And that leaves 14+ mill for Bear, 4 bottom 6 guys and a backup goalie. So even if that used 9 of that, it gives us 4+ whatever the cap goes up by to add another top 6 forward

Well rumors that I've read on here (no idea if they are legit or not though) is that the cap is going to go up around $4-5 million. That would be great news for us if so.

Outside of Lagesson and maybe Benson, sadly none of the Condors seem to be pushing for a spot.

Although I could see them moving Russell, replacing him with Lagesson or Jones. Would free up around 3 mill in space. Still wouldn't have a #1 defender but I don't think they are looking for one.

Yeah we have basically nobody on the farm that is pushing for a forward spot at all. Gotta figure we'll end up trading a d prospect in the offseason for some forward prospects. Lagesson or Jones are likely gonzo you would think. Might be Larsson or Russell going as well, now that I think about it. At any point, it will be a D for F type trade. Likely doesn't make us a lot better up front, but I'm sure it will help some at least. It sure would have been nice for one of Benson or Yamamoto to have some offensive prowess, but that just isn't the case unfortunately.

We DESPERATELY need at least 2 farm guys to push people out. Even Dube and that Mangy kid on CGY don't look out of place. Hold their own.

They've got $19M tied up in their top three LWers already though, and only two defensemen signed for next season. They're actually a little worse off than the Oilers for cap space.
But he's a former Oiler, of course Calgary would go after him. They probably also just move Tkachuk or Gaudreau to right wing

Calgary is home for Hall, he grew up a flames fan and loved being a top dog in a Canadian market. I've been expecting him to end up there in 2020 for a couple years now (I had a dream about it a long time ago).

Edmonton
Nurse at 6-6.5 x 5-6 years
Kassian at 2.5-2.75 x 3 years

Signing Bear, a back up goalie and filling roster with bottom 6 players + ELC players should still leave us enough cap space to work with and add a top 6 winger. Add in the fact that we can look into moving someone like Russell or Chiasson, it’ll open up more room.

I don’t see how we are in a bad spot for the next couple years. If anything, it keeps improving as the cap goes up. Similar to the Pens, the Malkin and Crosby contracts got better and better as years passed and they improved.

On a side note, this is why I hated the fact that we gave Chiasson the extra year.

I'd actually go for more term for Kassian, 5-6 years in order to keep the cap hit low. I think for 3 years he's looking at $3M+, for 5-6 years he could sign for less. Sign him for 6 years @ $2.33M cap hit structured in this way (or similar): $3.11M - $3.11M - $3.11M - $1.56M - $1.56M - $1.56M.

Maybe I am over-valuing Kassian though, but I think he has been really good in the role he is playing on the top line but at the same time also fully capable of taking a role in the bottom 6 and do well there (better then our other bottom 6 fwds).

I appreciate Kassian and I certainly don't think complimenting McDavid and Drai is as easy as the media likes to portray it, but you don't sign players of his ilk for that long. While your cap number makes a 6 year deal about as enticing as it can reasonably get, it just doesn't seem right. In his entire career he's only flirted with breaking the 30 point barrier when riding shotgun to the Sedins or McDrai. I highly doubt he has the skill and staying power to not get ousted from that McDrai role at some point in the next 5-6 years, I'd say if he can even hold it down for 2 full years past the current season we are probably doing something terribly wrong as an organization. Then the question arises is what role does he play when not paired with McDrai, career wise he's tended to be a 3rd/4th line tweener, so optimistically he can maintain the 3rd/4th line tweener role away from McDrai, but realistically he'll get pushed down into a 4th line role and pessimistically he won't be an NHL caliber player by the time a 6 year deal ends.

I'd be tabling 2 and 3 year deals, if Kass wants 4 years I want a very team friendly deal. 5-6 years I'd consider to be out of the question.

The number that has been floated is $84.5M or so. Typically these mid season updates are fairly accurate.

The big jump could come from a new US TV deal. That happens in 2021-2022. We could easily see a $90M+ cap by then if the speculation is correct. The Oilers cap structure is actually quite favourable going forward.
