The Oilers allow the 3rd least amount of shots and high danger zone chances in the league. The defense isn't perfect but they're doing a pretty good job.

The problem is horrid goaltending. Period.

I am posting this again so it is not skipped about Blackwood. Adding in PK

Blackwood is on a bad team (Min 9 games played) 28 goalies on this list

SJ - Sharks allowed 174 hdc, only Pitts is worse. Sharks are also 5th in hd save %, EDM 22nd

EDM is top 10 with 116 HDCA. #1 is Vancouver at 100 allowed

Goals saved above expected - Blackwood 12th / Skinner 27th

Goals Saved Above expected per 60 - Blackwood 11th / Skinner 28th

Save % Above Expected - Blackwood 12th / Skinner 27th

GAA Better Than Expected - Blackwood 12th / Skinner 28th

YUP, Blackwood is no good lol.

Ive said it before, think Blackwood could be a bit of a sleeper in our system. I’d run him 1 and put skinner as 2 until proven otherwise.

Kulak Emberson look like a solid 3rd pairing, get a solid 2RD and a lot of the goaltending gets better as the chances should be fewer. Kane coming back solves the LW issue and I believe we will pickup a physical bottom 6 winger and Philp should be a regular come the TDL.

There are no starters available, Nashville not trading Saros after just signing him to 8 years and we can’t fit him in under the cap anyway.

I don’t see a world where we don’t ride and die with Skinner as the go to guy but even in playoffs he will need to be spelled off for a few games at a time as his game degrades with overplaying.

If he can solve his consistency issues and we improve the D and defensive play we should be ok.

How many fewer chances can the oilers give up? There defensive play has been fine.

The goaltending has not

Blackwood being better than skinner and being a good goalie are two different discussions

So the question posed was who would be a goalie you would target and how would you go get him… Blackwood seems plausible and probably is better than Skinner. You disagree.

So if not him, who?

That's this season. He's played 9 games. The last 4 before this:

2023-2024
Blackwood: -9.27 GSAA, 89th/98 goalies
Skinner: 0.03 GSAA, 46th/98 goalies

2022-2023
Blackwood: -5.00 GSAA, 83rd/107 goalies
Skinner: 14.28, 9th/107 goalies

2021-2022

Blackwood: -11.16, 112th/119 goalies
Skinner: 0.08, 62nd/119 goalies (only 13 games)

2020-2021

Blackwood: -3.25, 74th/98 goalies.

He has been in the league for 6 years now, and his established level of play is a below replacement level player. He routinely is well below the mean in terms of GSAA, and has had ugly numbers even on some good New Jersey teams. Outside of a few brief flashes, it looks like Blackwood has no business being on an NHL roster.

Skinner is having a brutal season this year, but bigger picture, he had one outstanding season, and the other two have been pretty average. He's certainly not a world beater, but I'm absolutely not betting on Mackenzie Blackwood to be better than him.

Another name for a guy who's really been knocking on the door for a while, Jet Greaves in Columbus.

At this point, bring him in and see if he has something.

Not hard to find a goalie that's better than Skinner. It's going to cost some assets to get the player, of course. Were you expecting to get them for free?

Once we get a legit starter, he's better than adding another top 4 D.

A cheaper and a slightly better goalie than Stuart is also good as we can spend the extra cap saving we get from moving Stuart for a top 4 Dman
