You've hated Draisaitl for years so you'll have to forgive me for dismissing your eye test.
I've bashed Drais poor play in past and will call him out again if his effort level drops down again. You may dismiss my eye test and keep Bouchard up with Makar and Hughes. Whatever floats your boat.

I mean Podkolzin/Kane/Arvidsson/Kapanen could easily be in the bottom-6 instead of Skinner and Nuge (especially if Janmark can play C long-term like he did tonight and for a stretch last year), and that would help, but I tend to agree.
One of the big problems is Nuge is 3rd line player these days. On pace for 46 points playing with Mcdavid is awful. Combine this with the fact he's soft as hell I'm kind of worried about our forwards now.

We're in serious need of one more top 6 player. Kane may be that guy, but that's most likely a pipe dream.

We have too many 3rd line forwards.....

I still wish Edmonton called San Jose about Blackwood (2 years older than Stu and makes less $$)

Min 20 games played and Blackwood is about 7th/22 in most metrics

2.87GAA 0.915%

Skinner is about 20th/22

2.93GAA 0.893%

Imagine just not having Jeff Skinners salary. Could have got Blackwood as a tandem if they took back Pickard or whatever.
Colorado paid a fortune for him.

Bouchard completely embarrassed Hughes in the playoffs. Fraud Norris winner.
Also Bouchard played 25 minutes last night against a Boston team that always gives the Oilers fits, and he did so on a leg that can't be 100%.

Some people's hatred of Bouchard is flat out embarrassing.

The analytics just don't make sense on this guy. Even last night he turned the puck over too much, it just didn't end up in our net.

He played poor and got demoted.

Even in the Ozone in the 3rd when he was driving the net with the puck on his stick in the slot he was too slow and got caught from behind. (it's nit picking, but a true elite offensive guy finishes that play)
He played 25:52, the most of any player for either team.

I'm sincerely not convinced eye testers watch the games.

Not sure what metrics you are looking at.. maybe just points.
Eye test says Bouchard is dumb as door knob many nights .. last night being a good example. Can compare him to Makar for anything more than offense which is usually a secondary assist on a McDrai magic moment.
Your eye test is awful. You were unironically one of the biggest Barrie>Bouchard guys here which is already a telltale sign that you don't know how to watch hockey. And to make matters worse you continued with that take last year while Bouchard was putting up a top 5 Norris finish season and one of the most dominant playoff performances in NHL history.

I don't really think he's better than either of them, though he's up there in that realm, and Makar has quietly had some GA issues for awhile now.

Hughes is a superstar though whether we like it or not in here. His WOWY is nuts, pretty much keeping Vancouver relevant single-handedly.

Kinda wish the coaching staff would just try RNH as the 3C and Henrique as the 4C.

Both guys have played as a 3/4th liners and this coming from someone who likes both.

Then just rolls the lines more.

This makes arguments that Bouchard is in the same tier as guys like Hughes and Makar feasible.

There's a lot that goes into being a good defencemen. Skating laps around the o-zone really fast is a small piece of the puzzle.
Bouchard is not in the same tier as Hughes and Makar. That is your bias showing. It's laughable to think he is.

I'll leave this Bouchard stuff alone. There is no point.

So this makes Bouchard better than Hughes?
Bouchard was unquestionably better than Hughes and really any defenseman besides maybe 2021-22 Cale Makar in the playoffs this century. And the main point was that he's one of the best defensemen in the world, just like Hughes. The funny part is if Quinn Hughes or Cale Makar played for the Edmonton Oilers, you would be talking about their giveaways or how they don't hit/clear the crease, because guess what? All elite defensemen make mistakes and often do so at a higher rate due to heavy workload/strong quality of competition, even Lidstrom. There's a reason why 1st line NHL forwards are so highly valued, because they can burn anyone on any given day.

Then again, I might have lost touch in how to identify bad defenseman these past few years. Unlike you Blues fans, I don't have a front row seat to actual defensive liabilities like Parayko and Krug.

That's the opinion of the dozens of Hockey Men voters that saw fit to have him finish 5th in Norris voting last year.

You're an eye tester that thought a guy that played 26 minutes got demoted. Forgive me for assuming you have f***in glaucoma or something.

If Avs called the Oilers asking for Bouchard for Makar, people would say no? Quite a take by some posters lol.
I think Makar is a slightly better player than Bouchard. But Bouchard at 4 million clears Makar at 9 million so hard it's not even funny (obviously this changes again whenever we see Bouchard and Makar's new contracts).

Perfectly said.

Can you imagine the whinging from some of the knuckle draggier parts of the fanbase if our #1 defenceman was a 5'10 stringbean that constantly looks like he's on the verge of tears and has a grand total of FIVE hits on the season?

I bet it would f***in STUN some people to learn that Bouchard is tied for the team lead in blocks this year, too.

Analytics generally show process and long term impact. Bouchard tilts the ice in the right direction when he's on the ice. The only thing stopping Bouchard from being considered in the Hughes-Makar level is he tends to make the "big mistake" too often, especially this season and on national TV. That doesn't show up in as much analytics because he genuinely plays well 85-90% of the time.

But that 10% of the time where he's making the big mistake is the reason he's left off Team Canada, you need a level of reliability in a short tournament. That "big mistake" doesn't have major impact in an 82 game season, but in a short tournament it can be the difference between Gold and 3rd/4th place.

That's actually a good idea. There is always Philp as well.

Upgrade 2RD and G.
