Rumor: Rumors & Proposals Thread: “I’d buy that for a dollar!!!” Edition

I firmly believe that there are GMs that everyone knows they can take advantage of, and other GMs. Ken Holland is in the former category. We generally pay higher for trades than other GMs. Remember when Kenny said about Keith "do you want me to get him for free?" when we got him with no retention, Keith requested a trade specifically to Edmonton and we had all the leverage? The Oilers can't get away with anything because Holland isn't astute, and everyone around the league knows that.
If it was just KH that this occurred with I would agree with you. But if you look back at the oilers history of trades and signings you see a pattern. Aside from Slats and one good year by Lowe the oilers have always had this exact same issue. Players still don’t want to come to Edmonton if they don’t have to. Even McDrai haven’t helped with that very much. Cold climate mixed with historically inept coaching and management have made it even harder but the problem was always there.
Wrong, those cup wins should have a smiling Bettman face with a thumbs up beside them.
That too

I'm a little bitter about this Vegas stuff because Kelly Mcrimmon (Vegas GM) and Bill Zito (Florida GM) were allegedly the front runners for the Oilers GM job in 2019, until Holland became available, and Nicholson hired him without an interview.
there is no super management team or drafting wizards, the results would have been the same

The only reasons this team has become somewhat desirable is McDrai and (more importantly IMO), winning. Most teams have the same issues, only the top third-ish can get away with sucking and still get good players, and it's all about location in that sense.

Edmonton should be more like Vegas.

I always think the same thing about all these small and medium e-commerce companies I see. Like if you just operated like Amazon and shipped everything next day for free then maybe you’d be a bit more successful and wouldn’t get put out of business by Amazon. Why would I ever buy anything from one of these companies when I can just get it from Amazon for cheaper with free shipping and it shows up on my doorstep the next day.

Just be more like Amazon.

No argument there but Ekholm-Bouchard and Kulak-Desharnais somehow performed well in that same system in the Vegas series.

They didn’t bugger it up as much but Eichel’s line schooled Leon’s line no matter who the D pairings were. Either way I don’t disagree Nurse Ceci are not a good mix but have high hopes for the new pairings.

Shelf Nurse for colon laceration and Draisaitl on LTIR for skin disease.
Add Guentzel and Provorov!

Part of it. But even before that some teams had advantages others didn’t. The cap was supposed to even the flaying field and for the first 2-3 years it did. Now with this loophole BS and NTC/NMC Bs it’s right back where it was before the cap was brought in. I often wonder if an NFL style franchise tag system would level the field again?

Let’s say for example each team has 3 tags they can place on players at any position. These players only count as 50% of the cap hit but only these players are allowed NMC”s. This would eliminate or should eliminate the premmadonnas that only want to play in the sun and collect a big paycheck. Just a thought I’m sure the PA would never agree though

Colorado traded players to get players. After #1 (McDavid), the Oilers have 3 centres who are better than Middelstadt including the one they just acquired. If anything we are out "arms racing" the Avalanche, we got the better player. Walker is not a needle mover.

You are probably alone in your opinion on Tanev. He's a good one way d man that has taken a bit of a step back this year. I think you would struggle to find a single other person that would describe him as the best available player at the deadline.

I think Vegas's defense is already solid and already efficient through three pairs. I don't think the impact there will be material, and I think Hanifin is massively overrated. This could be a blessing in disguise, because McDavid absolutely abused him in the playoffs just two years ago. Hopefully he brings the same level of impact. Don't think that Hanifin makes a big difference to a team that has been playing at a 25th place level since November.

I respect your opinion, your obviously a knowledgeable poster, but I still disagree.

Thats fine they had to trade players out. Byram is good but not great and Johansen is ass. I am more then fine trading out players here in Edmonton for upgrades. Even if there is a difference in opinion in how much better the player improves the team, I personally really like that they are going to get the guys they have identified and are taking risks. IMO what went out and what came in, Colorado got better.

For Dallas, maybe not the best but certainly some of the top avaialble players. Which dman who is available currently is better? He was also the #1 Oiler target so clearly there is a lot of value subscribed there. The only dman I can really see being ranked higher ironically is hanfinin lol.

As for Vegas, I truly think defence is a sum of the parts. That defence as a hole does not have a weak point. Him playing in a number 4 role vs number 1 role is vastly different. I dont think hes a world beater but they are loading up an already stacked defensive core.

You make some very good points though and it did make me feel a bit better about our TDL to hear your perspective. I still would like the Oilers to add and IMO "keep up" with the above teams.

Drai and Nurse on LTIR and that's all we adding? We can also add Buch, Parayko and Crosby!!!

Wyatt Johnston and Stankoven both picked after Bourgault, Roope Hintz and Jason Robertson in round 2, Thomas Harley was picked after Broberg and is already a top pairing Dman in the NHL...just incredible drafting by that team.
One wonders what our scouts even watch lol
