Rumors Proposals Thread Post Deadline Apocalypse 3rd Times A Charm Stu Stu Stupider Management May the Schwartz be with You

My solution would be a drastic overhaul of the front office that insists on hiring friends and has been a failure for the past few decades. The one that can't draft, trade, or sign players to good contracts. The one that has always seen McDavid as a ticket to a Cup and has failed to put a competent roster around him.

Bill Zito was an up and coming GM and we were reportedly talking to him. Then Ken Holland became available and the rest if history. I don't feel like this team has ever done any real due diligence when it comes to hirings. Hindsight is obviously 20/20 but perhaps hiring McDavid's old agent as POHO was not a great idea and we're paying dearly for it right now.

Katz needs to clean the rot out of the org but he'd never do that, so it is what it is. I suppose he's more concerned with making money than winning Stanley Cups.
Yes we are indeed! But this move was strictly about getting McDavid re-signed. The rest is all trickle-down and secondary.

I just realized Dallas has been less than mid with Rantanen. They needed a Dman not a forward. I think they needed a guy like Jake Walman.

I'm glad we stole him
when you get a new player, things don't always click right away, if ever, look at Arvidsson and J Skinner. Dallas has Miro Heiskanen coming back, probably a top 5 D in the league, they and their D, will be fine. I like Walman, and I'm glad the Oilers traded for him. But if I had the choice between Walman or Heiskanen, there is no comparison.

Gotta wonder if McDavid will bring two of his buddies to the Oilers in the offseason.

Sam Bennett and Aaron Ekblad
I'd love it, but don't see it happening.

Panthers have like 77m tied up next year, Samoskevich as the only notable RFA, then those guys. If the cap goes up to 95m, that's 18 million for basically those 3, backup G, and maybe a couple depth guys.

They could go 2 for Samoskevich, 5.5 for Bennett, 7 for Ekblad, 1 for a backup G, with a couple mill leftover for some extra bodies. Could those guys get more elsewhere? Probably, but Florida is a premier destination, and it's not like we can offer much more than that.

This is what I said! I get Heiskanen is out but it’s basically him and Harley and some chaff.

They should have invested in defense. Their offense was fine.

That’s not the choice though. They have Heiskanen, Harley, and Lindell I guess although I’m not super impressed by him. The rest of their d is not good.

Before getting injured Heiskanen was producing at a 41-point pace, a significant dip from the 69-point pace his previous 2 seasons.
I have doubts he'll jump back right into being elite when he's healthy after missing half a year. Certainly won't be playing like a top-5 D.

Bennett's contract sounds like it's going get a bit silly. Listening to the PDOcast they were predicting it could go as high as $9m AAV on the open market. Someone's going to be making a big mistake.

Stauffer said today on his show that he fully expects the Oilers to add at least a 1B in the Summer.

Seravalli said how about a full on #1 Goalie?

Gibson wants to be an Oiler so bad

I'm really happy that we are hearing this.

I know everyone was upset that we weren't able to get a goalie at the deadline and I've been pushing for one all season. However, I've calmed down as as started crossing names off the list. Their just wasnt a lot available and Anaheim got greedy. Gibson is still a risk and we can't afford to overpay him on both cap and assets.

We missed the chance to address the problem earlier in the year. You weren't going to send out during the offseason after making it to the conference finals. I think that he needs to elevate his stock in the playoffs or he's packing his bags this off season.

I do think Edmonton will be in a better situation to take on more of Gibsons cap (maybe 5M?) to bring down the acquisition cost. We can probably find a home for Arvidsson and use some of that money towards a goalie.

If goaltending costs us a cup yet again heads should roll. We needed a goalie this season too.

It was mindblowing how the media, and many on here, seemed to totally ignore the fact that Skinner was mostly mediocre in the playoffs. You don't get to a .901 over 23 games without having many bad performances. That Dallas series earned him a lot of clout, but one great series doesn't make up for collapses in three out of six rounds over two postseasons. Even Akira Schmid had one great series against an elite goalie (Shesterkin) and look where he is now...

I was willing to give Skinner another chance this season due to the experience he accumulated and the hope that it might make him better...but by late November (when he was near the bottom of the league in GSAx) I think they definitely could've swapped him for Blackwood one for one and been much better off today.

I was pleased to hear Seravalli tear apart Bob's "but he's only 26" narrative today.

Did you hear MacTavish in the next segment after? They were continuing the discussion of Skinner and his lack of effectiveness and his poor positioning on 2 of the NJD goals against, when this nugget came out.

“… it’s a discussion for Schwartzie. He knows a lot about goaltending and he is a very good goaltending coach.”

I generally like MacT but GD you aren’t even on payroll anymore, Craig! You won’t hurt Katz’s feeling by being honest and forthright.

Schwartz’s water carriers are everywhere.

Ducks asked for too much. Feels like it’s going to be like Markstrom with the Flames (wanted out earlier but management f***ed around)
If Pat Verbeek was waiting for a Markstrom type package, he's an idiot. Cutting your loses and doing a favor for your longest serving player in Gibson isn't a bad move. It's a move that brings back good karma and good relationship with the GMs around the league.

The Oilers paid a 1st for Henrique. That was an overpay. The Ducks should have returned us a favor.

With that said, Oilers should have at least try to get Soderblom for Pickard+
