, our pro scouts have tennis elbow from raising their glasses all day and our goalie coach cant find his glove hand vs his stick hand.

Let's reincarnate a 22 year old Robyn Regehr. I guarantee our goals against will go down. And we all will be entertained.

I do believe you are missing the point.
Am I?
Darnell has Holland over the proverbial barrel -- negotiates a contract for 30 percent more than he is worth. I remember catching my breathe in disbelief when the numbers came out. The balance of power. Each use what they can. Of course Trouba is whinning. But we all play to the rules.
Its time the owners/goveners stood up and retained a bit of power but no that wont happen. The players are already dictating who they play for, how much they are paid, even when they play (jiricek), and sometimes even the style the clubs play. Pretty soon McDavid will be the general manager and Draisaitl the pro scout.
I'm not saying return to the days of Punch Imlach or Harold Ballard (just still hate him) but i am saying that things appear to be sliding too far down the road to the left. The inmates are not GOING TO be controlling the funny farm they already have the warden and the guards tied to chairs.

Mixed Metaphors: Hope you can deal with it.

Guerins doing a lot with one hand tied behind his back. Secures and extends a superstar in Kaprivoff. Had good bones of the team from good drafting. And now possibly filled a hole on RHD with a blue chip prospect. Not all OBC members are made equal I guess.

While he has done well, you shouldn’t really get credit for doing it with one hand tied behind your back when you’re the one who tied it behind you

Regehr would spend half the season suspended in todays game but man it will be worth it for him to punish some players.

Can’t believe people want Talbot. And Vladar? These guys are no improvement on Skinner at all.
That's exactly the problem, so where are the solutions out there that are clear upgrades on Skinner? I saw Gibson thrown out there, guy hasn't been an above average starter since the Oilers broke their playoff streak in McDavid's 2nd season roughly. Yeah, Anaheim has been a mess since then but that's quite a risk you're taking at that salary even 50% retained.

Skinner prior to this season started roughly 110 games and had around a .910 save pct.
He certainly has his flaws and inconsistencies but where are the upgrades on that?
If you want to bring in a goalie to split starts with him for cheap then sure, maybe Talbot is a guy like that but there are no goalie saviors that are on the way. It's the hardest position to fill in season so the focus for improvements will likely be elsewhere

We'll take him 50% retained

Why would Anaheim want Fowler in the deal? Unless it was something like “we’ll give you Fowler for Perreault or a 1st”, but even that wouldn’t be “wanting” him in the deal. He’s their #1 dman, and not on a bad contract. Or maybe I’m just reading too much into the wording.

But regardless, I’d absolutely pay up for him if they’d retain 50%. This year an next year at 3.25 for any legit top 4 dman is hard to say no to. That’s Ceci money, but for a #2 instead of a #5

Bobrovsky's sv% against us:

Game 4= 0.688
Game 5= 0.826
Game 6= 0.842

Bobrovsky against BOS:

Game 1= 0.857
Game 3= 0.882
Game 4= 0.889

Bobrovsky against TB:

Game 1= 0.895
Game 3= 0.897
Game 4= 0.813

Bobrovsky 22/23 Playoffs against VGK:

Game 1= 0.879
Game 2= 0.692
Game 5= 0.742

This is last seasons Stanley Cup wining goalie making nearly 4 times what Skinner is.

Also Talbot last season against us in the playoofs:

Game 1= 0.864
Game 2= 0.871
Game 3= 0.850

Bobrovsky is a bit of a weird goalie because he has the ability to elevate his game on the snap of a finger and be Florida's best player at any given moment. That's just his talent roof being super high, and he rarely has three bad games in a row, what happened to us wasn't his norm.

McDavid and Drai know Talbot inside/out, that's why they can get to him, other teams don't have a McDavid/Drai so I'm not really worried about that replicating, Talbot's playoff numbers outside of that are strong.

Can’t believe people want Talbot. And Vladar? These guys are no improvement on Skinner at all.

What stats are you looking at exactly? Talbot is having an outstanding season and one of the league's best in GSAA on a team that isn't very good.

Skinner meanwhile apparently still doesn't understand the season starts Oct. 4th, not Dec. 4th. That bullshit is getting really tired (may cost us a division lead again because this team starts seasons two months after everyone else in large part due to terrible goaltending).

Talbot would take the starting job from Skinner very quickly here, Stu can't maintain his "good stretches". Talbot should be on Team Canada too, Binnington over Talbot is a joke, it's only because Armstrong had to get his guy on the team some how.

I'm pretty neutral on Skinner. When he's on, he's solid, not great. When he's off, his physical limitations are obvious. He doesn't make too many glaring errors (which I'm sure his coach & teammates appreciate), but he's never really a difference maker unless the opposition plays a predictable game and our D play solid. Then Skinner will nearly always do what he's supposed to do, which is stop >90% of the stoppable stops and read the play well.

A guy like that kinda needs a counterfoil as a backup... somebody who may not be as consistent/tactical as Skinner but can get hot and wow you with an amazing save. Campbell would have been perfect if not for his struggles.

Blackwood, Talbot, etc... I don't really mind who, but not sold on Pickard. If we get another solid NHL-level 1B starter or 2A backup, we're going to get the best out of Skinner and will have a legit option for nights when he's struggling/off or just plain getting sniped.

Who knows... maybe Rodrigue is ready for an audition in H2 of the season?

There's some value to it. You have to keep in mind these HF diehards are watching every game for their home team. Not even "professional" analysts on TSN and SN are doing that, most of the time just talking out their ass on players which we see all the time when they give opinions on Oilers related things.

I remember doing the same exercise for Kulak when we got him. And there was mixed opinions from the Habs fanbase for sure, but still lots of positive things were said about Kulak that came to fruition. With Ekholm you'd hear nothing but good things from the Preds fanbase. If you have 30 people saying the same thing, I'd say you better give it a listen.

The caveat being that Folwer is playing for a terrible team and a terrible defensive team. In 15-16 you would have had 30 people here concurring that Justin Schultz had no business playing on a playoff team at all, but then he goes to the Penguins and wins a Stanley Cup playing a top 4 role and playing it well.

This obviously isn't universal, but talented players on shitty teams tend to look a look better when they go to good teams in a more secondary role.

Finding someone to push Skinner sounds good in practice but not really sure who the options are. Not really convinced that someone like Gibson for example is that much better than Pickard. And Skinner is barely an upgrade on Pickard (his highs are better but his lows are lower).

Then you have the cap space issue.

Either Skinner is your guy or he isn’t. Regardless of whatever I think it seems pretty clear that Skinner is their guy for better or worse.

Gibson is light years better than Pickard. Pickard is on a stacked team and is heavily sheltered and still isn’t 900. He would get absolutely waxed being the starter for 50 games for the ducks.

That being said I think Gibson is unrealistic. Paid a lot of money and doesn’t have the numbers to show for it the last couple of years. Blackwood is a low risk, potential high reward. I think there’s no chance he’s worse than both our goalies and there’s a really good chance he’s better than at least pickard.

So here is a different idea. Lets upgrade the third pair right now and leave the goaltending at the NHL level as is and toss our Bakersfield goalies to the wind and get 2 guys almost ready to break through. And lets also get a couple of guys for the future.

That's lazy team building. If Vegas followed this logic they don't win a Cup in 2023 because they wouldn't have even tried to bring in someone like Adin Hill.

But they weren't lazy, they were aggressive i bringing in multiple goalies, and that bet paid off massively with Hill going on a .930 heater through multiple playoff rounds and they won a Cup because of it.

Whoever made the call within the Vegas front office to bring in Hill should be given a massive raise.

Yeah a 50% retained Cam Fowler would be nice and I think it's a realistic way to improve the team. I know a lot of people think he sucks now but I'm willing to bet a veteran like him would thrive in Coffey's new defensive system while feeding the puck to Connor and Leon quite often.

Plus, if we were to win the cup and he raised it in an Oilers jersey instead of Taylor Hall, that would also be great just for the lolz.

I don't think the bar is high to upgrade on Pickard.

He can keep his head above water fine in spot duty, but if we need him for any more than that he'll fail. We need a better redundancy in net.

Yep. Not saying it’s impossible for Skinner to be the guy but no one can deny he goes though stretches where he is almost unplayable. We need a more reliable 2nd goalie that can potentially take the reins if needed.

What would realistically be the ask for Jusso Valimaki? I'm more inclined to go with someone younger that we can build with and is cost controlled into next season, then focus on getting a goalie.

I don't think the team defense is actually a weakness of this team at all.

For goalies I'm open to any one of Talbot, Gibson @50%, McKenzie Blackwood, Joel Blomqvist, Karel Vejmelka.

We definitely shouldn't be afraid to move Pickard if it means we're upgrading there. He's a solid backup but not the type of player or role you let hold you up from making an improvement.

I think he's a fine backup if you have an elite of the elite starter that will play 65 games in his sleep and be a lock to play well when it matters. Not the case here.

There's no reason to make a move on defence until the deadline. Team is humming along and winning games at a good pace after a bad start. The defence looks really good, and isn't giving up a ton of goals. Accumulate the cap space so that you can bring in a $5 million guy at the deadline, why are we trading for a second-third pairing tweener when the guys who are here are doing a good job?

Only move I could see prior to the deadline is Pickard replacement. Maybe a forward if they ever get tired of trotting out Derek Ryan every night.
