I just realized Dallas has been less than mid with Rantanen. They needed a Dman not a forward. I think they needed a guy like Jake Walman.
I'm glad we stole him

Yes we are indeed! But this move was strictly about getting McDavid re-signed. The rest is all trickle-down and secondary. My solution would be a drastic overhaul of the front office that insists on hiring friends and has been a failure for the past few decades. The one that can't draft, trade, or sign players to good contracts. The one that has always seen McDavid as a ticket to a Cup and has failed to put a competent roster around him.
Bill Zito was an up and coming GM and we were reportedly talking to him. Then Ken Holland became available and the rest if history. I don't feel like this team has ever done any real due diligence when it comes to hirings. Hindsight is obviously 20/20 but perhaps hiring McDavid's old agent as POHO was not a great idea and we're paying dearly for it right now.
Katz needs to clean the rot out of the org but he'd never do that, so it is what it is. I suppose he's more concerned with making money than winning Stanley Cups.
If they're that scared of McDavid leaving then he's already gone. I understand it's important to keep him happy but doing that at the expense of the team is stupid.Yes we are indeed! But this move was strictly about getting McDavid re-signed. The rest is all trickle-down and secondary.
when you get a new player, things don't always click right away, if ever, look at Arvidsson and J Skinner. Dallas has Miro Heiskanen coming back, probably a top 5 D in the league, they and their D, will be fine. I like Walman, and I'm glad the Oilers traded for him. But if I had the choice between Walman or Heiskanen, there is no comparison.I just realized Dallas has been less than mid with Rantanen. They needed a Dman not a forward. I'd love it, but don't see it happening.Gotta wonder if McDavid will bring two of his buddies to the Oilers in the offseason.
Sam Bennett and Aaron Ekblad
If he signs elsewhere, Sam Bennett is going to own one of the riskier long-term contracts in the NHL. Ekblad, too.Gotta wonder if McDavid will bring two of his buddies to the Oilers in the offseason.

This is what I said! I get Heiskanen is out but it’s basically him and Harley and some chaff.I just realized Dallas has been less than mid with Rantanen. They needed a Dman not a forward. I think they needed a guy like Jake Walman.

That’s not the choice though. They have Heiskanen, Harley, and Lindell I guess although I’m not super impressed by him. The rest of their d is not good.when you get a new player, things don't always click right away, if ever, look at Arvidsson and J Skinner. Panthers have like 77m tied up next year, Samoskevich as the only notable RFA, then those guys. If the cap goes up to 95m, that's 18 million for basically those 3, backup G, and maybe a couple depth guys.
They could go 2 for Samoskevich, 5.5 for Bennett, 7 for Ekblad, 1 for a backup G, with a couple mill leftover for some extra bodies. Could those guys get more elsewhere? Probably, but Florida is a premier destination, and it's not like we can offer much more than that.
I swear we have the dumbest talent evaluation in the league
Ekblad should be fine as long as he’s smarter with using the juice. If he signs elsewhere, Sam Bennett is going to own one of the riskier long-term contracts in the NHL. Ekblad, too.
