Rakell would have been a great fit. Unfortunately, Dubas refuses to trade with the Oilers because of the Hyman signing. Rantanen to the Oilers would have broken the site.
The night before the deadline, I had a dream Dallas trade had been nixed because Rantanen to come here.

Brother it almost f***ing came true!

Really hope we made a run at Carlo. We do need a defensive defenseman first, one that can at least headman the puck out of the zone (Emberson still a work on progress on this). Most of Adam's best years are behind him now?? Not sure he would return here anyways.
There is a guy on the Islanders that should deserve some serious consideration. Wonder how Stan's relationship is with Lou as Lou takes numbers.

Generally defensive defenseman and headmanning the puck out of the zone dont go well together. Defensive dman tend to be good on the PK but can’t transition 5 on 5.

A guy like Brandon Carlo is a huge need for Edmonton
I miss Adam Larsson who would be a real good fit. Bowman's prioritized puck movement d with good processors to move pucks quickly, efficiently out of zone (Klingberg, Walman). Both d-men type are important especially when the ice shrinks in heavy, compete playoff hockey.

Oil team defending as a whole needs to get back to their structured, disciplined system play.

The Brandon Carlo of 3 years ago*

I wouldn’t of minded Carlo honestly. But lets see how Walman does. The stats at least show Walman going up while Carlo is going down.
For sure the one with elite goaltending tandem behind him versus the -32 goal share one with the #1 goaltender in big money hangover. Every day.

Walman's a good pick up and threadbare Oil asset club wasn't going to be in a position to hoover up two d-men.

Sorry, not towards you, but why the heck are people so cautious with Walman. He's a friggin top 4 Dman who is good offensively and defensively! What more do fans want on their D core?? Carlo is not better than Walman.

Only reason I wanted Carlo was because I thought he was the best available. Walman became available 2 hours before the trade. Apparently we tried for him for a while and Grier wouldn't budge. Look at our D core now.

Ekholm Bouchard
Nurse Walman
Kulak Emberson
Stecher

At their prime, which one of our D cores has been better?

Have a good cry and get over it. You realize signing Rantenan would likely mean not resigning Bouchard? Even if you dont resign Kapenan, or skinner or one of brown or perry and Klinger. So one of the big 5 would have to go for sure.
You realize the cap is going up next year and the year half and the year f***ing after right?

We had him. WE f***ING HAD HIM. Why couldn't they have just taken Savoie AND O'Reilly?

The challenge for us is we didn’t have picks to trade. Prospects are nice but teams are only interested in certain players while picks can be anyone in the draft. O’Reilly has played well of late (especially given how stacked London is) but him and Savoie are not can’t-miss blue chip guys.

That’s not even considering the fact that Carolina got two first rounders, Stankoven, and two thirds. Savoie and O’Reilly could maybe match up to the first rounders (although you could definitely argue the picks are worth more) but we had nothing on the level of Stankoven.

I’m glad we didn’t make this trade as we’d have zero assets left to improve the roster in the future. Pastrnak in the off-season would definitely be interesting though if we can find a way to make the numbers work but it would likely gut our assets as well.

I think most people wanted a dman who plays mostly on the right side. I wouldn’t get too worked up about it. Good RD are few and far between and obviously they weren’t comfortable with the RD market. Time will tell if it works out for us.

Thought you were giving everyone shit yesterday for whining?
Yeah. For people who wanted a goalie. Read my posts for crying out loud. I wanted a winger just as the rest and I was upset. But I wasn't crying over a goalie. I'm pissed and I'll just as the rest of us about not getting Leon a winger. A goalie was impossible to get with Gibson out. Not a winger.

I wonder about Rakell. We definitely tried for him. I'm shocked Dubas didn't trade him

I'm not sure that would've been such a good thing. That said if this is true we may well go big game hunting in the offseason.
It would have absolutely been the right play imo. The free agent pool has been thinning significantly as quality options re-sign with their teams. Next year looks like Marner (who Leafs can outspend anyone if they choose); and Florida Man Sam Bennett and Ekblad. https://www.spotrac.com/nhl/free-agents/_/year/2025/sort/contract_value

The Oilers continue to dip into their savings account with draft picks and a very poor prospect pool. They will likely have to spend their way into creating a sustaining window with a high growth cap going up over $20+ million over the next three-four years. Rantanen is an elite prime years guy who would have moved the needle immediately and quite likely has a favourable aging curve.

If teams smartly continue to lock up their top talent with cap requirements needing all teams to spend, it might be a wee bit more challenging for the Oil to poach via the inefficient, expensive free agent route. And they've already been challenged this trade deadline from accessing high end guys like Rantanen and others because they have way more limited pedigree assets to throw into these competitive bidding processes.

I'd sooner add a guy like Bennett for 1/2 the price and improve our goaltending.

Fair point, this team still has holes but Bennett has to get to market first. Goaltending and other team needs will become clearer in this critical playoff run. The Summer of Jeff cut off alot of team future with replacement old, no trade and currently underperforming replacements.

If we somehow got Pastrnak that would be like having a cheat code for the next 4 years. The cost would absolutely gut our best prospects and future draft picks but man it would be a fun 4 years.

Again Carlo went for the equivalent of O’Reilly and a first and he has been bad and mostly a 3rd pair guy for almost 3 years now.

No 1st rounders for the next 2 seasons so we need to really hope that Savoie and O'Reilly pan out. On D Akey is the only guy of note. Clattenburg could become a Trent Frederic type. Beryozkin is a guy that we absolutely need to keep on top of and try to bring over.

hahahah so you can decide what people whine about on here? Grow up, Karm.

If we matched on Holloway we probably have Rantanen today

And im saying if Bowman took a serious run at Rantenan or spent serious time on it he was a damn fool!
The time to retool this team or remake this team in the offseason. To kill that option for our New GM is suicide.
We already know he’s a fool for standing pat in the crease when that is a glaring weakness and they’re supposed to be competing for a cup.

It’s all out of our control so let’s see how this plays out.
