Rumor: Rumors & Proposals Thread | If Babcock is Our New Coach Will Players Want to Come Here?

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
The Oilers should hold their cap space provided they get some from Nurse to try and take a real big swing eventually (like say if Boston regresses, maybe Pastranak wants out at the deadline).

If you keep spending on the Mikeyehev's and Frederics of the world you are always going to be capped out and locked out of getting anyone really good.
We say this every year but we barely do shit.

We realistically do not have the pieces to trade for Pasta even if he was offered up, that’s just not us. The best we can do is try and saw off matchups when McDrai are not on the ice, and you get there by adding shot suppressors like Mikheyev. It’s a nice bonus he also happens to be a solid rush chance creator, which Dickinson as a bit of a black hole himself needs on his line.

I would love the depth one day to run something like RNH-Dickinson-Hyman, no question, but until a Howard or someone takes a big leap in development we are probably looking at 20 minutes from the McDavid line, 20 from Drai’s line, 12-13 from an effective shutdown unit, and 5-7 from the fourth line. It’s a recipe other teams have used and if you can make sure those “bottom 20” minute guys are keeping chances against down, you will win more than lose.

He'd better not be our big move...

I want Mikheyev and like the player quite a bit, but its seems like him and Nuge both ideally slot on the 3rd line LW spot and while I'm sure you could slide Mikheyev to the RW that just feels like a lot of money to spend on a 3rd line. While one could argue we'd be spending roughly as much money on the 3rd line with Frederic taking that spot instead, but he's a mistake we are stuck with so its more of a trying to make lemonade out of lemons situation.

That's fine if that's the goal. I'd argue the savings next season is pretty slim though. There's no way they can go into season with Stastney as the #3LD, can they? Aren't you going to spend $2-3M on something decent for that spot(especially for in case Walman gets injured)? Nurse+6D+7D is about $11.5M. Risto+new 6D+7D is like $8-9M?

$2-3M ain't bad, but seems like pennies when you're likely making the roster worse and pushing a good young player out of the lineup(Emberson) and losing another(Stastney).

Long term it's great, but making the roster worse next year is a mistake. People seem to be sure Nurse is going to return a decent player. Surely there's something other than Risto out there.

Yes I'd much much rather have Risto+4m.cap savings next season with a need at 3LD and $9.25m cap savings for the next 3 years than Nurse and his contract and 4m more on the cap this season. Very much so

I do not believe these people who think Nurse at full contract will return something decent, not for one second, so if they can get a cheaper expiring contract for him I'd be very happy.

Honestly, if I had a choice in signing Mikheyev long term or Frederic, I would've picked Mikheyev

So just make the roster worse instead of seeing if we can possibly plug a different hole with this deal?

June 24th is the new “trade deadline” day apparently, so to speak. Deadline day has basically been dead the last several years compared to all the movement these last couple of days.

Yes, that's if you consider the downgrade from Nurse to Risto to be significant which I don't think it is. Plus they'd have $4m+ extra to play with to make roster improvements

Also, I have to repeat that I don't believe that Nurse has positive value without retention so getting a much cheaper expiring contract and getting free of the $9.25m caphit for the three seasons thereafter is a huge selling point for me and about as good as the Oilers can do with a Nurse return IMO.

But just because you don’t believe doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to downgrade on Nurse in a position we don’t need to because you are desperate for an expiring deal.

It's the desperation to get out of the contract. How are you not understanding that?

If you think that swapping Nurse for Risto for a few months (they could flip him during the season) is the thing that will sewer the Oilers season then you're either really overrating Nurse or maybe underrating Risto then we'll just agree to disagree that it's that huge of a downgrade.

Mikheyev is a fine target. PK would certianly benefit.

But again I'll say the thing to make our roster better is add top 6 help and force our current depth chart wingers flanking 97/29 down to the bottom 6.

Little tired of banking on the Mangiapanes/J. Skinners/Roslovics/Arvidssons to recreate 30G-35G in the aggregate. Goes back to overworking the core - they have to be that much better and take on that much more to ensure the "lesser" players get there, whereas names like Tuch/McMann/Kyrou (yes moot to discuss now) have the skill and finish to take care of 30G on their own and actually turn into 35-40G scorers playing with our centers. Granted, Knoblauch really misused Arvidsson, and Roslovic did ok - but we should be aiming higher. Hopefully the message is still "Cup or Bust" with Bowman.

Remember when we were able to attract a good free agent forward (Hyman)? Pepperidge Farms remembers

I mean... tampering always happens. We definitely tampered with Hyman

Happens all the time. That's why you have free agents signed within mins of being available

True enough gents, but considering how the league treats the Oilers (Kane LTIR for example) they don’t need to give them any more reason to be put under the microscope.

With Hyman, did the Leafs not allow him to talk to other teams though? Maybe I’m not remembering correctly.
