Not sure if Nurse was better. Jones had far worse teammate quality and was actually playing top pair minutes still and not doing that badly on a bad Chicago team. He never dragged down teammates like Nurse has pretty consistently through his career.

Jones absolutely stepped it up when he finally got a chance to win on a good team. Nurse has had a chance to step up for years, and has usually ended up a handicap and huge distraction for our coach to figure out how to shelter.

Sure, Jones also quit on this team, which Nurse did not.

And Nurse never showed the high end ability and talent that Jones had. Jones/Werenski were talked about on here as the best pairing in hockey for a minute. Nurse wasnt ever at his level, imo.

Tuch is the first player I really wanted that we missed out on, but he signed for his full market value and I would of been asking him to take atleast a small haircut to play on a championship level team.

With both Tuch and Kyrou picked up I'm wondering if WSH is changing their philosophy and going full moneypuck like CAR.

The Oilers sometimes make trades for players who aren't even mentioned much in rumours at all or even connected to the Oilers.. like the Ekholm and Walman trades. Before those trades, there was very little to no mention at all connecting Edmonton to those players. So I wonder if we see something similar here... and wind up with someone we're surprised with.

Well that sucks. McMann and Tuch off the board. Not really interested in anyone else via free agency.
I see a handful of players to be interested in, though its a shallow pool, so I'm not sure if we can expect any Roslovic kind of value contracts again.

Mentally prepared for our management and Katz to think that Babcock is a cure-all for this team, and his magic coaching powers will make something close to status quo infinitely better next season.

I’ve been saying all offseason that I don’t really see much of a chance to upgrade this roster.

Hope Babcock can turn things around is the most likely solution.

Bowman has sort of painted himself into a corner. He doesn’t have much for assets to do much. Free agency is weak and generally not a good way to build a team regardless of.

The only real solution is to find a diamond in the rough or turn around a disgruntled player. I’m not convinced this team really uses analytics much regardless of what they say. Our scouting is historically bad.

Maybe Savoie and Howard take a massive step.

I try not to be overly negative but I don’t see much light at the end of the tunnel personally.

Great article.

- Asked what it will be like if, for the first time in his NHL career, a coach sits him down for a shift or two when he’s having a bad night, McDavid ended his quote with: “It's time to have that happen in Edmonton.”

- “I know (Babcock) alluded to the fact that it's easy to say in June — and it is easy to say in June. It might be a little bit different when it's November. But we've all agreed that this is what we want. This is what we're looking for,” McDavid said. “I don't plan on having that happen to me very much. But when it does, it'll be deserved, and we'll move forward, and we'll learn from it.

- “It's time to have that happen in Edmonton. It’s time.”

- “I’m excited about that challenge to be pushed by a coach,” he concluded, “because it's been a really long time in Edmonton.”
- Don’t worry, we asked McDavid about Babcock’s reputation. We’ll get to that.

- By far the more compelling quotes came when asked about Edmonton’s franchise path, which has taken McDavid and the Oilers to the brink of possibly his final contract, a two-year deal that kicks in this season.

- “The definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result,” McDavid said. “Babs is different. He gives us a different personality, a different approach to our group, and an approach that we’ve probably have never had

- “We've tried it the same way for a really long time. Let's try it different.”
“Different,” in this scenario, means less ice time for McDavid and Draisaitl, and — as we’ve been calling for since about 2019 — more responsibility for everyone else.

Truth is we're just completely out of the market to add any name players both in cap space and assets.

Still annoyed at the Ekholm and Walberg extensions last season. Could have been a player but then again Bowman ain't going to be on the winning end of those deals.

Yes he would take the enormous weight of Nurse's contract right off the Oilers backs.

Slightly cheaper? They'd clear over $4m in cap space this offseason then $9.25m per year the next 3 years lol. They'd basically get out of the contract scot free and even add a decent Dman for one year.
That's fine if that's the goal. I'd argue the savings next season is pretty slim though. There's no way they can go into season with Stastney as the #3LD, can they? Aren't you going to spend $2-3M on something decent for that spot(especially for in case Walman gets injured)? Nurse+6D+7D is about $11.5M. Risto+new 6D+7D is like $8-9M?

$2-3M ain't bad, but seems like pennies when you're likely making the roster worse and pushing a good young player out of the lineup(Emberson) and losing another(Stastney).

Long term it's great, but making the roster worse next year is a mistake. People seem to be sure Nurse is going to return a decent player. Surely there's something other than Risto out there.

We kinda got hosed on the McMann situation. The PK was so bad that Bowman blew a 1st on Dickinson ... if we could have acquired McMann and signed him to a reasonable 6 mill-ish, that probably would have been better for us. I thought he'd demand more and wait for UFA day.

If this is true and Stan really is this useless....then i hope McDavid submits him a list of 7 or 8 teams by the end of July.
