And if they are in the market for one, it should only be after they’ve called up Philp and played him for the next 20+ games and he’s shown he can’t handle it. Derek Ryan is playing less than 10 minutes a game. Playing Philp those minutes is not going to make or break the team.
Yep. The move is to call up Philp after Christmas and give him a month with the big club. waive Ryan if you have to, that guy's not getting claimed.

My reluctance is actually more on the team than the players. I feel like Philp had a great preseason and can’t get games. I think Jarventie is pushing a rock up a hill. The Oilers don’t seem to like giving their young players much opportunity.

We need an injury or something to someone that plays that role. Nothing major, but for Ryan or someone else to just miss a few weeks. In a weird way injuries are kind of needed at certain points to see what you have deeper in your roster (assuming the injuries aren't for too long or for key players). I don't think they want to yo yo any young players back and forth between the AHL and NHL, and based on how things ended with Holloway and Broberg I think that makes sense.

I don't think its a matter of not wanting to give them looks, its more a matter of how we can get them up here for an extended look without using cap space or losing someone on waivers. I've been in the camp of dismissing Ryan and saying "whatever, just waive him," but he does have value as a depth piece even if its just for his right shot face-off ability. Little things like that might matter down the line at some point and I'd hate to lose it just because.

I mean to be fair Philps season in the AHL hasn’t been screaming “call me up”.
Hard to judge his results, it’s probably more about how he’s playing vs what nis numbers are. Kind of a weird situation, he’s playing top 6 with Bakos best offensive talent but he’s really auditioning for a 4th line role that is completely different to the type of role he’s playing in Bako.

Colin Chaulk is a terrible development coach. The powerplay is being run through Seth f***ing Griffith. You have a top OFFENSIVE PROSPECT.. a TOP 10 PICK on your roster. You should be running the PP through him.

Also why the hell is Wanner on third pair? He has AHL vets and his bed buddy Dineen playing so much while Wanner plays meaningless hockey.

Does this guy care about development or just winning?

A lot of AHL coaches care more about the latter because it lets them show OTHER teams they might be NHL ready. Also, this usually applies more with teams that aren't owned by the parent club.

Which makes the way Chaulk handling prospects a head scratcher given that Katz owns pretty much all Oilers related things top down. Unless this is a Keith Gretzky mandate...

I would not consider it, I have never seen a d-man with a bigger gap in between their offensive ability and their defensive ability, his defensive give a shit is just not where it needs to be to fit on a team with SC aspirations.
That’s the thing that annoys me with Bouchard, yes he makes mistakes it happens. But don’t give up on the play, chase and make them hear foot steps and maybe rush/panic their shot etc. To just coast when there was opportunity to atleast give some stick taps in pursuit is just being lazy.

What's keeping Savoie from the NHL is not a lack offense. He has to learn a couple of things.

One thing I don't like is Wanner being on the bottom pairing over Josh Brown. Kemp makes some sense on why he's on the top RHD pairing, but Brown over Wanner on the top four RHD is dumb to say the least. That being said, I was never a fan of Chaulk to begin with. Woodcroft got his rightful criticisms up here as an NHL coach, but he did great as the farm team coach IMO.

I did like Woody in the A. Do you think Colin is making the decisions on where to play the personnel longer term by himself or wood the development coaches have a major input?

I place it firmly on Chaulk. Not a fan of him. If @McTonyBrar isn't wrong regarding the PP being run by Griffith, then all I can say is WTF when we have Savoie there who should be getting all the offensive minutes he can get. Griffith is nothing more than just an AHL player that's not an NHL regular.

Imagine the Oilers were lucky enough to pick up Fabbro off waivers or traded for him at 50% off
AHHH yes. Wish i had ask out that girl in my 1st year of Uni.
But I didn't.

Hopefully Bowman will move access things more quickly now.
Or perhaps the deal now is to fix the third pair and not the second. A stronger third pair (leaving Kulak on the second) could take more Defensive zone starts. And ease the pressure up a bit on Nurse as well. Cost and cap would be much less allowing for a goalie move now as well.

Marek says (8:45 mark) this past summer two other teams tried to recoup their own picks and put together the compensation package to offersheet both Broberg and Holloway.
One of those teams was Calgary. Go f*** yourself, Conroy.
