If we don't win a cup, this is the reason. League-worst drafting after picking McD. Started with Reinhart and just snowballed. Bouch was a good pick, though, striking out on every fwd pick since is just insane.
I think it goes beyond that. Our development is equally awful. In an alternate timeline, I can absolutely see guys like Holloway and broberg excelling elsewhere already. I can also see Stankoven getting the Holloway treatment here.

It's not one or the other, it's both.

Any smoke anywhere involving the Oil or is it dying off? I'm thinking if they do anything else, it'll be tomorrow with double retention and a roster player.

It still boggles my mind that almost all their draft success has come from the OHL and it's like they actively try to avoid the league most of them time.

Puljujarvi -> Tkachuk
Broberg -> Harley
Holloway -> Foerster
Bourgault -> Johnston

If Avs or Vegas adds another big piece, you gotta think Holland will try and match that too?

I don't know. I look at Desharnais and I look at Broberg.

One was so happy to get a NHL contract that he spent the time to work his butt off. Before Broberg was sent down there was all this talk about how Vinny stays late after practice to work with the coaches.

Where was Broberg? Not there. You'd think if you see someone who is also deemed a prospect even though older working late with coaches that you'd do the same.

At some point it's not always the organizations fault. Seems these higher picks just expect to be given time no matter what, but that doesn't happen on contenders. You need to either show up when given a chance or spend the time it takes to get better.

This for sure, but also deployment. None of Broberg, Holloway or Lavoie have been given real opportunities by this team. Stankoven was recalled from the AHL and promptly put in the top 6, and he's got 5 goals and 9 points in 8 games. Lavoie got what, 6 minutes of the 4th line with Ryan and Brown? Holloway gets a shift with Mcdrai here and there but is otherwise stapled to the 4th line. We don't draft well, and when we find guys, we don't give them an actual shot.

He may not be of stable mind, and one could argue against a lot of what he's done, but at least he's consistently acquired guys at the deadline to help the team, whether they've all worked or not.

Could have been worse, they could have stepped back to the Tambelli do nothing phase.

Broberg lost his spot, granted they kept Kulak so he had to play his offside. But the plan was definitely for him to be where Desharnais is right now, and frankly I think it has been for 2-3 seasons now.

I wonder if they are looking to move Ceci and Foegele out in Eberle and Carrier acquisitions to open up more cap space for next year to cover off some of the Brown overage.

If there was some way to get Foegele and Ceci out and both in at 25% we would kill two birds with one stone. Accomplishing that is likely in the pipe dream category though.
I do not see Foegele going anywhere. It won't happen. Ceci i hope though!!!

Part of it. But even before that some teams had advantages others didn’t. The cap was supposed to even the flaying field and for the first 2-3 years it did. Now with this loophole BS and NTC/NMC Bs it’s right back where it was before the cap was brought in. I often wonder if an NFL style franchise tag system would level the field again?

Let’s say for example each team has 3 tags they can place on players at any position. These players only count as 50% of the cap hit but only these players are allowed NMC”s. This would eliminate or should eliminate the premmadonnas that only want to play in the sun and collect a big paycheck. Just a thought I’m sure the PA would never agree though
The cap wasn’t brought in to have parity, it was brought in to limit owners spending so they made more money
