That's a great trade for Florida. They REALLY needed a RD after Montour left and Ekblad's pending free agency. In a limited market, Jones is a solid pickup for them for not that high of an asset cost.
I think Jones would have looked good next to Slavin for at least 2 seasons, but Carolina doesn’t have the cap space right now to fit him. Would have been an offseason move.

honestly i think that's flat out BAD for Florida. Even if Knight is never what he was projected to be and that pick is #32 Jones is not worth that much with that contract at this point with his play the last 2-3 years.
That’s a $7M Jones now, which is less than Florida has been paying Ekblad to try and survive to the end of his contract.

Nah, I think this is a great buy-low risk for Florida. I will never doubt Florida's best-in-hockey pro scouts, and considering his very successful Columbus days with a famously hard-ass Tortorella, he could be a great systematic fit with the Panthers, especially at only a 7M cap hit in a rising environment.

Would be interesting if they win another cup and a few years from now it ends up the cost was the two best goalies in the league (Knight and Levi) dueling over the Vezina

At $7.5 mil for 5 years that’s Brady Sjkei money under last years cap. If he still stinks playing for Florida it’ll be bad, but I get the feeling he will be fine at worst with a team that isn’t a total tire fire.

Florida likes big defensemen on their bottom pairings. Losing ekman-Larssen (sp?) to Leafs has made them less physical and I suspect they want that for the playoff run

Matty Chuck goes on LTIR. I think I’ve read this story before…

At 7M for 6 years, they're playing Jones on the 1st or 2nd pair long-term, no question. What this trade does do is move Kulikov to the bottom-pair, where he's well-above replacement, instead of over-slotting him on the 2nd pair.

What does Tampa have that Buffalo would want for Tuch? Lightning have a very shallow prospect pool and picks won't be that valuable.

Isaac Howard and a 1st?

Buffalo from all accounts doesn't even appear to be looking for prospects or picks at this point. I would think this is maybe a 3 team deal if anything from that standpoint alone.
