A cheaper and a slightly better goalie than Stuart is also good as we can spend the extra cap saving we get from moving Stuart for a top 4 Dman
It's why a guy like Jet Greaves, Joel Hofer or Brandon Bussi might make low risk high reward candidates.

Blackwood is on a bad team (Min 9 games played) 28 goalies on this list

SJ - Sharks allowed 174 hdc, only Pitts is worse. Sharks are also 5th in hd save %, EDM 22nd

EDM is top 10 with 116 HDCA. #1 is Vancouver at 100 allowed

Goals saved above expected - Blackwood 12th / Skinner 27th

Goals Saved Above expected per 60 - Blackwood 11th / Skinner 28th

Save % Above Expected - Blackwood 12th / Skinner 27th

GAA Better Than Expected - Blackwood 12th / Skinner 28th

YUP, Blackwood is no good lol.
In general I wipe my ass with stats on this small of a sample size, but that is doubly true for goalies who are prone to running hot and cold.

yes, do you think his stats will be like this all season?
if so, based on what?
The guy is hot and cold and the team doesn’t play as strong in front of him, because they are concerned about the next shot being “the one”. I vote for making a change but I’m not just jumping at the next warm body that might be available . If they can get a goalie and a top 4 D I’d be over the moon.

If the players aren't playing perfect hockey, his stat isn't climbing. He will have his usual 5 good games out of the year but does that actually tell the whole story. For as young as he is, I've think he's peaked. If Dubas is stupid enough to trade Blomqvist for Stuart, I'd do that trade all day. Run with the cheaper, younger guy who has a much higher potential

That's this season. He's played 9 games. The last 4 before this:

2023-2024
Blackwood: -9.27 GSAA, 89th/98 goalies
Skinner: 0.03 GSAA, 46th/98 goalies

2022-2023
Blackwood: -5.00 GSAA, 83rd/107 goalies
Skinner: 14.28, 9th/107 goalies

2021-2022

Blackwood: -11.16, 112th/119 goalies
Skinner: 0.08, 62nd/119 goalies (only 13 games)

2020-2021

Blackwood: -3.25, 74th/98 goalies.

He has been in the league for 6 years now, and his established level of play is a below replacement level player. He routinely is well below the mean in terms of GSAA, and has had ugly numbers even on some good New Jersey teams. Outside of a few brief flashes, it looks like Blackwood has no business being on an NHL roster.

Skinner is having a brutal season this year, but bigger picture, he had one outstanding season, and the other two have been pretty average. He's certainly not a world beater, but I'm absolutely not betting on Mackenzie Blackwood to be better than him.
I care what is going on now. Not what happened a couple years ago. One goalie is playing good behind a shit stink D.

The other one is playing shit stink in front of a very good defensive team

Goalie on lottery teams vs goalie sheltered by one of the best teams
I swear people will try to bend any stat to prop up big boy Skinner

yes, let's spend assets and cap space on a guy who may or may not be as good as Skinner

great plan
How hard is it to replace a guy who is dead last or almost dead last on a lot of metrics. LOL. Christ

I feel like I am in some bizarro world where people actually stick up for this big clown in net

Our goaltending has got so below standard, that people are propping up a guy who sucks.

I don;t even know when this guy got "hot?"

When the Oilers had to play NJ Devils type D 24/7 and went on that 16 game tear? lol

There was a game against NY and NSH where I remember him playing well. Not even superman. We are just so used to sh** tending, that when he plays how he SHOULD, people waive the pom poms.

I said other because I couldn’t pick both a starting goalie and a 2nd pairing defender. Obviously the goalie is the more stressing issue when it comes to the regular season but as the playoffs begin I think the second pairing defender would be equally as important for this club to go the distance and lift that cup in June.

I guess there's risk in a move like this but I would also go for it. Even pay some asset for it. I think this would settle the goalie situation for a long time. Pittsburgh seems to settle for some low returns (only 3rd for Eller) anyway.

Voted based on need and probability to acquire under our cap situation so went with 2RD as out most critical but also fillable need.

Kulak Emberson look like a solid 3rd pairing, get a solid 2RD and a lot of the goaltending gets better as the chances should be fewer. Kane coming back solves the LW issue and I believe we will pickup a physical bottom 6 winger and Philp should be a regular come the TDL.

There are no starters available, Nashville not trading Saros after just signing him to 8 years and we can’t fit him in under the cap anyway.

I don’t see a world where we don’t ride and die with Skinner as the go to guy but even in playoffs he will need to be spelled off for a few games at a time as his game degrades with overplaying.

If he can solve his consistency issues and we improve the D and defensive play we should be ok.
This is what swayed my vote. Skinner will get better with better D help...gotta cut down on those high danger chances.

The positive Skinner has had on the team is they play much better defence, they are terrified to let any shot against on net.

Imagine a team unafraid of average shots getting behind their goalie.

Looks like the Blues are in free fall mode without Broberg. Considering they f***ed us, maybe we can squeeze a deal for Parayko if they go into a rebuild.
I like this thinking. Young warrior. Proud you have done us all. I'd say make an offer for Holloway... 750,000 retained while we're at it too 😄

Is this a serious post?

EDmonton is top 10 in least HD chances and have allowed about 5 total the last 2 games combined.....

Vancouver is #1 with 100 allowed and Edmonton has allowed 116

Should we cut it down to allowing 1 HD chance per game?

OH yeah, Stuart Sinner is also last in Medium save % above expected lolll

In all seriousness, that Pickard extension kind of looks like a deal designed to ward off waiver claims, doesn't it?

Perhaps it was always in the cards that the Oilers would wait out the goalie market to find an affordable split starter to run with Skinner.

Need to get that partner for Nurse ...a good quality defensive D.
Then get rid of Shwartzy.
Then bring in your tender.

How about Dan Vladar?

Podkolzin may not be putting up the numbers, but man, has he been a bright light on the forecheck. Probably the most consistent puck retriever on the team at the moment.
He's so much stronger and more physical than I ever thought he was a player, that physicality and strength opens space for Draisaitl and Arvidsson, and we can see that in the effectiveness of the line as a whole.

He's also decent defensively and can kill penalties, if he could put up some numbers he'd be perfect, but he's still a great fit.

Can't say we didn't have goalies when our backup were Anton Forsberg and Stolarz. Our GM/coach were just stupid to not play them

My issue with this is Stolarz from 6 years ago isn't the same man now. A good team with a good goaltending coach in Florida really built him up and turned him into an NHL goalie. Anaheim also helped his development. Meanwhile Edmonton is where goalies go to die.
