I miss Adam Larsson who would be a real good fit. Bowman's prioritized puck movement d with good processors to move pucks quickly, efficiently out of zone (Klingberg, Walman). Both d-men type are important especially when the ice shrinks in heavy, compete playoff hockey.

Oil team defending as a whole needs to get back to their structured, disciplined system play.
What's the Oilers defensive depth right now?
Ekholm
Nurse
Bouchard
Wahlman
Kulak
Klingberg
Emberton

That's decent. Nobody stands out in particular, but better than last year.

aaaaaahhhhh....your a Charmin salesman.
Don't let Ekholm find you!.

The reports that we were willing to give up assets comparable to what DAL gave up AND lock Rantanen to 13M+ shows the mentality of this organization. Are they seriously adding that much money on wing? Do they not see the holes on D ?

With all the NMCs handed out we would've been a lot of trouble if he accepted and one of Bouchard or Ekholm would've likely been a Cane.

I wonder about Walman for that too. Maybe he's just the best Dman available, and so it's bad that he's LD but we can make due.

But maybe it's also future focused, as a possible Ekholm replacement in a couple years. If Walman does well with Bouchard, maybe Ekholm goes on the right side with Nurse (probably not this year) He played both sides in Nashville
I think someone posted saying Walman wasn’t available but Bowman had been hounding Grier for him from the moment the Oilers gave him a company cell phone, so Grier finally said you can have him if you stop calling me.

I wonder if we took a run at Marchand who basically went for a 2nd to a big time rival. Obviously Bowman and Sweeney were talking earlier.
Or maybe March didn't want to come west.

That’s a good D core if everyone plays to their abilities

There is also good depth with quite a few NHL/AHL tweener guys in Bakersfield too

At least if Stu shits the bed and we lose in the first round the mgmt has to address our goalie right? Right? Guys? Right??????

What do you mean shit the bed? When has Stu ever shit the bed? Haven't you read all the posts on here where no goal is ever his fault and we had the worst defense in the NHL all season? Statistics are all lies. Don't believe your eyes either.

After arguing with Stu Simps for so long I think I know what it's like to debate flat earthers.

We are a Skinner injury away from a first round exit.

What difference would Pickard being in net over Skinner actually make? They're pretty much equal. Pickard actually outplayed Stu in the small sample size we saw last postseason...

Gibson was available. Now maybe the price wasn't right but let's not pretend there wasn't an opportunity to upgrade. The fact this management thinks Gibson isn't an upgrade over Skinner is mind boggling scary

To me the way they always deflect on goaltending is them trying to protect Schwartz. Because imo if they start to blame and admit goaltending is an issue it starts to bring Schwartz to the for front and we can't have that obviously

So many goalies were available, even ones that might seem like marginal upgrades would probably be substantial upgrades on this team. You can't seriously tell me James Reimer as third-string insurance (though even he'd likely steal the net) couldn't be had for peanuts. I actually heard Jamie McLennan suggest exactly that.

What many of you need to realize is that just because a player wasn't traded doesn't mean they weren't available, and just because they weren't in the gossip columns also doesn't mean they weren't available. Did anyone even mention Spencer Knight as a possible trade target?

So much of this fanbase is blind to what good goaltending looks like, which is weird considering how often this team gets goalied...

McDavid at 16M (assuming discount), Leon at 14M, Rantanen at 13M, Bouchard at 9.5M (?), Nurse at 9.25M...some money is coming off the books, but this would be a ridiculously top heavy roster with cheap goaltending (sometimes, you get what you pay for). About 62M for 5 players. It would have been very doable this year and next, but could have become messy.
Bouchard would almost definitely had to have been in the deal to make the longterm money work.

I don't think we have a comparable package to what Dallas ended up getting him for.

Bowman said it in his presser that they were asking about Walman early in the season when he was on a heater before Xmas.

Walman had a lower body injury around Xmas and hasn't been the same offensively.

Hopefully we have scouted him recently and did not throw away a 1st

Skinner has the most goals of the available wingers and has been a positive on-ice 200-foot contributor for the past 20 games or so. Of course this means he never gets to play? Did he insult Knobs wife or something? Like, what is going on here?

I'd rather keep Jeff Skinner than Knob at this point.

Now that Skinner isn't going anywhere I hope they try him on the first power play along with Corey Perry at least once. I think they've both earned a look.

He had like 23 points in 28 games. Unless he was Quinn Hughes, you expect him to keep up that pace?

Blackwood also got traded and then Ceci did too. He didn't really have very good partners

Numbers aren't everything. Carlo is certainly not a 3rd pairing Dman no matter what the charts say.
The charts make Bouchard look like a great defensive Dman but it's just not the case.
It's doesn't matter anymore but Carlo would've been a good add on Oil.
No they don't. JFresh chart has Bouchard as an average defensive D and Elite offensive D.

Depends what year you look at.

This is from last January:

As you can see there, his 23-24 defense is right up there with his offense.

Yes because when you're as dominant of a puck possession player as he and Ekholm that year (and for that matter the 5 players that always played together) you tend to get numbers like that. There's not much of a negative impact a player can have defensively when his team has the puck 70% of the time. It's also a fair argument that dominant puck possession play is actual good defence because technically it is.

You'll have a hard time arguing a player with his underlying metrics and +32 wasn't elite last year at both ends of the ice.

To add to this point. Carlo is likely dragged down in his defensive numbers because he is an atrocious puck mover. It's the same argument for Cody Ceci. Is Ceci a bad defensive zone defender? No. Is he a bad defensive D? Yes, because he gets constantly hemmed in his own zone because his puck retrievals and puck moving are just dreadful.

Whats most concerning for Carlo is that his numbers look like this despite playing 3rd pairing 5v5 minutes, and only facing mid-tier competition. His only saving grace is his quality of teammate wasn't great and maybe that boost in Toronto will make his serviceable in a middle pairing role, but that is still quite a gamble.
