It wasn’t just Strudwick. There were many posters on this board questioning his decision. Course we were told how the rebuilding situation in Detroit was going to ‘ideal’ for him and how he was finally going to a team where he was ‘wanted’. That lasted all of 33 games.

@McDNicks17 had a good post recently that summed it up well. There’s almost nobody on this board who didn’t like Kositin and want him back at reasonable money. But the reality is that other teams with more money to spend can offer overpays. It’s hard to put ourselves in a player’s shoes and say we’d leave money on the table. But it’s easy to say that after I took the money and went elsewhere, I wouldn’t come back to town, put on the Oilers jersey and pretend I’d always been loyal to the crest.
I don't blame Vinny or Kostin as they are both depth players and took roughly double what we would've offered.

Somewhere on Uranus
Strudwick called this. He said it was better for his career to take less money and stay in Edmonton and continue to develop.

Here is the thing, The NHLPA are trying to stop players from taking home town discounts. Allan Walsh is doing a lot of grunt work behind the scenes to get all agents to press the players to get the most they can regardless of where

I remember the risk that Hossa took trying to win a cup. he took a cheap 1 year deal instead of a massive long term deal.

Hossa signed that 15 year deal where we all pointed to the exact moment he would go on the LTIR and he did

Hossa went short on term with Detroit but the one-year deal was $7.5 million ... in 2008-09. He tapped out with career earnings of $97 million. He got his Cups but Marion always collected his bank along the way.

No surprisingly young players who haven't achieved financial security opt for money first in their decision making. In some cases, they look for opportunity and the money follows.

I just remember that it was a big discount and risk relative to his play at the time.

On Oilers Now, Bob Stauffer said he sees moving 2 second round picks and another pick as the way to get a top 4 Dman in Edmonton. He also said that he sees Philly and Columbus as likely trade partners and, perhaps, even a left handed Dman (who can play the right side) as who we may add.

That means Risto or Provorov at least for now

He had generational financial wealth secured already. The $7.45 million was still a raise from his multi-year Penguin contract at $6 million x 4. I loved the player but Hossa didn't necessarily sacrifice for a one year run in Detroit.

Then I guess it was the risk of not signing long term. Yes he had a lot of wealth at the time but he was in his prime and how often did/o guys that were impact players at the top of their game take a 1 year deal?

Whoever we get for that price better have some term at a reasonable cap.

Edit-Provorov is an UFA at season's end and Ristolainen has 2 more years after this one. So Provorov would likely be a pure rental. Olivier is an UFA at season's end as well. Man would I love to get him on the Oilers.

So 3 examples out of dozens or maybe even hundreds definitely shows that it isn't very common. A guy like Desharnais had to grab what he could because he was a very late bloomer.
All the younger ex-Oilers left to secure their financial security and for some opportunity was tied to the equation. Opportunity also present ability to chase financial security.

I never said any differently. My only problem with Kostin is that mere months later he was back in town wearing his old Oilers jersey while signed to another team. Clown move.

I think that it was a nice move to show support for his old team but I wouldn't have been too happy about it if I was a Sharks player.

Don't follow Philly much but CBJ are quite happy with Provorov. If he did become available the battle for his 3 months of service would be extreme. A relatively asset poor Oilers might be in tough. Even non playoff teams with lots of cap (that could resign him) would show significant interest me thinks.
Imagine Vancouver for example getting Provorov on the second pair with Meyers pushing down Soucy to stablize the 3rd pair and getting Demko back 20 ish games before season's end. They would potentially fix their two biggest weaknesses and could be a very tough out.

Mentioning Vancouver I find the news about Kravtsov so interesting. Sounds like he is working hard coming back and working defensively. That would be such a big change in attitude. A two way power forward with potential like that. Odds are not high but I would sure like to have that kind of opportunity in our corral. Gonna check in on Traktor's progression occasionally this year.

Tonight Devils play the Flames and on Nov. 4 we play the Devils. Excellent opportunity to look at the defenseman i been touting.
I can't speak to Kovacevic being good enough or not, but I'm a fan of that style of move, IMO there is a real possibility we need to add 2 d-men prior to the deadline, not sold on any of our bubble D being playoff caliber, I'm more or less writing off Stecher and Dermott as #7D, with only Emberson being a TBD if he can improve enough by the time playoffs roll around.

Our proper D fix is almost certainly going to need to wait till the deadline, but I'd like to run 2 guys right now who can compete for that #6D spot and I think we can reduce wear and tear on our group by getting some better results out of the Nurse pairing. At present I think a number of teams 7th best d-man is as good or better than our 5th best d-man.

Cheering for a team is one thing but draping yourself in another teams colors after you just signed a contract with a competitive team is a step too far.
Just imagine if the Oilers signed a player and then we see that player on TV, days later, in another arena draped in his former teams colors cheering them on.

This place would have a meltdown.
