Could he though? I'd love to add him, hell I'd love to have him and Klim on a line together. I just don't think that Columbus moves him for anything that isn't an overpay.
Oh yes we would have to over pay number one and number two we need to do some other things first. However if you think about their attributes i really don't think you would want these guys out there together lol
Olivier can pass well enough to cycle but you know he passes to someone in scoring position every 20 or 30 or 40 games. He has a great shot if he has a half hour to get it off.
But yes he can drive the net and if you need someone to scramble an Eichel try to fly the zone he can do this.

The way I look at it, the decision to trade Ceci and accrue ~$4-5M in space for "better-than-Ceci" was made in the summer even prior to the offer sheets.

That strategy was a sound one at the time and predicated on an assumption that if Broberg was signed at $1.7M and became our "better than Ceci", then we'd have that accrued cap space available to spend elsewhere (noting here of course how much was accrued would have been much less with Broberg and Holloway eating $3M... but Broberg in particular would have been an asset to trade if he wasn't yet ready for full time top-4). Essentially the strategy was: invest just a bit, hope, or trade and buy later. Kind of the best of all worlds, contingency plans built in.

Once the offer sheets came in, in a way it blew up the "invest just a bit" strategy and management was not willing to up the ante to $4.6M. We can see now that they (health aside) were probably wrong to pass on that bet, but I can completely understand the rationale... $4.6M in cap space is was a certainty vs Broberg carried some risk. So now we were forced into the decision to "buy later" rather than "invest and hope, with no contingency".

And here we are, with the exception of Emberson not surprising and our offense underperforming, everything else is still kinda ticking along as per the plan. But if we don't right our ship, we are going to be forced to spend early and that isn't good. I give some leeway here... I don't think anybody thought we'd be near dead-last in offense.

To the bolded... that's definitely a creative one, but one that sounds expensive and you end up depleting depth. Having a Kane or Skinner on the third line for the playoffs is a luxury we've sorta been banking on.

If these players get their act together, we may still be able to do that.

Yeah, I don’t disagree. My thoughts were all in, burn the boats, win now, damn the torpedoes and go for broke. Certainly risky.

Ceci isn't it. Broberg was a risk to sign to his deal. Foegele outpriced himself from here and McLeod has proven not to be a playoff guy.

Or a regular season guy.

Mystifying to me how anyone can claim he's the magic man now because he managed to score 4 goals. That's what he did his entire time here. Score zero in 20, get 4 in 6, then end the year with 10-15 on the back of periodic streaks.

Literally nothing has changed. Scores 4 games in a row, then wouldn't you know it he hasn't scored in the last 5. Ditto for Foegele, who follows this same streaky MO.

We all have the memory of an ant apparently.

Jeff Marek saying the Oilers aren't panicking and would like to get younger and add more forward speed...and a 2nd pair D.....you mean like Mcleod, Holloway, Foegele, and Broberg/Ceci? This team is hilarious.

Pretty apparent the front office is still a complete shitshow. This organization just never f***ing learns.

We had one. St Louis wrecked it

Then they better find a way to fix it. I'm beyond tired of hearing every year that the Oilers still need a top four D and then excuses are made on why it can't happen as other teams somehow always find a way to acquire those pieces.

The D has been OK aside from the PK where the goalies can't make a save ever.

I'm honestly not as hung up on this point as some, Emberson's advanced metrics are quite good too.

We're not losing games because of Stetcher and Emberson.

Forward core being in an emo-funk, special teams, and zero growth in Skinner's game (thus remaining a glorified back up goalie) are the primary culprits.

Many teams only have 3 good D and then they make due with 2-3 replacement tier guys. Look at Florida, Forsling and Ekblad are notable, but past that they have no one special and their bottom 3 is bargain basement options.

Dallas top 2 D are good but after that it's nothing special, Dumba has been a nothing add, 0 points, 0 goals, 0 rating in 7 games.

It is the speed of all these 4-5 players that is missed. They don't need to produce a ton, all of them are fast and have teams on their heels, other teams have a real hard time with it.

Our older, slower team. Much easier to shut down and keep up with. It's not complicated.

#1 loss of youth and speed
#2 missing a solid top 4 D
#3 not learning from their mistakes, think Philp and Cags are better options than Ryan/Perry. Those guys are too old, slow and are not every day NHL players any more. Even today, Oilers management not learning their lesson. Prioritize vets
#4 Our new 14 million dollar player is getting schooled by 8-11 mil players on too many nights.
#5 Instead of rolling 4 lines, 4th line gets 8 minutes, bottom pairing D gets 10 minutes. Lets over task our top guys to play 23-28 minutes a night. Eks is 34, on a back to back you play him almost 29 minutes as the team was losing. You are going to wear out your top players doing this.

We’ve all known since the offer sheet that it can’t happen until closer to the deadline due to the cap. Why would anything be different right now?

Stauffer saying he wonders if what the Oilers need is a top 4 puck moving Dman who is not necessarily a right handed one but a left handed one who can play the right side.

Then proceeded to say “I wonder if Stan Bowman works on that in the next couple of weeks”.

They definitely don't need that, like at all, but the only player who fits Baghdad Bob's description is Provorov and he was talking about him before this so...... okay I guess, if Bowman wants to stake his reputation on a "puck moving" defenseman with 3 points this year, he can do that.

It will be better than nothing and shouldn't cost as much given his contract, but no clue how he plans to fit that in even at double retention and I'd personally rather spend the assets required on someone who knows where their end is and how to defend it over Provorov.

Sounds like Provorov.

Too much panic here to address all points, but the play of the "$14M guy" is about the only reason we even have the 6 wins we do. Especially when McDavid is playing the worst hockey of his career.

All those points but not playing D. It was his man on the Vegas winner last night. As mentioned Drai 23 mins, Bouch 27+, Eks 28+ mins on a back to back against NJ. One day break then last night, all of those 3 guys are on the ice. Too many minutes, guys get tired. For 14 million I want good D, not just points.

No panic as we should be a playoff team.

Drai has the best defensive metrics of his career so far this year haha.

Well as long as Nurse is on that 2nd pairing we need someone that can pass the puck out of the zone since that is definitely not his strength.
