How is that a #3 goalie???
After the playoffs they'll be looking for a #1 goalie.

That's sort of the plan with this approach, you have a heavy top-6 and you try to get "enough" out of your bottom-6 at cheap tickets. It's not perfect, but the top-6 is the go to for winning games, if we're being honest, so you lean on them.@Jimmi McJenkins @Canovin
Yeah... Ok, theoretically possible, but seems like a fantasy-fan stretch. Hard to imagine them jettisoning Henrique, or getting rid of Kane cleanly for example.
That bottom six is SUPER thin. Yes, way thinner than what we should have by the time playoffs roll around this year. A $1.5M 3C that just materializes via UFA is going to be... not a contributor.
And we still wouldn't have a goalie unless we get exceptionally lucky at $3M. Who's going to sign for that? Jake Allen? Vladar? Ugh...
Not really the approach I would take... but then again there are exactly zero difference-making goalies set to hit UFA, so we're going to have to actually trade for a good one (a scary thought in itself) or settle yet again for scraps.

Totally, and it's why you just steer away from them, lean on the "stars" and hope you have kids come along to be cheap and effective as well. The Oilers have also done a decent job dumpster diving over the past few years. Just have run into trouble with the middle class of players making $3-5M.

That phrase gives me PTSD.As far as roster planning goes, I think it makes a lot of sense to just avoid the middle class of player in UFA. They don't often exceed expectations, but are at high risk of falling backwards. If we're loaded in the top 6 and stable on D, we can survive with cheap bottom 6 players and keep our powder dry until the deadline.
Oilers in a serious need for a third fiddle. Pitts added Phil Kessel and won another 2 cups. Washington added Kuznetsov and won a cup. LA added Jeff Carter and Mike Richards to Kopitar and won 2 cups. Hossa to Chicago to help out Kane and Toews and won 3 cups
Not sure if it's Marner but the Oilers need another big time player.
ya a net "savings" of 700k...not that muchOilers almost finished with the Milan Lucic fiasco. James Neal's buyout finally off the books in a month. So, we'll acquire nearly an extra 2 mill for cap. Unfortunately, we still have the Campbell stain for another 3 years, and it goes up another 1 million this year. Of course, there could be more buyouts coming this off season.
Guess we'd have to turf Janmark and Emberson too? Idk, it's a lot of turnover for 1 guy especially when we had quite a volatile summer last year. I've wanted Marner, but idk if it's realistic.Marner would cost 13 minimum, the Oilers could do it but you'd basically have to gut the bottom 6 and bridge Bouchard to a 2 year deal. I only entertain this because they were willing to go after Rantanen for probably the same money.
Marner (13) McDavid (12.5) Hyman (5.5)
RNH (5.125) Drai (14) Savoie (0.9)
Kostin (1) blank (1.5) Podkolzin (1)
Kapanen (1) Philp (1) Brown (1)
Ek (6) Bouchard (8)
Nurse (9.25) Walman (3.4)
Kulak (2.7) blank (1)
blank (0.9)
Goalie (3)
Back Up (1)
Campbell buyout (2.3)
= 95.15 ... just a bit under the projected 95.5 cap.
You would have to get rid of Henrique, Arvidsson, Kane cleanly (no buy outs) and let Frederic walk.
The bottom 6 is thinner, but really not that much different from the bottom 6 we have now, as is the bottom 6 doesn't do much minus Perry who's really old.
Because Alberta has lower taxes than Ontario, at roughly 13 mill/year he'd make approx 725k more per year here but presumably loses that 8th year.
While goaltending was a huge help for those teams. A guy like Buchnevich(last year version) could have been the deciding the factor if we had him last playoffs.Pitts had Murray (who was elite during his time there especially during the b2b cup wins) GAA 2.18/.921 save%, Washington had Holtby with GAA 2.13/926 save %, LA had Quick GAA 2.31/.921 save % , Chicago had Crawford GAA 2.38/.918 save %.
The Oilers can add all of those players you listed, but as long as Skinner/Pickard are in net here, it won't matter. I have no confidence in our tandem taking us deep into the playoffs this season.
Team desperately needs to acquire a better goalie during the off season. Absolutely criminal that the management decided to spend another upcoming playoffs of McDrai in their primes with all hopes of the winning the Stanley cup resting on Stuart Skinner.
A Stuart Skinner that has a GAA 2.83 and save % of a terrible .894 in net career playoffs wise. Yuck.
After the playoffs they'll be looking for a #1 goalie.

And move out KaneYou bridge Bouchard and get rid of some other guys. It's do able.
Meh, I don't think Buchnevich or even Rantanen for this season would save us in the playoffs from a weak deflating stinker as a result of Skinner's goaltending. All the hopes and dreams really depends on Skinner. If he plays hot, then we're good. If he plays cold, we're f***ed. There's no consistency with this guy which is the most frustrating part. It's like playing Russian Roulette with Skinner holding the gun to your head.
He is the definition of Jekyll and Hyde.
Honestly I just don't think we should be going after middle class players unless they're willing to take a huge discount like RNH. Vegas is a recent Cup Winner that has a similar salary structure where they back up the brinks truck for a small handful of impact players and then get a bunch of ELC/reclamation project guys/vets willing to play for <2 mil. The reality is that by having McDavid and Draisaitl we're pretty much always going to be top heavy and the Nurse contract makes things even harder. The Oilers have also done a decent job dumpster diving over the past few years. Just have run into trouble with the middle class of players making $3-5M.

If we did get him, I think I play Marner with Drai. Sure, McMarner connected for the 4N winner, but before that they didn't look like a good fit too often. I think him and Drai are a near perfect match. And I run Nuge at 3C. Go out and see if Taylor Hall will come home for a cup run for a million bucks.
Hall-McDavid-Hyman
Podz-Drai-Marner
Kostin-Nuge-Savoie
Jones-Philp,Brown?
Yeah that conclusion seems forgone for this offseason. And move out Kane
After they paid to rebuild him?Yeah that conclusion seems forgone for this offseason.
Someone can reap those benefits, it's just how it goes. After they paid to rebuild him?
Instead of keeping him and reaping those benefits for their own?Someone can reap those benefits, it's just how it goes.
